Fundamental Attribution Error

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    (male narrator)
Today we're going to talk about
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    the fundamental attribution error.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    What exactly is
    the fundamental attribution error?
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    And why is so important?
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    Let's look at an example:
  • 0:10 - 0:12
Say your friend Bob takes you to a party.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
And at that party he introduces you
    to his other friend, Erik.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    Erik is particularly curt,
and seems uninterested in meeting you.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    He comes off as unfriendly.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
Chances are, your first reaction is to assume
Erik is just an unfriendly person.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
A real jerk, if you will, right?
  • 0:27 - 0:29
What if Erik is just having
    a really tough day.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
Maybe he broke up with his girlfriend.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
Or maybe someone close to him
    has passed away.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
Then you may think that Erik's behavior
    is excusable because well,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
he's just having a bad day.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
I guess Erik isn't that bad a guy, huh?
  • 0:42 - 0:43
Well this mix up in judgement
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    is a perfect example
    of the fundamental attribution error.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    In other words,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
people tend to place more emphasis
    on internal explanations
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    rather than considering
    the circumstances.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    So next time
you meet someone at a party,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
don't be so quick to judge them.
