    CA: Okay. But this doesn't
    really look like a Martine.

    MR: Right. That was myself as a male,
    the way I was brought up.

    Before I transitioned from male
    to female and Martin to Martine.

    CA: You were brought up Martin Rothblatt.

    MR: Correct.

    CA: And about a year after this picture,
    you married a beautiful woman.

    Was this love at first sight?
    What happened there?

    MR: It was love at the first sight.

    I saw Bina at a discotheque
    in Los Angeles,

    and we later began living together,

    but the moment I saw her,
    I saw just an aura of energy around her.

    I asked her to dance.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    She said she saw an aura
    of energy around me.

    I was a single male parent.
    She was a single female parent.

    We showed each other
    our kids' pictures,

    and we've been happily married
    for a third of a century now.

    CA: And at the time, you were
    kind of this hotshot entrepreneur,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    working with satellites.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    I think you had two successful companies,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    and then you started
    addressing this problem
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    of how could you use satellites
    to revolutionize radio.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    Tell us about that.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    MR: Right. I always
    loved space technology,
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    and satellites, to me, are sort of
    like the canoes that our ancestors
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    first pushed out into the water.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    So it was exciting for me
    to be part of the navigation
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    of the oceans of the sky,
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    and as I developed different types
    of satellite communication systems,
  • 2:00 - 2:06
    the main thing I did was to launch
    bigger and more powerful satellites,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    the consequence of which
    was that the receiving antennas
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    could be smaller and smaller,
  • 2:11 - 2:15
    and after going through
    direct television broadcasting,
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    I had the idea that if we could make
    a more powerful satellite,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    the receiving dish could be so small
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    that it would just be a section
    of a parabolic dish,
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    a flat little plate embedded
    into the roof of an automobile,
  • 2:28 - 2:32
    and it would be possible to have
    nationwide satellite radio,
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    and that's Sirius XM today.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    CA: Wow. So who here has used Sirius?
  • 2:37 - 2:40

    MR: Thank you for
    your monthly subscriptions.

    CA: So that succeeded despite
    all predictions at the time.

    It was a huge commercial success,
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    but soon after this, in the early 1990s,

    there was this big transition in your life
    and you became Martine.

    MR: Correct.
    CA: So tell me, how did that happen?

    MR: It happened in consultation with Bina
    and our four beautiful children,
  • 3:12 - 3:17
    and I discussed with each of them
  • 3:17 - 3:23
    that I felt my soul was always female,
    and as a woman,
  • 3:23 - 3:27
    but I was afraid people would
    laugh at me if I expressed it,
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    so I always kept it bottled up
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    and just showed my male side.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    And each of them
    had a different take on this.
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    Bina said, "I love your soul,
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    and whether the outside
    is Martin and Martine,
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    it doesn't it matter to me,
    I love your soul."
  • 3:46 - 3:54
    My son said, "If you become a woman,
    will you still be my father?"
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    And I said, "Yes,
    I'll always be your father,"
  • 3:57 - 4:01
    and I'm still his father today.
  • 4:01 - 4:05
    My youngest daughter did an absolutely
    brilliant five-year-old thing.
  • 4:05 - 4:10
    She told people, "I love my dad
    and she loves me."
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    So she had no problem
    with a gender blending whatsoever.

    CA: And a couple years after this,
    you published this book:

    "The Apartheid of Sex."
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    What was your thesis in this book?
  • 4:23 - 4:28
    MR: My thesis in this book is that there
    are seven billion people in the world,
  • 4:28 - 4:33
    and actually, seven billion unique ways
    to express one's gender.
  • 4:33 - 4:40
    And while people may have
    the genitals of a male or a female,
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    the genitals don't determine your gender
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    or even really your sexual identity.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    That's just a matter of anatomy
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    and reproductive tracts,
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    and people could choose
    whatever gender they want
  • 4:52 - 4:57
    if they weren't forced by society
    into categories of either male or female
  • 4:57 - 5:02
    the way South Africa used to force people
    into categories of black or white.
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    We know from anthropological science
    that race is fiction,
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    even though racism is very, very real,
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    and we now know from cultural studies
  • 5:11 - 5:15
    that separate male or female genders
    is a constructed fiction.
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    The reality is a gender fluidity
  • 5:18 - 5:22
    that crosses the entire continuum
    from male to female.
  • 5:22 - 5:26
    CA: You yourself don't always
    feel 100 percent female.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    MR: Correct. I would say in some ways
  • 5:28 - 5:32
    I change my gender about as often
    as I change my hairstyle.

    CA: (Laughs) Okay, now, this is
    your gorgeous daughter, Jenesis.
  • 5:39 - 5:44
    And I guess she was about this age
    when something pretty terrible happened.
  • 5:44 - 5:49
    MR: Yes, she was finding herself
    unable to walk up the stairs
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    in our house to her bedroom,
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    and after several months of doctors,
  • 5:53 - 5:57
    she was diagnosed to have a rare,
    almost invariably fatal disease
  • 5:57 - 6:01
    called pulmonary arterial hypertension.
  • 6:01 - 6:04
    CA: So how did you respond to that?
  • 6:04 - 6:07
    MR: Well, we first tried to get her
    to the best doctors we could.
  • 6:07 - 6:11
    We ended up at Children's National
    Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
  • 6:11 - 6:14
    The head of pediatric cardiology
  • 6:14 - 6:18
    told us that he was going to refer her
    to get a lung transplant,
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    but not to hold out any hope,
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    because there are
    very few lungs available,
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    especially for children.
  • 6:24 - 6:28
    He said that all people
    with this illness died,
  • 6:28 - 6:33
    and if any of you have seen
    the film "Lorenzo's Oil,"
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    there's a scene when the protagonist
  • 6:35 - 6:41
    kind of rolls down the stairway
    crying and bemoaning the fate of his son,
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    and that's exactly
    how we felt about Jenesis.
  • 6:44 - 6:48
    CA: But you didn't accept that
    as the limit of what you could do.
  • 6:48 - 6:53
    You started trying to research
    and see if you could find a cure somehow.
  • 6:53 - 6:57
    MR: Correct. She was in the intensive
    care ward for weeks at a time,
  • 6:57 - 7:01
    and Bina and I would tag team
    to stay at the hospital
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    while the other watched
    the rest of the kids,
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    and when I was in the hospital
    and she was sleeping,
  • 7:06 - 7:07
    I went to the hospital library.
  • 7:07 - 7:12
    I read every article that I could find
    on pulmonary hypertension.
  • 7:12 - 7:16
    I had not taken any biology,
    even in college,
  • 7:16 - 7:21
    so I had to go from a biology textbook
    to a college-level textbook
  • 7:21 - 7:26
    and then medical textbook
    and the journal articles, back and forth,
  • 7:26 - 7:30
    and eventually I knew enough to think
    that it might be possible
  • 7:30 - 7:31
    that somebody could find a cure.
  • 7:31 - 7:35
    So we started a nonprofit foundation.
  • 7:35 - 7:40
    I wrote a description
    asking people to submit grants
  • 7:40 - 7:42
    and we would pay for medical research.
  • 7:42 - 7:46
    I became an expert on the condition --
    doctors said to me, Martine,
  • 7:46 - 7:50
    we really appreciate all the funding
    you've provided us,
  • 7:50 - 7:54
    but we are not going to be able
    to find a cure in time
  • 7:54 - 7:55
    to save your daughter.
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    However, there is a medicine
  • 7:57 - 8:03
    that was developed at the
    Burroughs Wellcome Company
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    that could halt the progression
    of the disease,
  • 8:06 - 8:11
    but Burroughs Wellcome has just
    been acquired by Glaxo Wellcome.
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    They made a decision not to develop
  • 8:13 - 8:16
    any medicines for rare
    and orphan diseases,
  • 8:16 - 8:21
    and maybe you could use your expertise
    in satellite communications
  • 8:21 - 8:24
    to develop this cure
    for pulmonary hypertension.
  • 8:25 - 8:28
    CA: So how on earth did you get
    access to this drug?
  • 8:28 - 8:30
    MR: I went to Glaxo Wellcome
  • 8:30 - 8:36
    and after three times being rejected
    and having the door slammed in my face
  • 8:36 - 8:39
    because they weren't going
    to out-license the drug
  • 8:39 - 8:42
    to a satellite communications expert,
  • 8:42 - 8:49
    they weren't going to send the drug
    out to anybody at all,
  • 8:49 - 8:52
    and they thought
    I didn't have the expertise,
  • 8:52 - 8:58
    finally I was able to persuade
    a small team of people to work with me
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    and develop enough credibility.
  • 9:01 - 9:03
    I wore down their resistance,
  • 9:03 - 9:06
    and they had no hope this drug
    would even work, by the way,
  • 9:06 - 9:09
    and they tried to tell me,
    "You're just wasting your time.
  • 9:09 - 9:10
    We're sorry about your daughter."
  • 9:10 - 9:13
    But finally, for 25,000 dollars
  • 9:13 - 9:18
    and agreement to pay 10 percent
    of any revenues we might ever get,
  • 9:18 - 9:21
    they agreed to give me
    worldwide rights to this drug.
  • 9:22 - 9:29
    CA: And so you put this drug on the market
    in a really brilliant way,
  • 9:29 - 9:33
    by basically charging what it would take
    to make the economics work.
  • 9:33 - 9:37
    MR: Oh yes, Chris, but this really wasn't
    a drug that I ended up --
  • 9:37 - 9:40
    after I wrote the check for 25,000,
  • 9:40 - 9:43
    and I said, "Okay, where's
    the medicine for Jenesis?"
  • 9:43 - 9:46
    they said, "Oh, Martine,
    there's no medicine for Jenesis.
  • 9:46 - 9:48
    This is just something we tried in rats."
  • 9:48 - 9:52
    And they gave me, like,
    a little plastic Ziploc bag
  • 9:52 - 9:54
    of a small amount of powder.
  • 9:54 - 9:56
    They said, "Don't give it to any human,"
  • 9:56 - 10:00
    and they gave me a piece of paper
    which said it was a patent,
  • 10:00 - 10:04
    and from that, we had to figure out
    a way to make this medicine.

    A hundred chemists in the U.S.
    at the top universities
  • 10:07 - 10:12
    all swore that little patent
    could never be turned into a medicine.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
    If it was turned into a medicine,
    it could never be delivered
  • 10:15 - 10:18
    because it had a half-life
    of only 45 minutes.
  • 10:18 - 10:23
    CA: And yet, a year or two later,
    you were there with a medicine
  • 10:23 - 10:27
    that worked for Jenesis.
  • 10:27 - 10:32
    MR: Chris, the astonishing thing
    is that this absolutely worthless
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    piece of powder
  • 10:34 - 10:38
    that had the sparkle of a promise
    of hope for Jenesis
  • 10:38 - 10:43
    is not only keeping Jenesis
    and other people alive today,
  • 10:43 - 10:47
    but produces almost a billion
    and a half dollars a year in revenue.

    CA: So here you go.

    So you took this company public, right?

    And made an absolute fortune.

    And how much have you paid Glaxo,
    by the way, after that 25,000?

    MR: Yeah, well, every year we pay them
    10 percent of 1.5 billion,
  • 11:07 - 11:11
    150 million dollars,
    last year 100 million dollars.
  • 11:11 - 11:14
    It's the best return on investment
    they ever received. (Laughter)

    CA: And the best news of all, I guess,
  • 11:16 - 11:18
    is this.
  • 11:18 - 11:22
    MR: Yes. Jenesis is an absolutely
    brilliant young lady.
  • 11:22 - 11:25
    She's alive, healthy today at 30.
  • 11:25 - 11:27
    You see me, Bina and Jenesis there.

    The most amazing thing about Jenesis
  • 11:30 - 11:33
    is that while she could do
    anything with her life,
  • 11:33 - 11:37
    and believe me, if you grew up
    your whole life with people
  • 11:37 - 11:40
    in your face saying
    that you've got a fatal disease,
  • 11:40 - 11:45
    I would probably run to Tahiti and just
    not want to run into anybody again.

    But instead she chooses to work
    in United Therapeutics.

    She says she wants to do all she can
    to help other people
  • 11:51 - 11:54
    with orphan diseases get medicines,
  • 11:54 - 11:58
    and today, she's our project leader
    for all telepresence activities,
  • 11:58 - 12:02
    where she helps digitally unite
    the entire company to work together
  • 12:02 - 12:05
    to find cures for pulmonary hypertension.
  • 12:05 - 12:08
    CA: But not everyone who has this disease
    has been so fortunate.
  • 12:08 - 12:12
    There are still many people dying,
    and you are tackling that too. How?

    MR: Exactly, Chris. There's some 3,000
    people a year in the United States alone,
  • 12:17 - 12:20
    perhaps 10 times that number worldwide,
  • 12:20 - 12:22
    who continue to die of this illness
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    because the medicines
    slow down the progression
  • 12:24 - 12:26
    but they don't halt it.

    The only cure for pulmonary hypertension,
    pulmonary fibrosis,
  • 12:31 - 12:33
    cystic fibrosis, emphysema,
  • 12:33 - 12:36
    COPD, what Leonard Nimoy just died of,
  • 12:36 - 12:39
    is a lung transplant,
  • 12:39 - 12:44
    but sadly, there are only enough
    available lungs for 2,000 people
  • 12:44 - 12:47
    in the U.S. a year
    to get a lung transplant,
  • 12:47 - 12:50
    whereas nearly a half
    million people a year
  • 12:50 - 12:52
    die of end-stage lung failure.
  • 12:52 - 12:55
    CA: So how can you address that?
  • 12:55 - 12:57
    MR: So I conceptualize the possibility
  • 12:57 - 13:01
    that just like we keep cars and planes
  • 13:01 - 13:03
    and buildings going forever
  • 13:03 - 13:07
    with an unlimited supply
    of building parts and machine parts,
  • 13:07 - 13:11
    why can't we create an unlimited supply
    of transplantable organs
  • 13:11 - 13:13
    to keep people living indefinitely,
  • 13:13 - 13:16
    and especially people with lung disease.
  • 13:16 - 13:22
    So we've teamed up with the decoder
    of the human genome, Craig Venter,
  • 13:22 - 13:23
    and the company he founded
  • 13:23 - 13:27
    with Peter Diamandis,
    the founder of the X Prize,
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    to genetically modify
  • 13:29 - 13:31
    the pig genome
  • 13:31 - 13:35
    so that the pig's organs will not
    be rejected by the human body

    and thereby to create an unlimited supply

    of transplantable organs.

    We do this through our company,
    United Therapeutics.

    CA: So you really believe that within,
    what, a decade,

    that this shortage of transplantable lungs
    maybe be cured, through these guys?

    I'm as certain of that as I was
    of the success that we've had

    It's straightforward engineering away
    one gene after another.

    We're so lucky to be born in the time
    that sequencing genomes

    in computer processing

    such that by the 2020s, as we saw

    there will be information technology

    that processes information
    and the world around us

    at the same rate as a human mind.

    CA: And so that being so, you're actually
    getting ready for this world

    by believing that we will soon
    be able to, what,

    actually take the contents of our brains
    and somehow preserve them forever?

    How do you describe that?

    MR: Well, Chris, what we're working on
    is creating a situation

    where people can create a mind file,

    and a mind file is the collection
    of their mannerisms, personality,

    recollection, feelings,
  • 15:37 - 15:39
    beliefs, attitudes and values,

    everything that we've poured today
    into Google, into Amazon, into Facebook,

    and all of this information stored there
    will be able, in the next couple decades,

    once software is able
    to recapitulate consciousness,

    be able to revive the consciousness
    which is imminent in our mind file.

    messing around with this.

    my beloved spouse, Bina.

    MR: Yes. Not just Bina, but everybody.

    You know, it costs us virtually nothing
    to store our mind files

    on Facebook, Instagram, what-have-you.

    Social media is I think one of the most
    extraordinary inventions of our time,

    and as apps become available
    that will allow us

    to out-Siri Siri, better and better,

    and develop consciousness
    operating systems,

    everybody in the world,

    will be able to develop
    mind clones of themselves

    that will have their own life on the web.

    CA: So the thing is, Martine,

    that in any normal conversation,
    this would sound stark-staring mad,

    but in the context of your life,
    what you've done,

    some of the things we've heard this week,

    the constructed realities
    that our minds give,

    I mean, you wouldn't bet against it.

    MR: Well, I think it's really nothing

    If anything, I'm perhaps a bit
    of a communicator of activities

    that are being undertaken
    by the greatest companies

    in China, Japan, India, the U.S., Europe.

    There are tens of millions of people
    working on writing code

    that expresses more and more aspects
    of our human consciousness,

    and you don't have to be a genius
    to see that all these threads

    are going to come together
    and ultimately create human consciousness,

    and it's something we'll value.

    There are so many things
    to do in this life,

    and if we could have a simulacrum,
    a digital doppelgänger of ourselves

    that helps us process books, do shopping,

    be our best friends,

    I believe our mind clones,
