Emergency shelters made from paper

  • Not Synced
    Hi. I am an architect.
  • Not Synced
I am the only architect in the world
  • Not Synced
making building out of paper like this cardboard tube,
  • Not Synced
and this exhibition is the first one I did
  • Not Synced
    using paper tubes.
  • Not Synced
1986, much, much longer before people started talking
  • Not Synced
about ecological issues and environmental issues,
  • Not Synced
I just started testing the paper tube
  • Not Synced
in order to use this as a building structure.
  • Not Synced
It's very complicated to test the new material for the building,
  • Not Synced
but this is much stronger than I expected,
  • Not Synced
and also it's very easy to waterproof,
  • Not Synced
and also, because it's industrial material,
  • Not Synced
    it's also possible to fireproof.
  • Not Synced
Then I built the temporary structure, 1990.
  • Not Synced
This is the first temporary building out of paper.
  • Not Synced
There are 330 tubes, diameter 55,
  • Not Synced
but there are only 12 tubes diameter,
  • Not Synced
it's 120 centimeters, four feet wide.
  • Not Synced
As you see it in the photo, inside is the toilet.
  • Not Synced
In case you're finished with toilet paper,
  • Not Synced
you can tear those things out of the wall.
  • Not Synced
    So it's very useful.
  • Not Synced
Year 2000, there was a big expo in Germany.
  • Not Synced
I was asked to design the building,
  • Not Synced
because [inaud] expo of the environmental issues.
  • Not Synced
So I was chosen to build the pavilion out of paper tubes,
  • Not Synced
    recyclable paper.
  • Not Synced
My goal of the design is not when it's completed.
  • Not Synced
My goal was when building was demolished,
  • Not Synced
because each country make a lot of pavilions,
  • Not Synced
but after half a year, we create a lot of industrial waste,
  • Not Synced
so my building has to be reused or recycled.
  • Not Synced
    After, the building was recycled.
  • Not Synced
So that was the goal of my design.
  • Not Synced
Then I was very lucky to win the competition
  • Not Synced
of building the second Pompidou center in France
  • Not Synced
    in the city of Metz.
  • Not Synced
    Because I was so poor,
  • Not Synced
I wanted to rent an office in Paris,
  • Not Synced
    but I couldn't afford,
  • Not Synced
so I decided to bring my students to Paris
  • Not Synced
to build our office on top of the Pompidou Center in Paris
  • Not Synced
    by ourselves.
  • Not Synced
So we brought the paper tubes and the wooden joints
  • Not Synced
to complete the 35 meter long office.
  • Not Synced
We stayed there for six years without paying any rent.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter) (Applause)
  • Not Synced
But I had one big problem.
  • Not Synced
Because we are part of the exhibition,
  • Not Synced
even if my friend want to see me, they have to buy a ticket to see me.
  • Not Synced
    That's what the problem was.
  • Not Synced
Then I completed the Pompidou Center in Metz.
  • Not Synced
It's a very popular museum now,
  • Not Synced
and I created a big monument for the government.
  • Not Synced
But then I was very disappointed
  • Not Synced
in my profession as an architect,
  • Not Synced
because we are not helping, we are not working for society,
  • Not Synced
but we are working for privileged people,
  • Not Synced
    rich people, government, developers.
  • Not Synced
    They have money and power.
  • Not Synced
    Those are invisible.
  • Not Synced
So they hire us to visualize their power and money
  • Not Synced
    by making monumental architecture.
  • Not Synced
That is our profession, even historically the same,
  • Not Synced
even now we are doing the same.
  • Not Synced
So I was very disappointed we are not working for society,
  • Not Synced
even though there are many people
  • Not Synced
who lost their houses by natural disaster.
  • Not Synced
But I must say they are no longer natural disasters.
  • Not Synced
For example, earthquakes never kill people,
  • Not Synced
but collapse of the buildings kill people.
  • Not Synced
    That's the responsibility of architects.
  • Not Synced
Then people need some temporary housing,
  • Not Synced
but there are no architect working there
  • Not Synced
because we are too busy working for privileged people.
  • Not Synced
So I thought, even as an architect,
  • Not Synced
we can involve in the quick construction of the temporary housing.
  • Not Synced
    We can make it better.
  • Not Synced
So that is why I started working in the disaster area.
  • Not Synced
1994, there was a big disaster in Rwanda, Africa.
  • Not Synced
Two tribes, Hutu and Tutsi, fight each other.
  • Not Synced
Over two million people became refugees.
  • Not Synced
But I was so surprised to see the shelter, refugee camp
  • Not Synced
    organized by the U.N.
  • Not Synced
They're so far, and they are freezing
  • Not Synced
with blanket during the rainy season,
  • Not Synced
and the shelter built by the U.N.,
  • Not Synced
they are just providing plastic sheet,
  • Not Synced
and the refugee has to cut the trees, and just like this.
  • Not Synced
But over two million people cut trees,
  • Not Synced
    just become big, heavy deforestation,
  • Not Synced
    and environmental problem.
  • Not Synced
That is why they started provided [inaud].
  • Not Synced
Very expensive, they throw them out for money,
  • Not Synced
    then cutting trees again.
  • Not Synced
So I proposed my idea to improve the situation
  • Not Synced
    using these recycled paper tubes
  • Not Synced
because this is so cheap and also so strong,
  • Not Synced
but my budget is only 50 U.S. dollars by unit.
  • Not Synced
We built 50 units to do as a monitoring test
  • Not Synced
for the durability and moisture and [inaud].
  • Not Synced
And then, year afterward, 1995, in Kobe, Japan,
  • Not Synced
    we had a big earthquake.
  • Not Synced
    Nearly 7,000 people are killed,
  • Not Synced
and the city like this Narada district,
  • Not Synced
the old city was burned, fire after the earthquake.
  • Not Synced
And also I found out there's many Vietnamese refugees
  • Not Synced
suffering and gathering at Catholic church,
  • Not Synced
all the building was totally destroyed.
  • Not Synced
So I went to there and also I proposed to the priests,
  • Not Synced
"Why don't we rebuild the church out of paper tubes?"
  • Not Synced
And he said, "Oh God, are you crazy?
  • Not Synced
After a fire, what are you proposing?"
  • Not Synced
So he never trusted me, but I didn't give up.
  • Not Synced
    I started commuting to Kobe,
  • Not Synced
and I met the society of Vietnamese people.
  • Not Synced
They were living like this with very poor plastic sheet
  • Not Synced
    in the park.
  • Not Synced
So I proposed to rebuild, with fundraising.
  • Not Synced
I made the paper tube shelter for them,
  • Not Synced
and the unit make easy to be built by student
  • Not Synced
    and also easy to demolish.
  • Not Synced
I used beer crates as a foundation.
  • Not Synced
I asked the Kirin beer company to propose,
  • Not Synced
because at that time, the Asahi beer company
  • Not Synced
make their plastic beer crates red,
  • Not Synced
which doesn't go with the color of the paper tubes.
  • Not Synced
The color coordination is very important.
  • Not Synced
And also I still remember, we are expecting
  • Not Synced
to have a beer inside the plastic beer crate,
  • Not Synced
    but it came empty.
  • Not Synced
So I remember it was so disappointing.
  • Not Synced
So during the summer with my students,
  • Not Synced
we built over 50 units of the shelters.
  • Not Synced
Finally the priest, finally he trusts me to rebuild.
  • Not Synced
He said, "As long as you collect money by yourself,
  • Not Synced
bring your students to build, you can do it."
  • Not Synced
So we spent five weeks to rebuild the church.
  • Not Synced
It was meant to be staying there for three years,
  • Not Synced
but actually it stayed there 10 years because people loved it.
  • Not Synced
Then, in Taiwan, they had a big earthquake,
  • Not Synced
and we proposed to donate this church,
  • Not Synced
    so we dismantled them,
  • Not Synced
we sent over to build by volunteer people.
  • Not Synced
It stayed there in Taiwan as a permanent church even now.
  • Not Synced
So this building became a permanent building.
  • Not Synced
Then I wonder, what is permanent and what is temporary building?
  • Not Synced
Even the building made in paper
  • Not Synced
can be permanent as long as people loves it.
  • Not Synced
Even concrete building can be very temporary
  • Not Synced
if that is made to make money.
  • Not Synced
In 1999, in Turkey, the big earthquake,
  • Not Synced
I went there to use the local material to build the shelter.
  • Not Synced
2001, in West India, I built also shelter.
  • Not Synced
In 2004, in Sri Lanka, after the Sumatran earthquake
  • Not Synced
and tsunami, I rebuilt Islamic fishermen's village.
  • Not Synced
And in 2008, in Chengdu, Sichuan area in China,
  • Not Synced
    nearly 70,000 people were killed,
  • Not Synced
and also especially many of the schools were destroyed
  • Not Synced
because of the corruption between the authority and the contractor.
  • Not Synced
I was asked to rebuild the temporary church.
  • Not Synced
I brought my Japanese student to work with the Chinese student.
  • Not Synced
In one month, we completed nine classrooms,
  • Not Synced
    over 500 square meters.
  • Not Synced
It's still used, even after the current earthquake in China.
  • Not Synced
In 2009, in Italy, L'Aquila, also they had big earthquake,
  • Not Synced
and the building just in photo,
  • Not Synced
    former Prime Minister Berlusconi
  • Not Synced
and Japanese former former former former Prime Minister Mr. Aso
  • Not Synced
    -- (Laughter) (Applause) --
  • Not Synced
you know, because we have to change the Prime Minister ever year,
  • Not Synced
and they are very kind [inaud] my model.
  • Not Synced
I proposed the big rebuilding the temporary music hall,
  • Not Synced
because L'Aquila is very famous for music
  • Not Synced
and all the concert halls were destroyed,
  • Not Synced
    so musicians were moving out.
  • Not Synced
So I proposed to the mayor,
  • Not Synced
I'd like to rebuild the temporary auditorium.
  • Not Synced
He said, "As long as you bring your money, you can do it."
  • Not Synced
    And I was very lucky.
  • Not Synced
    Mr. Berlusconi brought GM summit,
  • Not Synced
and our former Prime Minister came,
  • Not Synced
so they helped us to collect money,
  • Not Synced
and I got half a million Euros from the Japanese government
  • Not Synced
    to rebuild this temporary auditorium.
  • Not Synced
Year 2010 in Haiti, there was a big earthquake,
  • Not Synced
but it's impossible to fly over,
  • Not Synced
so I went to Santo Domingo, next door country,
  • Not Synced
to drive six hours to get to Haiti
  • Not Synced
with the local students in Santo Domingo
  • Not Synced
to build 50 units of shelter out of local paper tubes.
  • Not Synced
This is what happened in Japan two years ago in northern Japan.
  • Not Synced
    After the earthquake and tsunami,
  • Not Synced
people had to be evacuated in the big roof like gymnasium.
  • Not Synced
But look at this. It's no privacy.
  • Not Synced
    People suffer mentally and physically.
  • Not Synced
So we went to there to build the partitions
  • Not Synced
with all the student volunteers with paper tubes,
  • Not Synced
just a very simple shelter out of tube frame and the curtain.
  • Not Synced
However, some of the facility authority
  • Not Synced
doesn't want us to do it, because, they said,
  • Not Synced
simply, it's become more difficult to control them.
  • Not Synced
But it's really necessary to do it.
  • Not Synced
They don't have enough flat area to build
  • Not Synced
standard government single-story housing like this one.
  • Not Synced
Look at this. Even civil government is doing
  • Not Synced
such a poor construction of the temporary housing,
  • Not Synced
so dense and so messy because water is leaking,
  • Not Synced
so I thought, we have to make multi-story building
  • Not Synced
because there's no land and also it's not very comfortable.
  • Not Synced
So I proposed to the mayor while I was making partitions.
  • Not Synced
Finally I met a very nice mayor in Onagawa village
  • Not Synced
    in Miyagi.
  • Not Synced
He asked me to build three-story housing in [inaud].
  • Not Synced
    I used the shipping container
  • Not Synced
and also the students helped us to make
  • Not Synced
    all the building furniture
  • Not Synced
    to make them comfortable,
  • Not Synced
within the budget of the government
  • Not Synced
but also the area of the house is exactly the same,
  • Not Synced
    but much more comfortable.
  • Not Synced
Many of the people want to stay here forever.
  • Not Synced
I was very happy to hear that.
  • Not Synced
Now I am working in New Zealand, Christchurch.
  • Not Synced
About 20 days before, Japanese ask the government,
  • Not Synced
    also they have big earthquake,
  • Not Synced
and many Japanese students were also killed,
  • Not Synced
and the most important cathedral of the city,
  • Not Synced
symbol of the Christchurch, was totally destroyed.
  • Not Synced
And I was asked to come to rebuild the temporary cathedral.
  • Not Synced
    So this is under construction,
  • Not Synced
and I'd like to keep building the monument
  • Not Synced
    that's beloved by people.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you very much.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you. (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you very much. (Applause)
