Paper beats plastic? How to rethink environmental folklore

    So imagine, you're in the supermarket,

    you're buying some groceries,
  • Not Synced
    and you get given the option
  • Not Synced
    for a plastic or a paper shopping bag.
  • Not Synced
    Which one do you choose if you want to do
  • Not Synced
    the right thing by the environment?
  • Not Synced
    Most people do pick the paper.
  • Not Synced
    Okay, let's think of why.
  • Not Synced
    It's brown to start with.
  • Not Synced
    Therefore, it must be good for the environment.
  • Not Synced
    It's biodegradable. It's reusable.
  • Not Synced
    In some cases, it's recyclable.
  • Not Synced
    So when people are looking at the plastic bag,
  • Not Synced
    it's likely they're thinking of something like this,
  • Not Synced
    which we all know is absolutely terrible
  • Not Synced
    and we should be avoiding at all expenses
  • Not Synced
    these kinds of environmental damages.
  • Not Synced
    But people are often not thinking
  • Not Synced
    of something like this,
  • Not Synced
    which is the other end of the spectrum.
  • Not Synced
    When we produce materials,
  • Not Synced
    we need to extract them from the environment,
  • Not Synced
    and we need a whole bunch
    of environmental impacts.
  • Not Synced
    You see, what happens is, when we need
  • Not Synced
    to make complex choices,
  • Not Synced
    us humans like really simple solutions,
  • Not Synced
    and so we often ask the simple solutions.
  • Not Synced
    And I work in design.
  • Not Synced
    I advise designers
  • Not Synced
    and innovators around sustainability,
  • Not Synced
    and everyone always says to me, "Oh Leyla,
  • Not Synced
    I just want the eco-materials."
  • Not Synced
    And I say, "Well, that's very complex,
  • Not Synced
    and we'll have to spend four hours talking about
  • Not Synced
    what exactly an eco-material means,
  • Not Synced
    because everything at some point
  • Not Synced
    comes from nature,
  • Not Synced
    and it's how you use the material
  • Not Synced
    that dictates the environmental impact.
  • Not Synced
    So what happens is, we have to rely
  • Not Synced
    on some sort of intuitive framework
  • Not Synced
    when we make decisions.
  • Not Synced
    So I like to call that intuitive framework
  • Not Synced
    our environmental folklore.
  • Not Synced
    Okay, it's either the little voice
    at the back of your head,
  • Not Synced
    or it's that gut feeling you get
  • Not Synced
    when you've done the right thing,
  • Not Synced
    so when you've picked the paper bag
  • Not Synced
    or when you've bought a fuel-efficient car.
  • Not Synced
    And environmental folklore is a really important thing
  • Not Synced
    because we're trying to do the right thing.
  • Not Synced
    But how do we know if we're actually
  • Not Synced
    reducing the net environmental impacts
  • Not Synced
    that our actions as individuals and as professionals
  • Not Synced
    and as a society are actually having
  • Not Synced
    on the natural environment?
  • Not Synced
    So the thing about environmental folklore is
  • Not Synced
    it tends to be based on our experiences,
  • Not Synced
    the things we've heard from other people.
  • Not Synced
    It doesn't tend to be based
    on any scientific framework.
  • Not Synced
    And this is really hard, because we live
  • Not Synced
    in incredibly complex systems.
  • Not Synced
    We have the human systems
  • Not Synced
    of how we communicate and interrelate
  • Not Synced
    and have our whole constructed society,
  • Not Synced
    of the industrial systems,
  • Not Synced
    which is essentially the entire economy,
  • Not Synced
    and then all of that has to operate
  • Not Synced
    within the biggest system,
  • Not Synced
    and, I would argue, the most important,
  • Not Synced
    the ecosystem.
  • Not Synced
    And you see, the choices that we make
  • Not Synced
    as an individual,
  • Not Synced
    but the choices that we make
  • Not Synced
    in every single job that we have,
  • Not Synced
    no matter how high or low
    you are in the pecking order,
  • Not Synced
    has an impact on all of these systems.
  • Not Synced
    And the thing is that we have to find ways
  • Not Synced
    if we're actually going to address sustainability
  • Not Synced
    of interlocking those complex systems
  • Not Synced
    and making better choices that result
  • Not Synced
    in net environmental gains.
  • Not Synced
    What we need to do is we need to learn
  • Not Synced
    to do more with less.
  • Not Synced
    We have an increasing population,
  • Not Synced
    and everybody likes their mobile phones,
  • Not Synced
    especially in this situation here.
  • Not Synced
    So we need to find innovative ways of solving
  • Not Synced
    some of these problems that we face.
  • Not Synced
    And that's where this process called
  • Not Synced
    life cycle thinking comes in.
  • Not Synced
    So essentially, everything that is created
  • Not Synced
    goes through a series of life cycle stages,
  • Not Synced
    and we use this scientific process
  • Not Synced
    called life cycle assessment,
  • Not Synced
    or in America, you guys say life cycle analysis,
  • Not Synced
    in order to have a clearer picture of how
  • Not Synced
    everything that we do in the
    technical part of those systems
  • Not Synced
    affects the natural environment.
  • Not Synced
    So we go all the way back
  • Not Synced
    to the extraction of raw materials,
  • Not Synced
    and then we look at manufacturing,
  • Not Synced
    we look at packaging and transportation,
  • Not Synced
    use, and end of life,
  • Not Synced
    and at every single one of these stages,
  • Not Synced
    the things that we do
  • Not Synced
    have an interaction with the natural environment,
  • Not Synced
    and we can monitor how that interaction
  • Not Synced
    is actually affecting the systems and services
  • Not Synced
    that make life on earth possible.
  • Not Synced
    And through doing this,
  • Not Synced
    we've learned some absolutely fascinating things.
  • Not Synced
    And we've busted a bunch of myths.
  • Not Synced
    So to start with,
  • Not Synced
    there's a word that's used a lot.
  • Not Synced
    It's used a lot in marketing,
  • Not Synced
    and it's used a lot, I think, in our conversation
  • Not Synced
    when we're talking about sustainability,
  • Not Synced
    and that's the word biodegradability.
  • Not Synced
    Now biodegradability is a material property.
  • Not Synced
    It is not a definition of environmental benefits.
  • Not Synced
    Allow me to explain.
  • Not Synced
    When something natural,
  • Not Synced
    something that's made from a cellulose fiber
  • Not Synced
    like a piece of bread, even, or any food waste,
  • Not Synced
    or even a piece of paper,
  • Not Synced
    when something natural ends up
  • Not Synced
    in the natural environment, it degrades normally.
  • Not Synced
    Its little carbon molecules that it stored up
  • Not Synced
    as it was growing are naturally released
  • Not Synced
    back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide,
  • Not Synced
    but this is a net situation.
  • Not Synced
    Most natural things
  • Not Synced
    don't actually end up in nature.
  • Not Synced
    Most of the things, the waste that we produce,
  • Not Synced
    end up in landfill.
  • Not Synced
    Landfill is a different environment.
  • Not Synced
    In landfill, those same carbon molecules
  • Not Synced
    degrade in a different way,
  • Not Synced
    because a landfill is anaerobic.
  • Not Synced
    It's tightly compacted and hot.
  • Not Synced
    Those same molecules, they become methane,
  • Not Synced
    and methane is a 25 times more potent
  • Not Synced
    greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
  • Not Synced
    So our old lettuces and products
  • Not Synced
    that we have thrown out that are made
  • Not Synced
    out of biodegradable materials,
  • Not Synced
    if they end up in landfill,
  • Not Synced
    contribute to climate change.
  • Not Synced
    You see, there are facilities now
  • Not Synced
    that can actually capture that methane
  • Not Synced
    and generate power,
  • Not Synced
    displacing the need for fossil fuel power,
  • Not Synced
    but we need to be smart about this.
  • Not Synced
    We need to identify how we can start to leverage
  • Not Synced
    these types of things that are already happening
  • Not Synced
    and start to design systems and services
  • Not Synced
    that alleviate these problems.
  • Not Synced
    Because right now, what people do
    is they turn around and they say,
  • Not Synced
    "Let's ban plastic bags. We'll give people paper
  • Not Synced
    because that is better for the environment."
  • Not Synced
    But if you're throwing it in the bin,
  • Not Synced
    and your local landfill facility
  • Not Synced
    is just a normal one,
  • Not Synced
    then we're having what's called a double negative.
  • Not Synced
    Okay, I'm also a product designer by trade.
  • Not Synced
    I then did social science.
  • Not Synced
    And so I'm absolutely fascinated
  • Not Synced
    by consumer goods and how the consumer goods
  • Not Synced
    that we have kind of become immune to
  • Not Synced
    that fill our lives
  • Not Synced
    have an impact on the natural environment.
  • Not Synced
    And these guys are, like, serial offenders,
  • Not Synced
    and I'm pretty sure everyone in this room
  • Not Synced
    has a refrigerator.
  • Not Synced
    Now America has this amazing ability
  • Not Synced
    to keep growing refrigerator.
  • Not Synced
    In the last few years, they've grown one cubic foot
  • Not Synced
    on average, the standard size
  • Not Synced
    of a refrigerator,
  • Not Synced
    and the problem is, they're so big now,
  • Not Synced
    it's easier for us to buy more food
  • Not Synced
    that we can't eat or find.
  • Not Synced
    I mean, I have things at the back of my refrigerator
  • Not Synced
    that have been there for years, all right?
  • Not Synced
    And so what happens is, we waste more food.
  • Not Synced
    And as I was just explaining,
    food waste is a problem.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, here in the U.S., 40 percent
  • Not Synced
    of food purchased for the home is wasted.
  • Not Synced
    Half of the world's produced food is wasted.
  • Not Synced
    That's the latest U.N. stats. Up to half of the food.
  • Not Synced
    It's insane. It's 1.3 billion tons of food per annum.
  • Not Synced
    And I blame it on the refrigerator,
  • Not Synced
    well, especially in Western cultures,
  • Not Synced
    because it makes it easier.
  • Not Synced
    I mean, there's a lot of complex
    systems going on here.
  • Not Synced
    I don't want to make it so simplistic.
  • Not Synced
    But the refrigerator is a serious contributor to this,
  • Not Synced
    and one of the features of it
  • Not Synced
    is the crisper drawer.
  • Not Synced
    You all got crisper drawers?
  • Not Synced
    You know, the draw that you put your lettuces in?
  • Not Synced
    Lettuces have a habit of going soggy
  • Not Synced
    in the crisper drawer, don't they.
  • Not Synced
    Yeah? Soggy lettuces?
  • Not Synced
    In the U.K., this is such a problem
  • Not Synced
    that there was a government report a few years ago
  • Not Synced
    that actually said the second-biggest offender
  • Not Synced
    of wasted food in the U.K. is the soggy lettuce.
  • Not Synced
    It was called "the soggy lettuce report."
  • Not Synced
    Okay? So this is a problem, people.
  • Not Synced
    These poor little lettuces are getting thrown out
  • Not Synced
    left, right, and center, because the crisper drawers
  • Not Synced
    are not designed to actually keep things crisp.
  • Not Synced
    Okay. You need a tight environment.
  • Not Synced
    You need, like, an airless environment
  • Not Synced
    to prevent the degrading that
    would happen naturally.
  • Not Synced
    But the crisper drawers, they're just a drawer
  • Not Synced
    with, like, a slightly better seal.
  • Not Synced
    Anyway, I'm clearly obsessed. All right?
  • Not Synced
    Don't ever invite me over because I'll just
  • Not Synced
    start going through your refrigerator
  • Not Synced
    and looking at all sorts of things like that.
  • Not Synced
    But essentially, this is a big problem.
  • Not Synced
    Because when we lose something
    like the lettuce from the system,
  • Not Synced
    not only do we have that impact I just explained
  • Not Synced
    at the end of life,
  • Not Synced
    but we actually have had to grow that lettuce.
  • Not Synced
    The life cycle impact of that lettuce is astronomical.
  • Not Synced
    We've had to clear land.
  • Not Synced
    We've had to plant seeds, phosphorus,
  • Not Synced
    fertilizers, nutrients, water, sunlight.
  • Not Synced
    All of the embodied impacts in that lettuce
  • Not Synced
    get lost from the system,
  • Not Synced
    which makes it a far bigger environmental impact
  • Not Synced
    than the loss of the energy from the fridge.
  • Not Synced
    So we need to design things like this far better
  • Not Synced
    if we're going to start addressing
    serious environmental problems.
  • Not Synced
    We could start with the crisper drawer and the size.
  • Not Synced
    For those of you in the room who do design fridges,
  • Not Synced
    that would be great.
  • Not Synced
    Okay, so the problem is, so imagine if we
  • Not Synced
    actually started to reconsider how we design things.
  • Not Synced
    So I look at the refrigerator as a sign of modernity,
  • Not Synced
    but we actually haven't really changed the design
  • Not Synced
    of them that much since the 1950s.
  • Not Synced
    A little bit, but essentially they're still big boxes,
  • Not Synced
    cold boxes that we store stuff in.
  • Not Synced
    So imagine if we actually really started
  • Not Synced
    to identify these problems and use that
  • Not Synced
    as the foundation for finding innovative and elegant
  • Not Synced
    design solutions that will solve those problems.
  • Not Synced
    This is design-led system change,
  • Not Synced
    design dictating the way in which the system
  • Not Synced
    can be far more sustainable.
  • Not Synced
    Forty percent food waste is a major problem.
  • Not Synced
    Imagine if we designed fridges that halved that.
  • Not Synced
    Another item that I find fascinating
  • Not Synced
    is the electric tea kettle,
  • Not Synced
    which I found out that you guys don't really,
  • Not Synced
    you don't do tea kettles in
    this country, really, do you.
  • Not Synced
    But that's really big in the U.K.
  • Not Synced
    Ninety-seven percent of households
  • Not Synced
    in the United Kingdom own an electric tea kettle.
  • Not Synced
    So they're very popular.
  • Not Synced
    And, I mean, if I were to work with a design firm
  • Not Synced
    or a designer, and they were designing one of these,
  • Not Synced
    and they wanted to do it eco,
  • Not Synced
    they'd usually ask me two things.
  • Not Synced
    They'd say, "Leyla, how do I
    make it technically efficient?"
  • Not Synced
    Because obviously energy's
    a problem with this product.
  • Not Synced
    Or, "How do I make it green materials?
  • Not Synced
    How do I make the materials green
  • Not Synced
    in the manufacturing?"
  • Not Synced
    Would you ask those questions?
  • Not Synced
    They seem logical, right? Yeah.
  • Not Synced
    Well I'd say, "You're looking at the wrong problems."
  • Not Synced
    Because the problem is with use.
  • Not Synced
    It's with how people use the product.
  • Not Synced
    Sixty-five percent of Brits
  • Not Synced
    admit to over-filling their kettle
  • Not Synced
    when they only need one cup of tea.
  • Not Synced
    All of this extra water that's being boiled
  • Not Synced
    requires energy, and it's been calculated
  • Not Synced
    that in one day of extra energy use
  • Not Synced
    from boiling kettles
  • Not Synced
    is enough to light all of the streetlights
  • Not Synced
    in England for a night.
  • Not Synced
    But this is the thing, right?
  • Not Synced
    This is what I call a product person failure.
  • Not Synced
    But we've got a product system failure
    going on with these little guys,
  • Not Synced
    and they're so ubiquitous, you know,
  • Not Synced
    you don't even notice they're there.
  • Not Synced
    And this guy over here, though, he does.
  • Not Synced
    He's named Simon.
  • Not Synced
    Simon works for the national
    electricity company in the U.K.
  • Not Synced
    He has a very important job of monitoring
  • Not Synced
    all of the electricity coming into the system
  • Not Synced
    to make sure there is enough
  • Not Synced
    that it powers everybody's homes.
  • Not Synced
    He's also watching television.
  • Not Synced
    The reason is is because there's a unique
  • Not Synced
    phenomenon that happens in the U.K.
  • Not Synced
    the moment that very popular TV shows end.
  • Not Synced
    The minute the ad break comes on,
  • Not Synced
    this man has to rush
  • Not Synced
    to buy nuclear power from France,
  • Not Synced
    because everybody turns their kettles on
  • Not Synced
    at the same time.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    1.5 million kettles, seriously problematic.
  • Not Synced
    So imagine if you designed kettles,
  • Not Synced
    you actually found a way to
    solve these system failures,
  • Not Synced
    because this is a huge amount of pressure
  • Not Synced
    on the system,
  • Not Synced
    just because the product hasn't
    thought about the problem
  • Not Synced
    that it's going to have when it exists in the world.
  • Not Synced
    Now, I looked at a number of
    kettles available on the market,
  • Not Synced
    and found the minimum fill lines,
  • Not Synced
    so the little piece of information that tells you
  • Not Synced
    how much you need to put in there,
  • Not Synced
    was between two and a five-and-a-half cups of water
  • Not Synced
    just to make one cup of tea.
  • Not Synced
    So this kettle here is an example of one where
  • Not Synced
    it actually has two boiling chambers,
  • Not Synced
    or, sorry, two reservoirs.
  • Not Synced
    One's a boiling chamber, and one's the water holder.
  • Not Synced
    The user actually has to push that button
  • Not Synced
    to get their hot water boiled,
  • Not Synced
    which means, because we're all lazy,
  • Not Synced
    you only fill exactly what you need.
  • Not Synced
    And this is what I call behavior-changing products:
  • Not Synced
    products, systems, or services
  • Not Synced
    that intervene and solve these problems up front.
  • Not Synced
    Now, this is a technology arena,
  • Not Synced
    so obviously these things are quite popular,
  • Not Synced
    but I think if we're going to keep
  • Not Synced
    designing, buying, and using and throwing out
  • Not Synced
    these kinds of products at the rate we currently do,
  • Not Synced
    which is astronomically high,
  • Not Synced
    there are seven billion people, right,
  • Not Synced
    who live in the world right now.
  • Not Synced
    There are six billion mobile phone subscriptions
  • Not Synced
    as of last year.
  • Not Synced
    Every single year, 1.5 billion mobile phones
  • Not Synced
    roll off production lines,
  • Not Synced
    and some companies report their production rate
  • Not Synced
    as being greater than the human birthrate.
  • Not Synced
    152 million phones were thrown
    out in the U.S. last year.
  • Not Synced
    Only 11 percent were recycled.
  • Not Synced
    I'm from Australia. We have a
    population of 22 million. Don't laugh.
  • Not Synced
    And it's been reported that 22 million phones
  • Not Synced
    are in people's drawers.
  • Not Synced
    We need to find ways of solving
    the problems around this,
  • Not Synced
    because these things are so complicated.
  • Not Synced
    They have so much locked up inside them.
  • Not Synced
    Gold: did you know that it's actually cheaper now
  • Not Synced
    to get gold out of a ton of old mobile phones
  • Not Synced
    than it is out of a ton of gold ore?
  • Not Synced
    There's a number of highly complex and valuable
  • Not Synced
    materials embodied inside these things,
  • Not Synced
    so we need to find ways of encouraging disassembly,
  • Not Synced
    because this is otherwise what happens.
  • Not Synced
    This is a community in Ghana,
  • Not Synced
    and e-waste is reported, or electronic waste
  • Not Synced
    is reported by the U.N.
  • Not Synced
    as being up to 50 million tons trafficked.
  • Not Synced
    This is how they get the gold
  • Not Synced
    and the other valuable materials out.
  • Not Synced
    They burn the electronic waste
  • Not Synced
    in open spaces.
  • Not Synced
    These are communities, and this
    is happening all over the world.
  • Not Synced
    And because we don't see the ramifications
  • Not Synced
    of the choices that we make as designers,
  • Not Synced
    as businesspeople, as consumers,
  • Not Synced
    then these kinds of externalities happen,
  • Not Synced
    and these are people's lives.
  • Not Synced
    So we need to find smarter, more systems-based,
  • Not Synced
    innovative solutions to these problems,
  • Not Synced
    if we're going to start to live
    sustainably within this world.
  • Not Synced
    So imagine if, when you bought your mobile phone,
  • Not Synced
    your new one because you replaced your old one
  • Not Synced
    — after 15 to 18 months is the average time
  • Not Synced
    that people replace their phones, by the way —
  • Not Synced
    so if we're going to keep this kind of expedient
  • Not Synced
    mobile phone replacing, then we should
  • Not Synced
    be looking at closing the loop on the systems.
  • Not Synced
    The people who produce these phones,
  • Not Synced
    and some of which I'm sure
    are in the room right now,
  • Not Synced
    could potentially look at what
    we call closed-loop systems,
  • Not Synced
    or product system services,
  • Not Synced
    so identifying that there is a market demand
  • Not Synced
    and that market demand's not going to go anywhere,
  • Not Synced
    so you design the product to solve the problem.
  • Not Synced
    Design for disassembly, design for light-weighting.
  • Not Synced
    We heard some of those kinds of strategies
  • Not Synced
    being used in the Tesla Motors car today.
  • Not Synced
    These kinds of approaches are not hard,
  • Not Synced
    but understanding the system
  • Not Synced
    and then looking for viable, market-driven
  • Not Synced
    consumer demand alternatives
  • Not Synced
    is how we can start radically altering
  • Not Synced
    the sustainability agenda,
  • Not Synced
    because I hate to break it to you all:
  • Not Synced
    consumption is the biggest problem.
  • Not Synced
    But design is one of the best solutions.
  • Not Synced
    These kinds of products are everywhere.
  • Not Synced
    By identifying alternative ways of doing things,
  • Not Synced
    we can actually start to innovate,
  • Not Synced
    and I say actually start to innovate.
  • Not Synced
    I'm sure everyone in this room is very innovative.
  • Not Synced
    But in the regards to using sustainability
  • Not Synced
    as a parameter, as a criteria
  • Not Synced
    for fueling systems-based solutions,
  • Not Synced
    because as I've just demonstrated
    with these simple products,
  • Not Synced
    they're participating in these major problems.
  • Not Synced
    So we need to look across the entire life
  • Not Synced
    of the things that we do.
  • Not Synced
    If you just had paper or plastic,
  • Not Synced
    obviously reusable is far more beneficial,
  • Not Synced
    then the paper is worse,
  • Not Synced
    and the paper is worse because it weighs
  • Not Synced
    four to 10 times more than the plastic,
  • Not Synced
    and when we actually compare,
    from a life cycle perspective,
  • Not Synced
    a kilo of plastic and a kilo of paper,
  • Not Synced
    the paper is far better,
  • Not Synced
    but the functionality of a plastic or a paper bag
  • Not Synced
    to carry your groceries home
  • Not Synced
    is not done with a kilo of each material.
  • Not Synced
    It's done with a very small amount of plastic
  • Not Synced
    and quite a lot more paper.
  • Not Synced
    Because functionality defines environmental impact,
  • Not Synced
    and I said earlier that the designers
    always ask me for the eco-materials.
  • Not Synced
    I say, you know, there's only a few materials
  • Not Synced
    that you should completely avoid.
  • Not Synced
    The rest of them, it's all about application,
  • Not Synced
    and at the end of the day, everything
    we design and produce in the economy
  • Not Synced
    or buy as consumers is done so for function.
  • Not Synced
    We want something, therefore we buy it.
  • Not Synced
    So breaking things back down and delivering
  • Not Synced
    smartly, elegantly, sophisticated solutions
  • Not Synced
    that take into consideration the entire system
  • Not Synced
    and the entire life of the thing, everything,
  • Not Synced
    all the way back to the extraction
    through to the end of life,
  • Not Synced
    we can start to actually find
    really innovative solutions.
  • Not Synced
    And I'll just leave you with one very quick thing
  • Not Synced
    that a designer said to me recently who I work with,
  • Not Synced
    a senior designer, I said,
  • Not Synced
    "How come you're not doing sustainability?
  • Not Synced
    You know, I know you know this."
  • Not Synced
    And he said, "Well, recently I pitched
    a sustainability project to a client,
  • Not Synced
    and turned and he said to me,
  • Not Synced
    'I know it's going to cost less,
  • Not Synced
    I know it's going to sell more,
  • Not Synced
    but we're not pioneers, because
    pioneers have arrows in their backs.'"
  • Not Synced
    I think we've got a roomful of pioneers,
  • Not Synced
    and I hope there are far more pioneers out there,
  • Not Synced
    because we need to solve these problems.
