An American Fighting Against ISIS | The New York Times

  • Not Synced
I think it would be hard for us to find a
    conflict anytime soon
  • Not Synced
that is so black and white, and easy to
    pick a side in.
  • Not Synced
Yeah, I did hope for something like that.
  • Not Synced
I did hope that there would be a chance
    to split some heads, yeah.
  • Not Synced
You know, I have no quarrels with
    religion of Islam
  • Not Synced
The problem with ISIS is they're a-
    they're not people.
  • Not Synced
The things they are doing are horrible.
  • Not Synced
    -Reserve it
  • Not Synced
    My name is Patrick Maxwell.
  • Not Synced
In December I traveled to Sulaymaniyah,
    Kurdistan
  • Not Synced
to join the Kurdish Peshmerga and fight
    against ISIS.
  • Not Synced
-We have round incoming right now
  • Not Synced
-This is very clear. There is a band
of marauders who rape women and children
  • Not Synced
and sell them into sexual slavery,
  • Not Synced
versus a people who have been
fighting for their homeland for years.
  • Not Synced
It was also a chance to have a story that
no one else could be, I guess
  • Not Synced
and have an adventure while doing it.
  • Not Synced
When I'm enlisted, I'm there to serve
    my country, protect my country,
  • Not Synced
obey the orders of the officers
    appointed over me.
  • Not Synced
As a private citizen, I'm going to have
    an adventurous sense
  • Not Synced
    and that's my own business.
  • Not Synced
I figured it out by just using Google
    and Facebook, honestly.
  • Not Synced
I talked to some people that put me in
    contact with a Peshmerga lieutenant.
  • Not Synced
I wore my old Marine Corps uniform
just because it was what I had.
  • Not Synced
My armored plate carrier over that.
  • Not Synced
A set of boots, magazine pouches.
  • Not Synced
I bought a plane ticket, and (unclear)
    in the Sulemaniyah and went.
  • Not Synced
When I touched down, it was probably 3 or 4
    in morning, so dark obviously.
  • Not Synced
They took me to a nearby base and we stayed
    there for a while.
  • Not Synced
Peshmerga fighters, (unclear) for 6 weeks.
  • Not Synced
They're a good bunch of dudes.
  • Not Synced
    Kind of mish-mashing different weapons
    stuff like that.
  • Not Synced
Eat flatbread and rice for 2 to 3 meals a
    day.
  • Not Synced
It was different, a lot different to
    say, a US military base.
  • Not Synced
I would sleep on the floor on a ship
    container right next to them,
  • Not Synced
carry the same AK-47 they carry.
  • Not Synced
    (inaudible) the toliet 1:56-2:00
  • Not Synced
What we saw was more of a trench
    warfare scenario. 2:03
