Sissy Reed talks about Augmentative Communication

  • 0:01 - 0:04
Hi. My name is Trecia Benefield and I'm here with my friend.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
And we're here to talk about assisted technology.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
My friend here would like to introduce herself
  • 0:09 - 0:11
and show you how she's able to use
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    her communications device.
  • 0:14 - 0:22
[Sissy] My name is Glenda Reed. You can call me Sissy.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
I am president of Disabilities Unlimited
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    in Jasper, Alabama.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
[Trecia] I noticed that you are using your
  • 0:34 - 0:35
communications device. What are some of the
  • 0:35 - 0:37
things you would like people to know
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    about using assisted technology?
  • 0:44 - 0:48
[Sissy] This is my voice. This is not a toy.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Wait for me to answer your question. Just
  • 0:51 - 0:55
because you know me doesn't mean you know
  • 0:55 - 0:58
what I'm going to say. Don't put
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    words in my mouth.
  • 1:01 - 1:06
[Trecia] Isn't that the truth! [both laughing!]
  • 1:06 - 1:10
[Trecia] What assisted technology you currently use?
  • 1:13 - 1:16
[Sissy] I use a wheelchair pointer,
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    computer and phone.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
To communicate I use a communication
  • 1:22 - 1:27
device made by Dinaovox. This also allows me
  • 1:27 - 1:31
to operate my T.V. and phone which makes
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    me more independent.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
[Trecia] That is wonderful! And you can use
  • 1:37 - 1:40
it to operate your phone and T.V.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    That is marvelous!
  • 1:41 - 1:45
Um, how is using assisted technology
  • 1:45 - 1:49
increased your ability to be independent?
  • 1:49 - 1:52
[Sissy] I am able to communicate with my
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    doctors, participate in Disabilities Unlimited
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    meetings, make my own appointments,
  • 1:59 - 2:04
schedule activities for myself. I can also
  • 2:04 - 2:09
express what I like and what I don't like.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
[Trecia] That is wonderful. A lot of times
  • 2:14 - 2:17
people don't realize that the communications
  • 2:17 - 2:20
and conversation is just as important
  • 2:20 - 2:23
as being able to tell people facts.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
Um, Sissy, I noticed before you had another
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    communications device and the voice
  • 2:30 - 2:34
was very computerized. Do you like the
  • 2:34 - 2:38
female voice over this one? Better or . . .
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 2:39 - 2:45
[Teresa] I do too. It sounds real. Do you like that?
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
[Trecia] Um, I wanted to talk about kinda the
  • 3:00 - 3:04
story about getting your communication device.
  • 3:04 - 3:09
So, uh, we had a little problem with your
  • 3:09 - 3:14
case manager knowing how to bill insurance.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
[Trecia] Yes. Um, a lot of people aren't aware
  • 3:18 - 3:24
that Medicare will also pay for communication devices.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
And Medicare actually pays for the speech
  • 3:27 - 3:30
evaluation. A lot of people aren't aware that
  • 3:30 - 3:33
Medicaid doesn't pay for the speech evaluation
  • 3:33 - 3:35
but Medicare does. And there's a lot
  • 3:35 - 3:39
of people who have disabilities that have
  • 3:39 - 3:44
Medicare and Medicaid. Is that right?
  • 3:44 - 3:48
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 3:49 - 3:53
[Trecia] And how. . . it took about almost a year
  • 3:53 - 3:55
for you to get your device.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
[Trecia] So, can I talk about you?
  • 4:02 - 4:06
Can I tell some good things about you?
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
[Trecia] Sissy is a great self advocate.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
Actually, when there was a problem with case
  • 4:12 - 4:16
management and being a great self advocate,
  • 4:16 - 4:19
Sissy requested another case manager [cough noise]
  • 4:19 - 4:22
who needed to do what needed to be done.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    Is that true?
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
[Trecia] Do you think, when you look back
  • 4:32 - 4:37
on it, do you think that, um, yourself, if you hadn't
  • 4:37 - 4:41
been a self advocate, would you have
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    your communications device? If you
  • 4:43 - 4:47
hadn't been a self advocate, would you have it?
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    [Sissy] No.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
[Trecia] I'm very impressed. A lot of people
  • 4:53 - 5:02
take "no" and don't push. Right?
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
[Trecia] And another thing that was asked,
  • 5:06 - 5:10
who do you like to communicate with?
  • 5:16 - 5:31
[Sissy] [punching key sounds, long pause] Becky.
  • 5:31 - 5:34
[Trecia] Becky. Can we talk about who Becky is?
  • 5:39 - 5:43
    [Sissy] [punching key sounds] Yes.
  • 5:43 - 5:46
[Trecia] Becky is the speech therapist who
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    provided the speech evaluation which
  • 5:49 - 5:54
Medicare needs to be able to purchase
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    the communication device. So Becky
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    is a very important person.
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    But she also is
  • 6:00 - 6:01
    [Sissy] [her own voice] Yes.
  • 6:01 - 6:05
[Trecia] we found out later, Sissy's cousin.
  • 6:05 - 6:07
So not only was there a family reunion
  • 6:07 - 6:11
but there was another great piece of advocacy. And
  • 6:11 - 6:17
when families are involved, great things happen.
  • 6:17 - 6:21
Now, I only have one other question for you.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
I know that since we've gotten the
  • 6:24 - 6:26
communications device, and I say we
  • 6:26 - 6:27
because I get to talk to you now and
  • 6:27 - 6:30
you get to answer, and I love it. But
  • 6:30 - 6:36
do you think, do you prefer one words or so you
  • 6:36 - 6:43
prefer one word on your communications device?
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    [Sissy] No.
  • 6:45 - 6:49
    [Trecia] Do you prefer sentences?
  • 6:49 - 6:50
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 6:50 - 6:54
[Trecia] And another thing I wanted to ask,
  • 6:54 - 6:57
do you feel that your need to add more
  • 6:57 - 7:04
    information grows daily?
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 7:06 - 7:07
    [Trecia] And I think that's a really
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    important piece of people using
  • 7:10 - 7:13
augmentative communication, is we have to
  • 7:13 - 7:17
be open to allow communication to grow
  • 7:17 - 7:25
and not just feel that we put the informaton
  • 7:25 - 7:29
in the device and expect it to last and continue
  • 7:29 - 7:31
to be what that person needs every day
  • 7:31 - 7:34
because as we begin to communicate
  • 7:34 - 7:37
our vocabulary grows, our opportunity to
  • 7:37 - 7:40
    participate in community expands
  • 7:40 - 7:44
so the need for more words and more sentences
  • 7:44 - 7:47
is growing daily. And I think that's
  • 7:47 - 7:49
something that we both said [Sissy coughing]
  • 7:49 - 7:52
was very important to get the word
  • 7:52 - 7:58
out to people. Is that true?
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    [Sissy] Yes.
  • 8:00 - 8:04
    [Trecia] Thank you my friend.
