Ep. 6: Is Change An Illusion? (Zeno) - 8-Bit Philosophy

  • Not Synced
    8 BIT PHILOSOPHY
  • Not Synced
    (fantasy music)
  • Not Synced
    Is change merely an illusion?
  • Not Synced
    In 5th Century BC,
  • Not Synced
    Greek philosopher Parmenides proposed
  • Not Synced
that the universe was not made of many things,
  • Not Synced
but rather is a single indivisible substance:
  • Not Synced
An eternal now that encompasses all time
  • Not Synced
    and all entities.
  • Not Synced
And if the universe is one,
  • Not Synced
    then all change is impossible.
  • Not Synced
For the very idea of change suggests
  • Not Synced
    something transforming from one state
  • Not Synced
    to another.
  • Not Synced
    But according to Parmenides,
  • Not Synced
    all states occur simultaneously--
  • Not Synced
    change is impossible.
  • Not Synced
    After receiving heavy criticism
  • Not Synced
    from his contemporaries, Parmenides' student,
  • Not Synced
Zeno of Elea, came to his defense
  • Not Synced
by creating a series of paradoxes that seek
  • Not Synced
to prove that time and change are,
  • Not Synced
    in fact, utter nonsense.
  • Not Synced
    (Excite Bike Theme Song)
  • Not Synced
Consider a situation in which a motorcyclist
  • Not Synced
    races a man on foot.
  • Not Synced
Let's assume the man is given
  • Not Synced
    a 50 meter head start.
  • Not Synced
By the time the motorcyclist reaches
  • Not Synced
the 50 meter mark, the man will have moved
  • Not Synced
    a small distance forward.
  • Not Synced
And when the motorcyclist catches up
  • Not Synced
to the ensuing spot, the man will have moved
  • Not Synced
    farther still.
  • Not Synced
If there are an infinite number
  • Not Synced
    of measurable distances between
  • Not Synced
any two points, the man will always be
  • Not Synced
a minute distance ahead of the biker.
  • Not Synced
This, then, will go on indefinitely,
  • Not Synced
and the biker will never catch the man.
  • Not Synced
    But this is absurd!
  • Not Synced
For our perceptions tell us the motorcyclist
  • Not Synced
    would quickly overtake the man.
  • Not Synced
    Therefore, Zeno's paradox tells us
  • Not Synced
    that our perceptions are flawed
  • Not Synced
and that a change in distance is preposterous.
  • Not Synced
    (music)
  • Not Synced
In another of his paradoxes, Zeno talks
  • Not Synced
of an arrow being shot at a target.
  • Not Synced
If it takes the arrow one second to travel
  • Not Synced
60 feet, it would take .5 seconds to travel
  • Not Synced
    half that distance.
  • Not Synced
    A quarter second to travel
  • Not Synced
half that distance, and so on.
  • Not Synced
If this process continues, we'll have
  • Not Synced
eventually reach a unit of time during which
  • Not Synced
the arrow will occupy a space at complete rest.
  • Not Synced
Let's call this unit of duration this time
  • Not Synced
    "a moment".
  • Not Synced
If the arrow's trajectory is the sum
  • Not Synced
    of these stationary moments,
  • Not Synced
then how will the arrow ever reach its target?
  • Not Synced
    And thus motion is nonsensical.
  • Not Synced
    Zeno's paradoxes have challenged scholars,
  • Not Synced
    philosophers, and mathematicians for over
  • Not Synced
    25,000 years.
  • Not Synced
If nothing else, they force us
  • Not Synced
    to continuously reconsider our reasoning
  • Not Synced
about the nature of space and time.
