-
Many parents find themselves in a vicious cycle.
-
As car traffic increases, road safety declines, resulting in feelings of insecurity.
-
This leads to parents driving their children to school by car in order to ensure their safety.
-
This in turn, results in more traffic in and around the school.
-
The Traffic Snake Game is a solution to breaking this vicious cycle
-
by encouraging schools, children and parents to adopt walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing when travelling to and from school.
-
The game is simple.
-
Two weeks before the game begins, each school establishes its baseline.
-
Through a hands up survey the teachers note down the current travel modes of pupils.
-
This baseline helps the school to set their own target.
-
This is the percentage of sustainable trips the school wants to reach during the game.
-
During the two weeks of the campaign, pupils receive a dot for every day they travel to school using a sustainable travel mode.
-
Sustainable travel is walking, cycling, public transport or car sharing.
-
The dots are placed on a large sticker. The maximum number of dots per sticker depends on the target.
-
When a class has a full sticker, it is added to the school banner.
-
Make sure to put the school banner somewhere visible!
-
Reaching each badge on the banner can lead to a reward.
-
Rewards can vary from an apple, movie time, extra playtime, no homework or the choice of which book to read.
-
When pupils reach the head of the snake and the school target has been met, the reward they earn will be even bigger.
-
Teachers carry out a final ‘Hands-Up’ survey three weeks after the campaign.
-
This is so schools can assess the impact of the Traffic Snake Game.
-
Survey results from the whole campaign (before, during and after) are recorded on the measurement forms and submitted online for further analysis.
-
See how easy it is?
