    I've got a 45-minute presentation,
    I'm just going to speak twice as quickly.

    No, I'm only kidding, it's only
    20 -- 22 minutes.

    And I've got to think of the time
    to make sure I don't go over.

    About four moths ago, I was diagnosed
    with cancer of the colon.
  • Not Synced
    And what was it? Seven weeks ago,
    I had the operation
  • Not Synced
    which kind of went OK,
    got rid of the tumor,
  • Not Synced
    But when the colon got reconnected,
    it sprung a leak
  • Not Synced
    and I got a thing called sepsis,
    which I later discovered,
  • Not Synced
    is fatal in 60% of the cases.
  • Not Synced
    What essentially happens with sepsis is
  • Not Synced
    the organs start to pack in,
    one after the other, so
  • Not Synced
    my heart was fibrillating, I lost --
    kidneys stopped working,
  • Not Synced
    lungs stopped working, so they
    pumped me on a ventilator.
  • Not Synced
    And my wife Claire (check)
    who is here somewhere
  • Not Synced
    was told to bring the family around,
    because they didn't expect me
  • Not Synced
    to get through the week-end.
  • Not Synced
    As you can see, I survived, and this is
    actually the first talk I've given
  • Not Synced
    since I was in intensive care.
  • Not Synced
    I was in intensive care for a week.
  • Not Synced
    So, when a sick -- no, no honest
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    But when I say I'm delighted to be here,
    I'm not just being polite.
  • Not Synced
    (laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I'm talking existentially
    rather than conversationally.
  • Not Synced
    But I wanted to start with that story
    because, in that process of the journey
  • Not Synced
    from diagnosis to operation,
    I met with some remarkable people:
  • Not Synced
    on forums and ingress (check) groups,
    but I also visited and interviewed people.
  • Not Synced
    So I interviewed some people
    in the Netherlands
  • Not Synced
    who are treating their loved ones,
    who've got end-stage cancer.
  • Not Synced
    They are lay people, computer technicians
  • Not Synced
    who, frankly, conventional medicine
    has given up, they're stage 4,
  • Not Synced
    they said there is nothing more we can do,
  • Not Synced
    so they're administering
    endovenous cocktails of drugs.
  • Not Synced
    some of which are approved,
    some of which are off-patent,
  • Not Synced
    some of which are off-label (check).
  • Not Synced
    I visited a clinic, here in Germany,
    which I can't name, because
  • Not Synced
    they kind of operate in the shadows
    in fear that they'll be closed down.
  • Not Synced
    And what it seemed to me,
    once I looked beyond health
  • Not Synced
    is that this is a phenomenon
    which is happening
  • Not Synced
    in all kinds of areas of public life.
  • Not Synced
    That we're seeing what I call
    people-powered innovation.
  • Not Synced
    And I think it's a real challenge for
    institutions and organizations.
  • Not Synced
    So, why is it important?
  • Not Synced
    I think it's important because it's
    kind of a natural consequence
  • Not Synced
    of the issues I talk about
    in my book "Open".
  • Not Synced
    where, now that we're able to share
    and exchange knowledge,
  • Not Synced
    we're now at a point where
    we want to do something about it,
  • Not Synced
    we want now to be more in control
    of our own lives.
  • Not Synced
    But I think it's particularly important
    for the people who are in this room today:

    educators and human resource people. 3:05
  • Not Synced
    Because one of the things I was seeing
    is a major shift in the way
  • Not Synced
    in which we accredit knowledge
    and competencies.
  • Not Synced
    I don't know if any of you have read
    Phillip Brown's excellent book
  • Not Synced
    called "Tne Global Auction", but he talks
    about how our graduates are facing
  • Not Synced
    a high-skilled low-income future,
  • Not Synced
    because of globalization
    and a whole range of other issues.
  • Not Synced
    And recently, Laszlo Bock who is in charge
    of People Operations at Google said this
  • Not Synced
    "Your degree is not a proxy for your
    ability to any job.
  • Not Synced
    "The world only case about
    -- and pays off on --
  • Not Synced
    "what you can do with what you know
  • Not Synced
    "(and it doesn't care how you learned it)"
  • Not Synced
    So my point, I guess, is that
    unless we change the product,
  • Not Synced
    we risk being disintermediated.
  • Not Synced
    By that, I mean, learners
    can find other ways
  • Not Synced
    to get the knowledge and skills
    that they need.
  • Not Synced
    And let's face it, the product hasn't
    really changed much in decades.
  • Not Synced
    So I'd -- obvious that the best way
    to stay relevant
  • Not Synced
    is to involve users
    in the process of innovation.
  • Not Synced
    So this is what I mean by
    people-powered innovation,
  • Not Synced
    users lead users, accelerate innovation
  • Not Synced
    by either advocating for new products or
    services,
  • Not Synced
    tinkering with existing products and
    services,
  • Not Synced
    or creating new products and services
    from scratch.
  • Not Synced
    That's my kind of working definition,
  • Not Synced
    based partly on Eric von Hippel's
    definition of people-powered innovation.

    So here's some examples.

    The potato crisp, the home-baked (check)
    potato crisp
  • Not Synced
    was invented in 1853 by a chef
    called George Crum,
  • Not Synced
    who worked at a restaurant in Saratoga.
  • Not Synced
    Now he gets the credit for inventing it,
    but I think it should go to
  • Not Synced
    the disgruntled diner in that restaurant
    who kept sending the potatoes back, said
  • Not Synced
    that they were too thickly sliced.
  • Not Synced
    And this kept going backwards and forwards
  • Not Synced
    and eventually George Crum got really
    pissed off about this
  • Not Synced
    and cooked them as thin as he could,
    burning them to a crisp,
  • Not Synced
    smothered them in salt
    and then sent them out.
  • Not Synced
    And the diner loved it.
  • Not Synced
    So he thought, oh, we're on to
    something here
  • Not Synced
    but he didn't take out a patent: in fact,
    none of these examples have been patented.

    So, 1853, we've always had
    people-powered innovation.

    In fact, you could argue that up until
    the Industrial Revolution,
  • Not Synced
    that's all we had, we had

    I enjoy thinking that somebody will enjoy this video. It was a pretty cool one about innovation. I'm already innovating my children's educations by homeschooling them. YouTube and other online things are amazing tools for future education. Lynda.com is a great tool for adults to learn new career skills as well.

  • Hi again, Cathy,

    Re home schooling your children: you could use one of non language "Metadata" tracks (not Metadata: audiodescription, though, that one is really useful for scripting audio descriptions) to ask questions synced with a video, and have your children answer there: it'll create awfully long pseudo-subtitles, but it doesn't matter.
