Do the green thing
-
0:00 - 0:05Great creativity. In times of need, we need great creativity.
-
0:05 - 0:13Discuss. Great creativity is astonishingly, absurdly, rationally, irrationally powerful.
-
0:13 - 0:17Great creativity can spread tolerance, champion freedom,
-
0:17 - 0:20make education seem like a bright idea.
-
0:20 - 0:21(Laughter)
-
0:21 - 0:25Great creativity can turn a spotlight on deprivation,
-
0:25 - 0:29or show that deprivation ain't necessarily so.
-
0:29 - 0:32Great creativity can make politicians electable,
-
0:32 - 0:35or parties unelectable.
-
0:35 - 0:39It can make war seem like tragedy or farce.
-
0:39 - 0:43Creativity is the meme-maker that puts slogans on our t-shirts
-
0:43 - 0:45and phrases on our lips.
-
0:45 - 0:48It's the pathfinder that shows us a simple road
-
0:48 - 0:50through an impenetrable moral maze.
-
0:50 - 0:55Science is clever, but great creativity is something less knowable,
-
0:55 - 0:58more magical. And now we need that magic.
-
0:58 - 1:00This is a time of need.
-
1:00 - 1:02Our climate is changing quickly, too quickly.
-
1:02 - 1:05And great creativity is needed to do what it does so well:
-
1:05 - 1:09to provoke us to think differently with dramatic creative statements.
-
1:09 - 1:11To tempt us to act differently
-
1:11 - 1:14with delightful creative scraps.
-
1:14 - 1:17Here is one such scrap from an initiative I'm involved in
-
1:17 - 1:20using creativity to inspire people to be greener.
-
1:20 - 1:24(Video) Man: You know, rather than drive today, I'm going to walk.
-
1:24 - 1:28Narrator: And so he walked, and as he walked he saw things.
-
1:28 - 1:32Strange and wonderful things he would not otherwise have seen.
-
1:32 - 1:35A deer with an itchy leg. A flying motorcycle.
-
1:35 - 1:40A father and daughter separated from a bicycle by a mysterious wall.
-
1:40 - 1:45And then he stopped. Walking in front of him was her.
-
1:45 - 1:47The woman who as a child had skipped with him through fields
-
1:48 - 1:49and broken his heart.
-
1:49 - 1:51Sure, she had aged a little.
-
1:51 - 1:52In fact, she had aged a lot.
-
1:52 - 1:55But he felt all his old passion for her return.
-
1:55 - 1:58"Ford," he called softly. For that was her name.
-
1:59 - 2:01"Don't say another word, Gusty," she said,
-
2:01 - 2:02for that was his name.
-
2:02 - 2:07"I know a tent next to a caravan, exactly 300 yards from here.
-
2:07 - 2:10Let's go there and make love. In the tent."
-
2:10 - 2:14Ford undressed. She spread one leg, and then the other.
-
2:14 - 2:18Gusty entered her boldly and made love to her rhythmically
-
2:18 - 2:21while she filmed him, because she was a keen amateur pornographer.
-
2:21 - 2:23The earth moved for both of them.
-
2:23 - 2:26And they lived together happily ever after.
-
2:26 - 2:31And all because he decided to walk that day.
-
2:32 - 2:42(Applause)
-
2:42 - 2:45Andy Hobsbawm: We've got the science, we've had the debate.
-
2:45 - 2:47The moral imperative is on the table.
-
2:47 - 2:49Great creativity is needed to take it all,
-
2:49 - 2:51make it simple and sharp.
-
2:51 - 2:55To make it connect. To make it make people want to act.
-
2:55 - 2:57So this is a call, a plea,
-
2:57 - 2:59to the incredibly talented TED community.
-
2:59 - 3:01Let's get creative against climate change.
-
3:01 - 3:03And let's do it soon. Thank you.
-
3:03 - 3:04(Applause)
