What is it like to be DEAF?
-
0:10 - 0:15What is it like to be Deaf
-
0:15 - 0:17Hello everyone I want to share my experience
-
0:17 - 0:20growing up as a Deaf person
-
0:20 - 0:22Really, it has not been easy...
-
0:22 - 0:27This VLOG called "What is it like to be Deaf?"
-
0:27 - 0:32The purpose of this video is to educate
-
0:32 - 0:35and spread awareness to the hearing community.
-
0:35 - 0:42First of all, I am not here to criticize of hurt their feelings
-
0:42 - 0:47I feel the need to express so that -
-
0:47 - 0:54the hearing pearents,friends and co-workers-
-
0:54 - 0:57can understand how to deal with a Deaf person
-
0:57 - 1:04so hopefully this video will help with a better understanding
-
1:04 - 1:10as some of you already know I am adopted
-
1:10 - 1:12I thank my adopted family
-
1:12 - 1:16for everything they have done for me I really appreciate it
-
1:16 - 1:19but there was always something missing
-
1:19 - 1:24you know what I mean, like a true bond
-
1:24 - 1:30the reasons for me saying that in which you will see
-
1:30 - 1:34my personal experience that I am about to share.
-
1:34 - 1:39While I was growing up, I always loved watching TV.
-
1:39 - 1:40but in my household
-
1:40 - 1:43my family were not aware of my Deaf needs.
-
1:43 - 1:49it's not their fault I don't blame them
-
1:49 - 1:57but i wished they knew then it would save my headaches.
-
1:57 - 2:02but it's alright I had no regrets anyways
-
2:02 - 2:07for example - I was sitting with my family watching movie
-
2:07 - 2:11keep this in your mind there were no Closed Captions
-
2:11 - 2:14so of course it was difficult for me to folllow the movie
-
2:14 - 2:18I had to read people's lips on TV screen which was hard to do
-
2:18 - 2:27sometimes I had to be close to the old-fashioned speakers
-
2:27 - 2:31to try listen when I had no hearing aids
-
2:31 - 2:34and watch TV to try to figure out what was going on
-
2:34 - 2:39because I wanted to "hear" and feel the emotions of movie
-
2:39 - 2:41but unfortunately half of time I don't get it
-
2:41 - 2:47eventually I finally got new hearing aids
-
2:47 - 2:50but was still having a hard time understanding
-
2:50 - 2:53so when the movie was funny and my whole family laughed
-
2:53 - 2:57of course I was the last one to know what's up
-
2:57 - 3:00so I asked them "What did it say?"
-
3:00 - 3:03and you know what my family members said?
-
3:03 - 3:06"Put your hearing aids on"
-
3:06 - 3:08Did you just said that?!
-
3:08 - 3:15That was one of the things that lingered in the back on my mind
-
3:15 - 3:16I didn't expect that from my family
-
3:16 - 3:18so right there it made me realize
-
3:18 - 3:20is it like that out there in the real world?
-
3:20 - 3:28This came from my own family...
-
3:28 - 3:33I understand they might didn't feel like explaining at the time
-
3:33 - 3:37they could be mesmerized with the movie
-
3:37 - 3:38and didn't want to be interrupted you know
-
3:38 - 3:40but sometimes you're watching a movie and
-
3:40 - 3:42and you don't want anyone to interrupt you?
-
3:42 - 3:46Maybe they felt that way.
-
3:46 - 3:50To me, I felt something was missing.
-
3:50 - 3:54It hurts me, yeah.
-
3:54 - 3:56When I was in middle school,
-
3:56 - 4:04I went to the bus stop after school where all the kids got together
-
4:04 - 4:08to wait for our buses to go home.
-
4:08 - 4:13so when my bus arrived as I was getting in
-
4:13 - 4:18I forgot my school bag so I told my teacher aide
-
4:18 - 4:21that I forgot my school bag and I need to go get it from locker
-
4:21 - 4:23my teacher aide told me to better hurry and get it
-
4:23 - 4:28so I ran to the lockers that was right across from gym
-
4:28 - 4:32I heard bunch of basketballs bouncing
-
4:32 - 4:35of course I was curious as it led me to the gym
-
4:35 - 4:41instead of finding my bag while the bus was waiting for me
-
4:41 - 4:43as I opened the doors to go into the gym
-
4:43 - 4:49all the kids were pointing at me telling the coach "that's him!"
-
4:49 - 4:53I was like "huh?" I guess they've talked to the coach about me
-
4:53 - 4:55because they were my classmates who saw
-
4:55 - 4:59how I play basketball during gym class
-
4:59 - 5:01by playing with hearing league
-
5:01 - 5:04Coach was like "that's you?" and threw the ball at me
-
5:04 - 5:06you know what he said to me?
-
5:06 - 5:09He told me to do the lay-up and I laughed, "you serious?"
-
5:09 - 5:13'cuz that was easy to do and I did that
-
5:13 - 5:16you could tell he was impressed then
-
5:16 - 5:22he told me to try left hand lay-up and I said, "ok"
-
5:22 - 5:24when he saw that he was even more impressed
-
5:24 - 5:26he asked my why didn't I join the boys' basketball team
-
5:26 - 5:31I told him honestly I didn't know 'cuz I had no idea about this
-
5:31 - 5:34I played for hearing league and I was a day student
-
5:34 - 5:36I never knew that was going on at dorms and after school
-
5:36 - 5:42so he gave me the form for my parents to sign
-
5:42 - 5:45by end of the week so I said no problem
-
5:45 - 5:47just then my teacher aide came around
-
5:47 - 5:49and yelled at me, "What are you doing?!"
-
5:49 - 5:54luckily the coach saved my ass and said it was his fault
-
5:54 - 5:57for keeping me in the gym long so anyways
-
5:57 - 6:00I went to get my school bag and went home
-
6:00 - 6:07I gave the form to my parents not paying any mind
-
6:07 - 6:10and my parents thought it was a good idea
-
6:10 - 6:13because they know how much I love basketball
-
6:13 - 6:16I brought the signed form to the coach
-
6:16 - 6:20I warned him that I had no transportation
-
6:20 - 6:27as my family is trying their best to make ends meet
-
6:27 - 6:29the coach reassured him not to worry
-
6:29 - 6:31he will take care of it figure out what to do
-
6:31 - 6:35I should point out that I was 7th grader at the time
-
6:35 - 6:42next thing I know I was approved to stay at dorm
-
6:42 - 6:45because they want me to be on the team
-
6:45 - 6:50to save trouble for everyone involved: school & home
-
6:50 - 6:53by staying at the dorm it will help me a lot
-
6:53 - 6:57I was so excited and nervous at the same time
-
6:57 - 6:59one day after school I had bags with me ready
-
6:59 - 7:03all the kids were excited to have me on board
-
7:03 - 7:07so I followed them to where the dorm is at
-
7:07 - 7:11as soon as I got into the dorm
-
7:11 - 7:16the first thing I notice was TV with Closed Captions!
-
7:16 - 7:19You have NO Idea how I felt!
-
7:19 - 7:26I was so thrilled! I dropped my bags and went for the couch!
-
7:26 - 7:30No one was gonna bother me as I watched the TV
-
7:30 - 7:32I was so INSPIRED! I felt connected
-
7:32 - 7:35my mind was processing differently now
-
7:35 - 7:37seeing all the words and vocabularies I never saw before
-
7:37 - 7:44finally I get it and am able to feel like I belonged!
-
7:44 - 7:49All students and staff were looking at me like I was crazy
-
7:49 - 7:52they thought I didn't have a TV at home
-
7:52 - 7:55but they didn't realize I didn't have a Closed Captions
-
7:55 - 7:58I asked everyone this TV got a Closed Captions?!
-
7:58 - 8:01They said, "of course you're supposed to have one
-
8:01 - 8:03because you're Deaf! What's wrong with you?"
-
8:03 - 8:06I was like "ooh" and I saw a flashing light
-
8:06 - 8:08I asked them what is that
-
8:08 - 8:11and they said it's for when someone is ringing the door bell
-
8:11 - 8:14wow I immediately learned about everything in dorm
-
8:14 - 8:20my staff was a hearing guy and he knew how to sign
-
8:20 - 8:24my mouth dropped open and it really hit me
-
8:24 - 8:28this is where I finally felt like I belonged!
-
8:28 - 8:32This is MY culture and Deaf world!
-
8:32 - 8:38So of course I couldn't wait until Friday gets here
-
8:38 - 8:41because I stayed at the dorm during the week
-
8:41 - 8:45so when Friday came I couldn't wait to tell Mom about this
-
8:45 - 8:50so they'll know that being at dorm is perfect for me
-
8:50 - 8:53so when I got home I tried to explain to Mom
-
8:53 - 8:59about the Closed Captions on TV but she didn't get it
-
8:59 - 9:01I told her again I need Closed Captions
-
9:01 - 9:06but she didn't hear me out so I let it go
-
9:06 - 9:08I don't even bother her about it
-
9:08 - 9:11I just couldn't wait until Monday gets here
-
9:11 - 9:14So I get back to dorm and enjoy my life
-
9:14 - 9:20enjoy being me where I can actually feel
-
9:20 - 9:23the sense of belonging without feeling
-
9:23 - 9:26something is missing or felling lost
-
9:26 - 9:34I had a little sister who had a TV problem at the time
-
9:34 - 9:40Mom bought a new TV for her that I didn't know about
-
9:40 - 9:45when I got home on Friday as I was passing by
-
9:45 - 9:50to my room I was able to see my sister's room
-
9:50 - 9:55and I noticed there was a a new TV so of course I got curious
-
9:55 - 9:59because I heard any TV that was made after 1995
-
9:59 - 10:04had a built in Closed Captions as required by ADA law
-
10:04 - 10:08so I checked and there it was-Closed Captions!
-
10:08 - 10:10My TV didn't have one!
-
10:10 - 10:15Finally this is what I'm talking about and I showed Mom
-
10:15 - 10:17and she was like "and?"
-
10:17 - 10:20I told her this is what I need so can we switch the TV?
-
10:20 - 10:22She said, "no."
-
10:22 - 10:26I tried to convince her that our TVs are really the same
-
10:26 - 10:31the only differences is mine has no Closed Captions
-
10:31 - 10:31but her does therefore I'm gonna need her TV
-
10:31 - 10:33but Mom still said no so I accepted.
-
10:34 - 10:36So you know what I did?
-
10:36 - 10:38I waited until everyone was sleeping
-
10:38 - 10:46I snuck around and switched the TV without getting caught.
-
10:46 - 10:51I was so thrilled and I watched TV all night long!
-
10:51 - 10:54I learned so much by reading the captions
-
10:54 - 11:00that's why I write good and able to speak some words
-
11:00 - 11:02all that by learning from the captions
-
11:02 - 11:08it's almost like reading the dictionary without the meanings
-
11:08 - 11:10so when I see the words I don't recognize I write them down
-
11:10 - 11:13then look them up in dictionary later and learn about it
-
11:13 - 11:16I felt like my brain was popping
-
11:16 - 11:21because without Closed Captions I felt I was way behind
-
11:21 - 11:28about a month later I was in my room 3rd floor in attic
-
11:28 - 11:32still high on the excitement of not getting caught
-
11:32 - 11:34as I was watching TV the hallway light was flashing
-
11:34 - 11:38that was my mom flipping the light switch getting to get my attention
-
11:38 - 11:42as I was checking to see what she wanted
-
11:42 - 11:43Guess what she said?
-
11:43 - 11:46"You got one minute to put the damn TV back downstairs!"
-
11:46 - 11:49I was like shit. I said, "Mom" she said, "ONE MINUTE!"
-
11:49 - 11:50She left.
-
11:50 - 11:52I was trying to convince her to let me have the TV
-
11:52 - 11:59because I don't have to bother them about what's being said
-
11:59 - 12:09so what I did was I waited a while to see is she'll remeber
-
12:09 - 12:14so I waited an waited sure enough she forgot all about it
-
12:14 - 12:19I still had the TV but not anymore now
-
12:19 - 12:23but I had that TV for a long time until I went to college
-
12:23 - 12:26I even bought the TV with me!
-
12:26 - 12:30But anyways, my point is make sure you provide
-
12:30 - 12:34your Deaf child needs
-
12:34 - 12:39even though you may think it is not that important
-
12:39 - 12:42no you HAVE TO give them what they need
-
12:42 - 12:51You know TTY? Well I learned about that at Deaf school, too
-
12:51 - 12:58one time Lions Club hosted a Christmas party
-
12:58 - 13:01that I had no idea about
-
13:01 - 13:05they invited us to go
-
13:05 - 13:11and there were a lot of kids there especially children
-
13:11 - 13:15at that time I was the only Deaf person there
-
13:15 - 13:20everyone got presents and I didn't know what mine was
-
13:20 - 13:25but it was heavy and I still didn't know what it was
-
13:25 - 13:30so I opened it and it was a TTY! I was thrilled!
-
13:30 - 13:35Now I have the things I need to get by on daily basis
-
13:35 - 13:38TV with Closed Captions and now TTY
-
13:38 - 13:42I was starting to fell connected with my Deafness
-
13:42 - 13:45but then again not 100% yet
-
13:45 - 13:49so when I got home I had to wait because I didn't have
-
13:49 - 13:53my Deaf friends' phone numbers since I never called anyone
-
13:53 - 13:57so when I got to school I told everyone I got a new TTY
-
13:57 - 14:00they all looked at me like that's nothing new they all have it
-
14:00 - 14:04but I thought TTY was a new thing to have that only some had
-
14:04 - 14:09I didn't know every deaf student had one
-
14:09 - 14:13so what does that tell you? I was very behind.
-
14:13 - 14:16Anyways, they gave me their phone numbers
-
14:16 - 14:18and I waited until I got home on Friday
-
14:18 - 14:23then during the weekend I'd call them and chat
-
14:23 - 14:25I learned how to use TTY
-
14:25 - 14:28there were times when I was out and about
-
14:28 - 14:33or even when I'm in the house doing stuff
-
14:33 - 14:37so when I get to school my friends be like
-
14:37 - 14:42"you just got TTY and you didn't even pick up the phone"
-
14:42 - 14:45I was puzzled 'cuz I had no idea they tried to call me
-
14:45 - 14:47they kept saying you're not home you're not there
-
14:47 - 14:58wow I was home and no one ever pass along the message
-
14:58 - 15:01that they called for me
-
15:01 - 15:08I felt like why didn't anyone communicate with me
-
15:08 - 15:11I was like ok fine I'll wait until I get home to get bottom of this
-
15:11 - 15:13I asked them did anyone called for me
-
15:13 - 15:14they were like, "ohhh yeah yeah they did"
-
15:14 - 15:19I was like (hiding disappointment) "okay"
-
15:19 - 15:24It hurts, yeah, it hurts.
-
15:24 - 15:31That's why being Deaf is really tough to live with
-
15:31 - 15:36you have to depend on others to inform you about anything
-
15:36 - 15:41even about those you didn't know about
-
15:41 - 15:44it would be nice if you helped me live
-
15:44 - 15:48the same way you live in a hearing world
-
15:48 - 15:54Another example when my family were talking in living room
-
15:54 - 15:59and I happen to pass them by to the kitchen
-
15:59 - 16:04as soon as I walk by them they would cover their mouths
-
16:04 - 16:11you could feel the weird vibe in that room
-
16:11 - 16:13(whispering)
-
16:13 - 16:18so of course I automatically I knew they were talking about me
-
16:18 - 16:24they don’t realize that it is so offensive
-
16:24 - 16:29very offensive when they do something like that
-
16:29 - 16:32so the message to hearing people out there
-
16:32 - 16:39do not try to hide your mouth when talking to someone else
-
16:39 - 16:40whenever a Deaf person is around
-
16:40 - 16:42even though you’re not talking about them
-
16:42 - 16:44it’s about RESPECT
-
16:44 - 16:49let’s say if I was hearing I’ll be able to hear what you’re saying
-
16:49 - 16:53even if you’re not talking about me but about something else
-
16:53 - 16:55would you still cover your mouth?
-
16:55 - 16:57You understand what I mean?
-
16:57 - 17:02It is important to make sure you welcome any Deaf person
-
17:02 - 17:04and be part of the conversation.
-
17:04 - 17:09Another thing that has happened in which
-
17:09 - 17:12I remembered everything like it was yesterday
-
17:12 - 17:16during my junior or senior year I dated an ex-girlfriend
-
17:16 - 17:18who was hearing and very beautiful
-
17:18 - 17:20anyways that’s beside the point but
-
17:20 - 17:25every Friday really every Thursday night
-
17:25 - 17:28I would sleep over at her apartment
-
17:28 - 17:31‘cuz I had a basketball practice every Friday at 6am
-
17:31 - 17:33At New Jersey School for the Deaf
-
17:33 - 17:36I know some of y’all be like “6am?!” but yeah
-
17:36 - 17:38she would drop me off every Friday morning to gym
-
17:38 - 17:43but anyways when I got to her place that Thursday night
-
17:43 - 17:46I saw her friend on the couch watching movie
-
17:46 - 17:48with my ex-girlfriend who was sitting with her
-
17:48 - 17:50her friend and I greeted each other
-
17:50 - 17:54I made myself comfortable eating, drinking and watching TV
-
17:54 - 17:57My ex-girlfriend always leave her phone nearby on the floor
-
17:57 - 17:59so when it rings she’ll answer right there
-
17:59 - 18:04I was never the type of person to inquire who’s calling
-
18:04 - 18:08I trusted her
-
18:08 - 18:15I don’t spy or check on her
-
18:15 - 18:17maybe I was naïve at the time
-
18:17 - 18:20I didn’t know so much about relationships
-
18:20 - 18:26anyways, she answered her phone as usual
-
18:26 - 18:29still sitting next to me unsuspiciously
-
18:29 - 18:34but the question is who was she talking to? I had no idea who
-
18:34 - 18:40she got up abruptly and went to the kitchen with her phone
-
18:40 - 18:45but I thought nothing of it and she stayed there for a while
-
18:45 - 18:53I actually thought she was cooking or washing the dishes
-
18:53 - 18:59Her friend tapped my arm and told me to check on her
-
18:59 - 19:01I asked her why
-
19:01 - 19:05she said my girl was talking to someone else behind my back
-
19:05 - 19:07and that I was clueless because I couldn’t hear
-
19:07 - 19:12I muttered under my breath “ok fine thanks”
-
19:12 - 19:16as soon as I walked into the kitchen and when she saw me
-
19:16 - 19:20she opened the refrigerator freezer door to cover her face
-
19:20 - 19:23so I wouldn’t see her mouth movement what she was saying
-
19:23 - 19:28obviously something was up, right?
-
19:28 - 19:31so what I did was swung the freezer door
-
19:31 - 19:37and told her to tell her boyfriend that he can have her
-
19:37 - 19:46and as I was leaving I told her friend, “thank you” and left.
-
19:46 - 19:51my ex came running desperately tried to plead her case
-
19:51 - 19:54but Silence is the Loudest Sound
-
19:54 - 19:56since I found out the truth
-
19:56 - 20:01it hurts me ‘cuz I was with her for a long time
-
20:01 - 20:04I wondered how long have they been talking to each other
-
20:04 - 20:09and what have they been doing behind my back?
-
20:09 - 20:15That really hurt me a lot ‘cuz I got played
-
20:15 - 20:19even though I was and always has been a good man
-
20:19 - 20:22I don’t have to go further on how a good man I am
-
20:22 - 20:25but I deserved better
-
20:25 - 20:28not everyone are meant for each other
-
20:28 - 20:33or it’s just that some hearing people are ignorant
-
20:33 - 20:35but it’s not their fault
-
20:35 - 20:40since they were never educated about Deaf culture
-
20:40 - 20:44she learned her lesson at the time
-
20:44 - 20:47and guess what? We remained friends
-
20:47 - 20:49she realized it’s all part of growing up
-
20:49 - 20:54we can’t stay angry and bitter if they did something wrong
-
20:54 - 20:56it’s our responsibility to educate hearing people
-
20:56 - 20:59as long they really want to learn about us
-
20:59 - 21:03that’s wonderful attitude for us
-
21:03 - 21:06I know many Deaf people are frustrated
-
21:06 - 21:08and going against hearing people
-
21:08 - 21:10but we can’t do that
-
21:10 - 21:16we have to reach out to them and vice versa.
-
21:16 - 21:20I make friends easily with hearing guys
-
21:20 - 21:23from playing basketball together, of course, definitely
-
21:23 - 21:26but some guys don’t realize that I’m Deaf
-
21:26 - 21:29sometimes my Deaf friends came to park and join us
-
21:29 - 21:33my friends were new to them when they saw us signing
-
21:33 - 21:41‘cuz I rarely had any Dear friends over when I was younger
-
21:41 - 21:47there were times when hearing guys were weirded out by us
-
21:47 - 21:54and tried to be funny by making fun of us
-
21:57 - 22:02Guess what I did? I fought with them.
-
22:02 - 22:04I demand RESPECT.
-
22:04 - 22:08That’s my language and my culture.
-
22:08 - 22:14I want you all hearing people to understand
-
22:14 - 22:17that’s very offensive when you do that.
-
22:17 - 22:19Here’s another similar example
-
22:19 - 22:22at my old job Bruce Street School for the Deaf
-
22:22 - 22:25You know what that is at? It’s in Newark
-
22:25 - 22:27I miss working there it’s a great school
-
22:27 - 22:32Mainstream program school with hearing inner-city kids
-
22:32 - 22:37that day there was a special assembly with a clown
-
22:37 - 22:41Deaf students sat in the front row
-
22:41 - 22:42While all hearing students sat in the rows behind
-
22:42 - 22:44and the interpreter stood nearby the stage
-
22:44 - 22:46interpreting what the clown was saying
-
22:46 - 22:51but guess what? When the clown saw the interpreter
-
22:51 - 22:56he thought it was funny and made fun of signing
-
23:00 - 23:03deaf kids were shocked as they looked on
-
23:03 - 23:08some hearing kids laughed while others were disappointed
-
23:08 - 23:13very shocked and none of deaf kids laughed
-
23:13 - 23:18Know what I did? I shouted, “Hey, what you think you doing?”
-
23:18 - 23:21the clown was bewildered
-
23:21 - 23:26we could tell that he didn’t really mean it but wow
-
23:26 - 23:29this has happened in school!
-
23:29 - 23:31I don’t know what happened afterward
-
23:31 - 23:35I’m sure the principal and staff reprimanded him
-
23:35 - 23:39not to do that again next time ‘cuz that’s our language
-
23:39 - 23:41the interpreter is there to interpret what you’re saying
-
23:41 - 23:43so that we can understand what you said
-
23:43 - 23:45if it wasn’t for the interpreter
-
23:45 - 23:48we would not be able to laugh at your jokes
-
23:48 - 23:51that we would make you think you’re doing a lousy job
-
23:51 - 23:54‘cuz you probably wondering why Deaf people not laughing
-
23:54 - 23:56that’s because you don’t have an interpreter
-
23:56 - 24:00so for you to make fun of interpreter is uncalled for
-
24:00 - 24:03Don’t do that.
-
24:03 - 24:07Anyways, I think I’ve shared enough stories
-
24:07 - 24:11Really I have some more to share but I’m gonna save for later
-
24:11 - 24:15and give y’all an opportunity to share your stories
-
24:15 - 24:20so that hearing people can see what we had to go through
-
24:20 - 24:22to at least have a better understanding
-
24:22 - 24:25as I mentioned earlier we are not here to criticize anyone
-
24:25 - 24:28we have to help them that’s our responsibility
-
24:28 - 24:32to educate them what we are about
-
24:32 - 24:38and why it is important for both of us to be on the same page
-
24:41 - 24:47I know the issue of “what is it like to be Deaf?” is sensitive
-
24:47 - 24:54So please listen to your Deaf child
-
24:54 - 24:59Whatever they need for their deafness – give it to them
-
24:59 - 25:03Especially when you have a new born baby
-
25:03 - 25:08teach him/her sign language right away
-
25:08 - 25:15y’all don’t have to be Deaf to learn sign language
-
25:15 - 25:19‘cuz they’ll grow with the richness of both worlds
-
25:19 - 25:23as soon as the baby is born it will learn sign language so quickly
-
25:23 - 25:27if you think teaching them sign language is insignificant
-
25:27 - 25:30you got that wrong.
