What is it like to be DEAF?

  • 0:10 - 0:15
What is it like to be Deaf
  • 0:15 - 0:17
Hello everyone I want to share my experience
  • 0:17 - 0:20
growing up as a Deaf person
  • 0:20 - 0:22
Really, it has not been easy...
  • 0:22 - 0:27
This VLOG called "What is it like to be Deaf?"
  • 0:27 - 0:32
The purpose of this video is to educate
  • 0:32 - 0:35
and spread awareness to the hearing community.
  • 0:35 - 0:42
First of all, I am not here to criticize of hurt their feelings
  • 0:42 - 0:47
I feel the need to express so that -
  • 0:47 - 0:54
    the hearing pearents,friends and co-workers-
  • 0:54 - 0:57
can understand how to deal with a Deaf person
  • 0:57 - 1:04
so hopefully this video will help with a better understanding
  • 1:04 - 1:10
as some of you already know I am adopted
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    I thank my adopted family
  • 1:12 - 1:16
for everything they have done for me I really appreciate it
  • 1:16 - 1:19
but there was always something missing
  • 1:19 - 1:24
you know what I mean, like a true bond
  • 1:24 - 1:30
the reasons for me saying that in which you will see
  • 1:30 - 1:34
my personal experience that I am about to share.
  • 1:34 - 1:39
While I was growing up, I always loved watching TV.
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    but in my household
  • 1:40 - 1:43
my family were not aware of my Deaf needs.
  • 1:43 - 1:49
it's not their fault I don't blame them
  • 1:49 - 1:57
but i wished they knew then it would save my headaches.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
but it's alright I had no regrets anyways
  • 2:02 - 2:07
for example - I was sitting with my family watching movie
  • 2:07 - 2:11
keep this in your mind there were no Closed Captions
  • 2:11 - 2:14
so of course it was difficult for me to folllow the movie
  • 2:14 - 2:18
I had to read people's lips on TV screen which was hard to do
  • 2:18 - 2:27
sometimes I had to be close to the old-fashioned speakers
  • 2:27 - 2:31
to try listen when I had no hearing aids
  • 2:31 - 2:34
and watch TV to try to figure out what was going on
  • 2:34 - 2:39
because I wanted to "hear" and feel the emotions of movie
  • 2:39 - 2:41
but unfortunately half of time I don't get it
  • 2:41 - 2:47
eventually I finally got new hearing aids
  • 2:47 - 2:50
but was still having a hard time understanding
  • 2:50 - 2:53
so when the movie was funny and my whole family laughed
  • 2:53 - 2:57
of course I was the last one to know what's up
  • 2:57 - 3:00
so I asked them "What did it say?"
  • 3:00 - 3:03
and you know what my family members said?
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    "Put your hearing aids on"
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    Did you just said that?!
  • 3:08 - 3:15
That was one of the things that lingered in the back on my mind
  • 3:15 - 3:16
I didn't expect that from my family
  • 3:16 - 3:18
so right there it made me realize
  • 3:18 - 3:20
is it like that out there in the real world?
  • 3:20 - 3:28
This came from my own family...
  • 3:28 - 3:33
I understand they might didn't feel like explaining at the time
  • 3:33 - 3:37
they could be mesmerized with the movie
  • 3:37 - 3:38
and didn't want to be interrupted you know
  • 3:38 - 3:40
but sometimes you're watching a movie and
  • 3:40 - 3:42
and you don't want anyone to interrupt you?
  • 3:42 - 3:46
    Maybe they felt that way.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
To me, I felt something was missing.
  • 3:50 - 3:54
    It hurts me, yeah.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
When I was in middle school,
  • 3:56 - 4:04
I went to the bus stop after school where all the kids got together
  • 4:04 - 4:08
to wait for our buses to go home.
  • 4:08 - 4:13
so when my bus arrived as I was getting in
  • 4:13 - 4:18
I forgot my school bag so I told my teacher aide
  • 4:18 - 4:21
that I forgot my school bag and I need to go get it from locker
  • 4:21 - 4:23
my teacher aide told me to better hurry and get it
  • 4:23 - 4:28
so I ran to the lockers that was right across from gym
  • 4:28 - 4:32
I heard bunch of basketballs bouncing
  • 4:32 - 4:35
of course I was curious as it led me to the gym
  • 4:35 - 4:41
instead of finding my bag while the bus was waiting for me
  • 4:41 - 4:43
as I opened the doors to go into the gym
  • 4:43 - 4:49
all the kids were pointing at me telling the coach "that's him!"
  • 4:49 - 4:53
I was like "huh?" I guess they've talked to the coach about me
  • 4:53 - 4:55
because they were my classmates who saw
  • 4:55 - 4:59
how I play basketball during gym class
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    by playing with hearing league
  • 5:01 - 5:04
Coach was like "that's you?" and threw the ball at me
  • 5:04 - 5:06
you know what he said to me?
  • 5:06 - 5:09
He told me to do the lay-up and I laughed, "you serious?"
  • 5:09 - 5:13
'cuz that was easy to do and I did that
  • 5:13 - 5:16
you could tell he was impressed then
  • 5:16 - 5:22
he told me to try left hand lay-up and I said, "ok"
  • 5:22 - 5:24
when he saw that he was even more impressed
  • 5:24 - 5:26
he asked my why didn't I join the boys' basketball team
  • 5:26 - 5:31
I told him honestly I didn't know 'cuz I had no idea about this
  • 5:31 - 5:34
I played for hearing league and I was a day student
  • 5:34 - 5:36
I never knew that was going on at dorms and after school
  • 5:36 - 5:42
so he gave me the form for my parents to sign
  • 5:42 - 5:45
by end of the week so I said no problem
  • 5:45 - 5:47
just then my teacher aide came around
  • 5:47 - 5:49
and yelled at me, "What are you doing?!"
  • 5:49 - 5:54
luckily the coach saved my ass and said it was his fault
  • 5:54 - 5:57
for keeping me in the gym long so anyways
  • 5:57 - 6:00
I went to get my school bag and went home
  • 6:00 - 6:07
I gave the form to my parents not paying any mind
  • 6:07 - 6:10
and my parents thought it was a good idea
  • 6:10 - 6:13
because they know how much I love basketball
  • 6:13 - 6:16
I brought the signed form to the coach
  • 6:16 - 6:20
I warned him that I had no transportation
  • 6:20 - 6:27
as my family is trying their best to make ends meet
  • 6:27 - 6:29
the coach reassured him not to worry
  • 6:29 - 6:31
he will take care of it figure out what to do
  • 6:31 - 6:35
I should point out that I was 7th grader at the time
  • 6:35 - 6:42
next thing I know I was approved to stay at dorm
  • 6:42 - 6:45
because they want me to be on the team
  • 6:45 - 6:50
to save trouble for everyone involved: school & home
  • 6:50 - 6:53
by staying at the dorm it will help me a lot
  • 6:53 - 6:57
I was so excited and nervous at the same time
  • 6:57 - 6:59
one day after school I had bags with me ready
  • 6:59 - 7:03
all the kids were excited to have me on board
  • 7:03 - 7:07
so I followed them to where the dorm is at
  • 7:07 - 7:11
as soon as I got into the dorm
  • 7:11 - 7:16
the first thing I notice was TV with Closed Captions!
  • 7:16 - 7:19
You have NO Idea how I felt!
  • 7:19 - 7:26
I was so thrilled! I dropped my bags and went for the couch!
  • 7:26 - 7:30
No one was gonna bother me as I watched the TV
  • 7:30 - 7:32
I was so INSPIRED! I felt connected
  • 7:32 - 7:35
my mind was processing differently now
  • 7:35 - 7:37
seeing all the words and vocabularies I never saw before
  • 7:37 - 7:44
finally I get it and am able to feel like I belonged!
  • 7:44 - 7:49
All students and staff were looking at me like I was crazy
  • 7:49 - 7:52
they thought I didn't have a TV at home
  • 7:52 - 7:55
but they didn't realize I didn't have a Closed Captions
  • 7:55 - 7:58
I asked everyone this TV got a Closed Captions?!
  • 7:58 - 8:01
They said, "of course you're supposed to have one
  • 8:01 - 8:03
because you're Deaf! What's wrong with you?"
  • 8:03 - 8:06
I was like "ooh" and I saw a flashing light
  • 8:06 - 8:08
I asked them what is that
  • 8:08 - 8:11
and they said it's for when someone is ringing the door bell
  • 8:11 - 8:14
wow I immediately learned about everything in dorm
  • 8:14 - 8:20
my staff was a hearing guy and he knew how to sign
  • 8:20 - 8:24
my mouth dropped open and it really hit me
  • 8:24 - 8:28
this is where I finally felt like I belonged!
  • 8:28 - 8:32
This is MY culture and Deaf world!
  • 8:32 - 8:38
So of course I couldn't wait until Friday gets here
  • 8:38 - 8:41
because I stayed at the dorm during the week
  • 8:41 - 8:45
so when Friday came I couldn't wait to tell Mom about this
  • 8:45 - 8:50
so they'll know that being at dorm is perfect for me
  • 8:50 - 8:53
so when I got home I tried to explain to Mom
  • 8:53 - 8:59
about the Closed Captions on TV but she didn't get it
  • 8:59 - 9:01
I told her again I need Closed Captions
  • 9:01 - 9:06
but she didn't hear me out so I let it go
  • 9:06 - 9:08
I don't even bother her about it
  • 9:08 - 9:11
I just couldn't wait until Monday gets here
  • 9:11 - 9:14
So I get back to dorm and enjoy my life
  • 9:14 - 9:20
enjoy being me where I can actually feel
  • 9:20 - 9:23
the sense of belonging without feeling
  • 9:23 - 9:26
something is missing or felling lost
  • 9:26 - 9:34
I had a little sister who had a TV problem at the time
  • 9:34 - 9:40
Mom bought a new TV for her that I didn't know about
  • 9:40 - 9:45
when I got home on Friday as I was passing by
  • 9:45 - 9:50
to my room I was able to see my sister's room
  • 9:50 - 9:55
and I noticed there was a a new TV so of course I got curious
  • 9:55 - 9:59
because I heard any TV that was made after 1995
  • 9:59 - 10:04
had a built in Closed Captions as required by ADA law
  • 10:04 - 10:08
so I checked and there it was-Closed Captions!
  • 10:08 - 10:10
    My TV didn't have one!
  • 10:10 - 10:15
Finally this is what I'm talking about and I showed Mom
  • 10:15 - 10:17
    and she was like "and?"
  • 10:17 - 10:20
I told her this is what I need so can we switch the TV?
  • 10:20 - 10:22
    She said, "no."
  • 10:22 - 10:26
I tried to convince her that our TVs are really the same
  • 10:26 - 10:31
the only differences is mine has no Closed Captions
  • 10:31 - 10:31
but her does therefore I'm gonna need her TV
  • 10:31 - 10:33
but Mom still said no so I accepted.
  • 10:34 - 10:36
So you know what I did?
  • 10:36 - 10:38
I waited until everyone was sleeping
  • 10:38 - 10:46
I snuck around and switched the TV without getting caught.
  • 10:46 - 10:51
I was so thrilled and I watched TV all night long!
  • 10:51 - 10:54
I learned so much by reading the captions
  • 10:54 - 11:00
that's why I write good and able to speak some words
  • 11:00 - 11:02
all that by learning from the captions
  • 11:02 - 11:08
it's almost like reading the dictionary without the meanings
  • 11:08 - 11:10
so when I see the words I don't recognize I write them down
  • 11:10 - 11:13
then look them up in dictionary later and learn about it
  • 11:13 - 11:16
I felt like my brain was popping
  • 11:16 - 11:21
because without Closed Captions I felt I was way behind
  • 11:21 - 11:28
about a month later I was in my room 3rd floor in attic
  • 11:28 - 11:32
still high on the excitement of not getting caught
  • 11:32 - 11:34
as I was watching TV the hallway light was flashing
  • 11:34 - 11:38
that was my mom flipping the light switch getting to get my attention
  • 11:38 - 11:42
as I was checking to see what she wanted
  • 11:42 - 11:43
    Guess what she said?
  • 11:43 - 11:46
"You got one minute to put the damn TV back downstairs!"
  • 11:46 - 11:49
I was like shit. I said, "Mom" she said, "ONE MINUTE!"
  • 11:49 - 11:50
    She left.
  • 11:50 - 11:52
I was trying to convince her to let me have the TV
  • 11:52 - 11:59
because I don't have to bother them about what's being said
  • 11:59 - 12:09
so what I did was I waited a while to see is she'll remeber
  • 12:09 - 12:14
so I waited an waited sure enough she forgot all about it
  • 12:14 - 12:19
I still had the TV but not anymore now
  • 12:19 - 12:23
but I had that TV for a long time until I went to college
  • 12:23 - 12:26
I even bought the TV with me!
  • 12:26 - 12:30
But anyways, my point is make sure you provide
  • 12:30 - 12:34
    your Deaf child needs
  • 12:34 - 12:39
even though you may think it is not that important
  • 12:39 - 12:42
no you HAVE TO give them what they need
  • 12:42 - 12:51
You know TTY? Well I learned about that at Deaf school, too
  • 12:51 - 12:58
one time Lions Club hosted a Christmas party
  • 12:58 - 13:01
that I had no idea about
  • 13:01 - 13:05
    they invited us to go
  • 13:05 - 13:11
and there were a lot of kids there especially children
  • 13:11 - 13:15
at that time I was the only Deaf person there
  • 13:15 - 13:20
everyone got presents and I didn't know what mine was
  • 13:20 - 13:25
but it was heavy and I still didn't know what it was
  • 13:25 - 13:30
so I opened it and it was a TTY! I was thrilled!
  • 13:30 - 13:35
Now I have the things I need to get by on daily basis
  • 13:35 - 13:38
TV with Closed Captions and now TTY
  • 13:38 - 13:42
I was starting to fell connected with my Deafness
  • 13:42 - 13:45
but then again not 100% yet
  • 13:45 - 13:49
so when I got home I had to wait because I didn't have
  • 13:49 - 13:53
my Deaf friends' phone numbers since I never called anyone
  • 13:53 - 13:57
so when I got to school I told everyone I got a new TTY
  • 13:57 - 14:00
they all looked at me like that's nothing new they all have it
  • 14:00 - 14:04
but I thought TTY was a new thing to have that only some had
  • 14:04 - 14:09
I didn't know every deaf student had one
  • 14:09 - 14:13
so what does that tell you? I was very behind.
  • 14:13 - 14:16
Anyways, they gave me their phone numbers
  • 14:16 - 14:18
and I waited until I got home on Friday
  • 14:18 - 14:23
then during the weekend I'd call them and chat
  • 14:23 - 14:25
I learned how to use TTY
  • 14:25 - 14:28
there were times when I was out and about
  • 14:28 - 14:33
or even when I'm in the house doing stuff
  • 14:33 - 14:37
so when I get to school my friends be like
  • 14:37 - 14:42
"you just got TTY and you didn't even pick up the phone"
  • 14:42 - 14:45
I was puzzled 'cuz I had no idea they tried to call me
  • 14:45 - 14:47
they kept saying you're not home you're not there
  • 14:47 - 14:58
wow I was home and no one ever pass along the message
  • 14:58 - 15:01
    that they called for me
  • 15:01 - 15:08
I felt like why didn't anyone communicate with me
  • 15:08 - 15:11
I was like ok fine I'll wait until I get home to get bottom of this
  • 15:11 - 15:13
I asked them did anyone called for me
  • 15:13 - 15:14
they were like, "ohhh yeah yeah they did"
  • 15:14 - 15:19
I was like (hiding disappointment) "okay"
  • 15:19 - 15:24
    It hurts, yeah, it hurts.
  • 15:24 - 15:31
That's why being Deaf is really tough to live with
  • 15:31 - 15:36
you have to depend on others to inform you about anything
  • 15:36 - 15:41
even about those you didn't know about
  • 15:41 - 15:44
it would be nice if you helped me live
  • 15:44 - 15:48
the same way you live in a hearing world
  • 15:48 - 15:54
Another example when my family were talking in living room
  • 15:54 - 15:59
and I happen to pass them by to the kitchen
  • 15:59 - 16:04
as soon as I walk by them they would cover their mouths
  • 16:04 - 16:11
you could feel the weird vibe in that room
  • 16:11 - 16:13
    (whispering)
  • 16:13 - 16:18
so of course I automatically I knew they were talking about me
  • 16:18 - 16:24
they don’t realize that it is so offensive
  • 16:24 - 16:29
very offensive when they do something like that
  • 16:29 - 16:32
so the message to hearing people out there
  • 16:32 - 16:39
do not try to hide your mouth when talking to someone else
  • 16:39 - 16:40
whenever a Deaf person is around
  • 16:40 - 16:42
even though you’re not talking about them
  • 16:42 - 16:44
    it’s about RESPECT
  • 16:44 - 16:49
let’s say if I was hearing I’ll be able to hear what you’re saying
  • 16:49 - 16:53
even if you’re not talking about me but about something else
  • 16:53 - 16:55
would you still cover your mouth?
  • 16:55 - 16:57
    You understand what I mean?
  • 16:57 - 17:02
It is important to make sure you welcome any Deaf person
  • 17:02 - 17:04
and be part of the conversation.
  • 17:04 - 17:09
Another thing that has happened in which
  • 17:09 - 17:12
I remembered everything like it was yesterday
  • 17:12 - 17:16
during my junior or senior year I dated an ex-girlfriend
  • 17:16 - 17:18
who was hearing and very beautiful
  • 17:18 - 17:20
anyways that’s beside the point but
  • 17:20 - 17:25
every Friday really every Thursday night
  • 17:25 - 17:28
I would sleep over at her apartment
  • 17:28 - 17:31
‘cuz I had a basketball practice every Friday at 6am
  • 17:31 - 17:33
At New Jersey School for the Deaf
  • 17:33 - 17:36
I know some of y’all be like “6am?!” but yeah
  • 17:36 - 17:38
she would drop me off every Friday morning to gym
  • 17:38 - 17:43
but anyways when I got to her place that Thursday night
  • 17:43 - 17:46
I saw her friend on the couch watching movie
  • 17:46 - 17:48
with my ex-girlfriend who was sitting with her
  • 17:48 - 17:50
her friend and I greeted each other
  • 17:50 - 17:54
I made myself comfortable eating, drinking and watching TV
  • 17:54 - 17:57
My ex-girlfriend always leave her phone nearby on the floor
  • 17:57 - 17:59
so when it rings she’ll answer right there
  • 17:59 - 18:04
I was never the type of person to inquire who’s calling
  • 18:04 - 18:08
    I trusted her
  • 18:08 - 18:15
I don’t spy or check on her
  • 18:15 - 18:17
maybe I was naïve at the time
  • 18:17 - 18:20
I didn’t know so much about relationships
  • 18:20 - 18:26
anyways, she answered her phone as usual
  • 18:26 - 18:29
still sitting next to me unsuspiciously
  • 18:29 - 18:34
but the question is who was she talking to? I had no idea who
  • 18:34 - 18:40
she got up abruptly and went to the kitchen with her phone
  • 18:40 - 18:45
but I thought nothing of it and she stayed there for a while
  • 18:45 - 18:53
I actually thought she was cooking or washing the dishes
  • 18:53 - 18:59
Her friend tapped my arm and told me to check on her
  • 18:59 - 19:01
    I asked her why
  • 19:01 - 19:05
she said my girl was talking to someone else behind my back
  • 19:05 - 19:07
and that I was clueless because I couldn’t hear
  • 19:07 - 19:12
I muttered under my breath “ok fine thanks”
  • 19:12 - 19:16
as soon as I walked into the kitchen and when she saw me
  • 19:16 - 19:20
she opened the refrigerator freezer door to cover her face
  • 19:20 - 19:23
so I wouldn’t see her mouth movement what she was saying
  • 19:23 - 19:28
    obviously something was up, right?
  • 19:28 - 19:31
so what I did was swung the freezer door
  • 19:31 - 19:37
and told her to tell her boyfriend that he can have her
  • 19:37 - 19:46
and as I was leaving I told her friend, “thank you” and left.
  • 19:46 - 19:51
my ex came running desperately tried to plead her case
  • 19:51 - 19:54
but Silence is the Loudest Sound
  • 19:54 - 19:56
since I found out the truth
  • 19:56 - 20:01
it hurts me ‘cuz I was with her for a long time
  • 20:01 - 20:04
I wondered how long have they been talking to each other
  • 20:04 - 20:09
and what have they been doing behind my back?
  • 20:09 - 20:15
That really hurt me a lot ‘cuz I got played
  • 20:15 - 20:19
even though I was and always has been a good man
  • 20:19 - 20:22
I don’t have to go further on how a good man I am
  • 20:22 - 20:25
    but I deserved better
  • 20:25 - 20:28
not everyone are meant for each other
  • 20:28 - 20:33
or it’s just that some hearing people are ignorant
  • 20:33 - 20:35
    but it’s not their fault
  • 20:35 - 20:40
since they were never educated about Deaf culture
  • 20:40 - 20:44
she learned her lesson at the time
  • 20:44 - 20:47
and guess what? We remained friends
  • 20:47 - 20:49
she realized it’s all part of growing up
  • 20:49 - 20:54
we can’t stay angry and bitter if they did something wrong
  • 20:54 - 20:56
it’s our responsibility to educate hearing people
  • 20:56 - 20:59
as long they really want to learn about us
  • 20:59 - 21:03
    that’s wonderful attitude for us
  • 21:03 - 21:06
I know many Deaf people are frustrated
  • 21:06 - 21:08
    and going against hearing people
  • 21:08 - 21:10
    but we can’t do that
  • 21:10 - 21:16
we have to reach out to them and vice versa.
  • 21:16 - 21:20
I make friends easily with hearing guys
  • 21:20 - 21:23
from playing basketball together, of course, definitely
  • 21:23 - 21:26
but some guys don’t realize that I’m Deaf
  • 21:26 - 21:29
sometimes my Deaf friends came to park and join us
  • 21:29 - 21:33
my friends were new to them when they saw us signing
  • 21:33 - 21:41
‘cuz I rarely had any Dear friends over when I was younger
  • 21:41 - 21:47
there were times when hearing guys were weirded out by us
  • 21:47 - 21:54
and tried to be funny by making fun of us
  • 21:57 - 22:02
Guess what I did? I fought with them.
  • 22:02 - 22:04
    I demand RESPECT.
  • 22:04 - 22:08
That’s my language and my culture.
  • 22:08 - 22:14
I want you all hearing people to understand
  • 22:14 - 22:17
that’s very offensive when you do that.
  • 22:17 - 22:19
    Here’s another similar example
  • 22:19 - 22:22
at my old job Bruce Street School for the Deaf
  • 22:22 - 22:25
You know what that is at? It’s in Newark
  • 22:25 - 22:27
I miss working there it’s a great school
  • 22:27 - 22:32
Mainstream program school with hearing inner-city kids
  • 22:32 - 22:37
that day there was a special assembly with a clown
  • 22:37 - 22:41
Deaf students sat in the front row
  • 22:41 - 22:42
While all hearing students sat in the rows behind
  • 22:42 - 22:44
and the interpreter stood nearby the stage
  • 22:44 - 22:46
interpreting what the clown was saying
  • 22:46 - 22:51
but guess what? When the clown saw the interpreter
  • 22:51 - 22:56
he thought it was funny and made fun of signing
  • 23:00 - 23:03
deaf kids were shocked as they looked on
  • 23:03 - 23:08
some hearing kids laughed while others were disappointed
  • 23:08 - 23:13
very shocked and none of deaf kids laughed
  • 23:13 - 23:18
Know what I did? I shouted, “Hey, what you think you doing?”
  • 23:18 - 23:21
    the clown was bewildered
  • 23:21 - 23:26
we could tell that he didn’t really mean it but wow
  • 23:26 - 23:29
    this has happened in school!
  • 23:29 - 23:31
I don’t know what happened afterward
  • 23:31 - 23:35
I’m sure the principal and staff reprimanded him
  • 23:35 - 23:39
not to do that again next time ‘cuz that’s our language
  • 23:39 - 23:41
the interpreter is there to interpret what you’re saying
  • 23:41 - 23:43
so that we can understand what you said
  • 23:43 - 23:45
if it wasn’t for the interpreter
  • 23:45 - 23:48
we would not be able to laugh at your jokes
  • 23:48 - 23:51
that we would make you think you’re doing a lousy job
  • 23:51 - 23:54
‘cuz you probably wondering why Deaf people not laughing
  • 23:54 - 23:56
that’s because you don’t have an interpreter
  • 23:56 - 24:00
so for you to make fun of interpreter is uncalled for
  • 24:00 - 24:03
    Don’t do that.
  • 24:03 - 24:07
Anyways, I think I’ve shared enough stories
  • 24:07 - 24:11
Really I have some more to share but I’m gonna save for later
  • 24:11 - 24:15
and give y’all an opportunity to share your stories
  • 24:15 - 24:20
so that hearing people can see what we had to go through
  • 24:20 - 24:22
to at least have a better understanding
  • 24:22 - 24:25
as I mentioned earlier we are not here to criticize anyone
  • 24:25 - 24:28
we have to help them that’s our responsibility
  • 24:28 - 24:32
to educate them what we are about
  • 24:32 - 24:38
and why it is important for both of us to be on the same page
  • 24:41 - 24:47
I know the issue of “what is it like to be Deaf?” is sensitive
  • 24:47 - 24:54
So please listen to your Deaf child
  • 24:54 - 24:59
Whatever they need for their deafness – give it to them
  • 24:59 - 25:03
Especially when you have a new born baby
  • 25:03 - 25:08
teach him/her sign language right away
  • 25:08 - 25:15
y’all don’t have to be Deaf to learn sign language
  • 25:15 - 25:19
‘cuz they’ll grow with the richness of both worlds
  • 25:19 - 25:23
as soon as the baby is born it will learn sign language so quickly
  • 25:23 - 25:27
if you think teaching them sign language is insignificant
  • 25:27 - 25:30
    you got that wrong.
  • 25:30 - 25:34
I love you all one deaf luv thanks for watching us
  • 25:34 - 25:39
Part 2 of “what is it like to be Deaf?” VLOG coming soon
