The loathsome, lethal mosquito - Rose Eveleth
-
0:07 - 0:09What's the worst bug on the planet?
-
0:09 - 0:11You might vote for the horsefly
-
0:11 - 0:12or perhaps the wasp,
-
0:12 - 0:13but for many people,
-
0:13 - 0:16the worst offender is by far the mosquito.
-
0:16 - 0:17The buzzing,
-
0:17 - 0:18the biting,
-
0:18 - 0:19the itching,
-
0:19 - 0:21the mosquito is one of the most commonly detested
-
0:21 - 0:23pests in the world.
-
0:23 - 0:25In Alaska, swarms of mosquitoes can get so thick
-
0:25 - 0:27that they actually asphyxiate caribou.
-
0:27 - 0:29And mosquito-borne diseases kill
-
0:29 - 0:31millions of people every year.
-
0:31 - 0:34The scourge that is the mosquito isn't new.
-
0:34 - 0:35Mosquitoes have been around
-
0:35 - 0:37for over a hundred million years
-
0:37 - 0:38and over that time have coevolved
-
0:38 - 0:40with all sorts of species,
-
0:40 - 0:41including our own.
-
0:41 - 0:43They are actually thousands of species
-
0:43 - 0:44of mosquitoes in the world,
-
0:44 - 0:46but they all share one insidious quality:
-
0:46 - 0:47they suck blood
-
0:47 - 0:51and they're really, really good at sucking blood.
-
0:51 - 0:52Here's how they do it.
-
0:52 - 0:54After landing, a mosquito will slather
-
0:54 - 0:56some saliva onto the victim's skin,
-
0:56 - 0:57which works like an antiseptic,
-
0:57 - 0:59numbing the spot so we don't notice their attack.
-
0:59 - 1:02This is what causes the itchy, red bumps, by the way.
-
1:02 - 1:04Then the bug will use its serrated mandibles
-
1:04 - 1:06to carve a little hole in your skin,
-
1:06 - 1:07allowing it to probe around
-
1:07 - 1:08with its proboscis,
-
1:08 - 1:09searching for a blood vessel.
-
1:09 - 1:10When it hits ones,
-
1:10 - 1:11the lucky parasite can suck
-
1:11 - 1:13two to three times its weight in blood.
-
1:13 - 1:16Turns out we don't really like that too much.
-
1:16 - 1:17In fact, humans hate mosquitoes so much
-
1:17 - 1:20that we spend billions of dollars worldwide
-
1:20 - 1:21to keep them away from us --
-
1:21 - 1:22from citronella candles
-
1:22 - 1:23to bug sprays
-
1:23 - 1:25to heavy-duty agricultural pesticides.
-
1:25 - 1:27But it's not just that mosquitoes are annoying,
-
1:27 - 1:29they're also deadly.
-
1:29 - 1:30Mosquitoes can transmit everything
-
1:30 - 1:31from malaria
-
1:31 - 1:32to yellow fever
-
1:32 - 1:32to West Nile virus
-
1:32 - 1:34to dengue.
-
1:34 - 1:35Over a million people worldwide
-
1:35 - 1:38die every year from mosquito-borne diseases,
-
1:38 - 1:39and that's just people.
-
1:39 - 1:41Horses, dogs, cats,
-
1:41 - 1:43they can all get diseases from mosquitoes too.
-
1:43 - 1:45So, if these bugs so dastardly,
-
1:45 - 1:48why don't we get rid of them?
-
1:48 - 1:49We are humans afterall,
-
1:49 - 1:51and we're pretty good at getting rid of species.
-
1:51 - 1:53Well, it's not quite so simple.
-
1:53 - 1:54Getting rid of the mosquito
-
1:54 - 1:55removes a food source
-
1:55 - 1:56for lots of organisms
-
1:56 - 1:58like frogs and fish and birds.
-
1:58 - 2:00Without them, plants would lose a pollinator.
-
2:00 - 2:01But some scientists say
-
2:01 - 2:04that mosquitoes aren't actually all that important.
-
2:04 - 2:06If we got rid of them, they argue,
-
2:06 - 2:08another species would simply take their place
-
2:08 - 2:11and we'd probably have far fewer deaths from malaria.
-
2:11 - 2:12The problem is
-
2:12 - 2:14that nobody knows what would happen
-
2:14 - 2:16if we killed off all the mosquitoes.
-
2:16 - 2:18Something better may take their spot
-
2:18 - 2:21or perhaps something even worse.
-
2:21 - 2:22The question is,
-
2:22 - 2:24are we willing to take that risk?

Everyone hates mosquitoes. Besides the annoying buzzing and biting, mosquito-borne diseases like malaria kill over a million people each year (plus horses, dogs and cats). And over the past 100 million years, they've gotten good at their job -- sucking up to three times their weight in blood, totally undetected. So shouldn't we just get rid of them? Rose Eveleth shares why scientists aren't sure.
