TEDxDubai - Loy Machedo - Stone of judgement
-
0:15 - 0:16How many kids are there
-
0:16 - 0:18in this room?
-
0:18 - 0:21Could I see your hands?
-
0:23 - 0:26I would dedicate this presentation
-
0:26 - 0:28to every child in this room,
-
0:28 - 0:30including the child in you,
-
0:30 - 0:32and the children around the world.
-
0:32 - 0:34So I want you to pay attention
-
0:34 - 0:37to this person standing here
-
0:40 - 0:44What does it mean to be different?
-
0:44 - 0:46To find the answer to this really profound question,
-
0:46 - 0:48I decided to ask the guru
-
0:48 - 0:50of all gurus,
-
0:50 - 0:53Google.com
-
0:53 - 0:55I googled the question
-
0:55 - 0:57and voila! I got the answer.
-
0:57 - 0:58However, there was a problem
-
0:58 - 1:00because I got somewhere around
-
1:00 - 1:06410,786,434 pages only.
-
1:06 - 1:07So, since we have less time
-
1:07 - 1:11I will compress it into one single sentence
-
1:11 - 1:14like my figure.
-
1:14 - 1:16And this is what I got.
-
1:16 - 1:20When you have CBL:
-
1:20 - 1:23two or more cultures, beliefs, lifestyles,
-
1:23 - 1:26or when you have VOP:
-
1:26 - 1:28views, opinions, perceptions,
-
1:28 - 1:31that is when you have difference.
-
1:31 - 1:32Now, if you look at me
-
1:32 - 1:36I have a few tatoos on my body,
-
1:36 - 1:39just one extended, one really large.
-
1:39 - 1:43Now, you might think I'm different from you,
-
1:43 - 1:44but I'm just like you.
-
1:44 - 1:45I eat, I sleep, I laugh, I cry.
-
1:45 - 1:48How many of you do that?
-
1:48 - 1:51Mashallah, we are the same.
-
1:51 - 1:53I also have this hobby of reading books,
-
1:53 - 1:56writing articles and being on Facebook.
-
1:56 - 1:57How many of you do that?
-
1:57 - 2:00Mashallah, we are the same.
-
2:00 - 2:02And guess what, I have a few dreams.
-
2:02 - 2:04I would like to have long hair,
-
2:04 - 2:07although it doesn't seem to be working.
-
2:07 - 2:09I'd like to touch the lives of many people.
-
2:09 - 2:12And when I die, I want to die fast.
-
2:12 - 2:15How many of you would like that?
-
2:15 - 2:17Okay, a few less hands.
-
2:17 - 2:19But when people look at me,
-
2:19 - 2:21this is the expression they give.
-
2:21 - 2:24(Laughter)
-
2:25 - 2:27It's like, I'm walking to the grocery
-
2:27 - 2:28and totally --
-
2:30 - 2:32I mean, I'm like,
-
2:32 - 2:36"Whoa, relax, chill dude."
-
2:36 - 2:37And people have baptized me
-
2:37 - 2:40with those wonderful names.
-
2:40 - 2:42Let me give you a few:
-
2:42 - 2:46smoker, drinker, even a drug adict,
-
2:46 - 2:47guy who drives a Harley,
-
2:47 - 2:50gangster, a wrestler,
-
2:50 - 2:53undertaker's brother and a heavy metal freak.
-
2:54 - 2:55Yeah.
-
2:55 - 2:58And the latest one to top the chart,
-
2:58 - 3:00I've got this one:
-
3:00 - 3:02(Roars)
-
3:02 - 3:03You should see people
-
3:03 - 3:06when they come into the lift and see me.
-
3:06 - 3:08Oh, my!
-
3:08 - 3:12Now, to your bad news,
-
3:12 - 3:14I don't smoke, I don't drink,
-
3:14 - 3:15I don't drive a Harley,
-
3:15 - 3:18instead I love playing with kids.
-
3:18 - 3:21I love children and children love to play with me.
-
3:21 - 3:22But you should see the parents
-
3:22 - 3:23when they see me
-
3:23 - 3:25with their kids.
-
3:26 - 3:27They go like,
-
3:27 - 3:31"Uh, let's take him."
-
3:31 - 3:33Hey, what's the difference?
-
3:33 - 3:35What is the difference?
-
3:35 - 3:37I'm a speaker, writer,
-
3:37 - 3:39I'm a person who loves to read books.
-
3:39 - 3:41I'm just like you.
-
3:41 - 3:43Forget me.
-
3:43 - 3:46How many other people do we judge,
-
3:46 - 3:49even before we know them?
-
3:49 - 3:52Have you ever thought about it?
-
3:52 - 3:53The funny thing is
-
3:53 - 3:56because all this experiences
-
3:56 - 3:58I've come up with this new theory
-
3:58 - 4:01that it hurts.
-
4:01 - 4:05It hurts when you judge other people.
-
4:05 - 4:08It hurts when you deprive someone
-
4:08 - 4:09of their dreams,
-
4:09 - 4:11of their goals,
-
4:11 - 4:12of even a promotion,
-
4:12 - 4:16because you categorize them into different boxes.
-
4:16 - 4:17And it hurts
-
4:17 - 4:19when you teach your children
-
4:19 - 4:23something that is not true.
-
4:23 - 4:25Because of the experiences in my life
-
4:25 - 4:28I came up with this new theory
-
4:28 - 4:30and by the way, it's copyright.
-
4:30 - 4:34I call it The Loy's Theory of Eggs.
-
4:34 - 4:36As for this profound theory,
-
4:36 - 4:38we human beings are like eggs.
-
4:38 - 4:40Different shapes, sizes and colors.
-
4:40 - 4:42Some of them are really very big,
-
4:42 - 4:44some medium, some really very small.
-
4:44 - 4:46But my theory states:
-
4:46 - 4:48All of us eggs are equal.
-
4:48 - 4:50Give a round of applause.
-
4:50 - 4:51(Applause)
-
4:51 - 4:53Thank you.
-
4:53 - 4:55No, my presentation is not over.
-
4:55 - 4:58One of them just got up, relax.
-
4:58 - 4:59So as I was saying,
-
4:59 - 5:02we all eggs are equal.
-
5:04 - 5:08If you want proof, do this.
-
5:08 - 5:09Break an egg.
-
5:09 - 5:10What do you get?
-
5:10 - 5:12The same stuff inside.
-
5:12 - 5:14But you get some people here
-
5:14 - 5:16who categorize human beings
-
5:16 - 5:18like they categorize eggs,
-
5:18 - 5:20region or country.
-
5:20 - 5:23You get them dividing people like
-
5:23 - 5:26good quality, bad quality.
-
5:26 - 5:29By one, get two free.
-
5:29 - 5:31What's wrong with people?
-
5:32 - 5:35But try doing this.
-
5:35 - 5:38Give this small child a dozen eggs,
-
5:38 - 5:40different colors.
-
5:40 - 5:42For that child an egg is just an egg.
-
5:42 - 5:44And nothing was made more evident to me
-
5:44 - 5:47than the time when I was at the airport
-
5:47 - 5:50waiting for my flight, daydreaming,
-
5:50 - 5:53thinking of those romantic thoughts.
-
5:53 - 5:56And then it happened.
-
5:56 - 5:58Someting started scratcing my hand.
-
5:58 - 6:01I looked down and I saw this.
-
6:01 - 6:04A small baby girl apparently thought
-
6:04 - 6:06I was a walking-coloring book
-
6:06 - 6:08(Laughter)
-
6:08 - 6:13(Applause)
-
6:14 - 6:19and she actually started coloring me up.
-
6:19 - 6:22Now, I decided to show her the angry look.
-
6:22 - 6:26And I showed her --
-
6:26 - 6:29She gave me her look.
-
6:30 - 6:32And then I was like, I have to tell her.
-
6:32 - 6:34"Oh, it's okay, relax.
-
6:34 - 6:37How about coloring this?"
-
6:37 - 6:39And she was very happy.
-
6:39 - 6:41She started going higher and higher.
-
6:41 - 6:42And before I knew it
-
6:42 - 6:43two of her friends came running by
-
6:43 - 6:46and all three started coloring me up.
-
6:46 - 6:48Now picture this,
-
6:48 - 6:51a big tatooed guy and three babies
-
6:51 - 6:54coloring him up.
-
6:54 - 6:55In fact, a lot of people got
-
6:55 - 6:58a lot of photographs of it for free.
-
6:58 - 7:02But they didn't judge me.
-
7:04 - 7:06The thing about children is
-
7:06 - 7:08for them, everything is like
-
7:08 - 7:11a sense of curiosity and wonder.
-
7:11 - 7:14They never, ever judge anyone.
-
7:14 - 7:16Have you ever tried giving a child a book?
-
7:16 - 7:18The child will open the pages,
-
7:18 - 7:19try to read the book.
-
7:19 - 7:22If not possible, eat it.
-
7:22 - 7:27But a child never judges a book by its cover.
-
7:27 - 7:28I really wonder:
-
7:28 - 7:32Why do we grown-ups lose that sense of mischief?
-
7:32 - 7:33In fact during the break --
-
7:33 - 7:36Is Ali in the house? Ali, where are you?
-
7:36 - 7:39Is Ali somewhere here?
-
7:41 - 7:44Okay, there are a couple of Alis.
-
7:44 - 7:47Ali asked me this beautiful question.
-
7:47 - 7:49And I admire his courage for it.
-
7:49 - 7:50He said, "Hey dude,
-
7:50 - 7:52when you start looking like this,
-
7:52 - 7:56how would you not expect someone to judge you?"
-
7:56 - 7:58I mean how much of media does it take
-
7:58 - 7:59for us to change opinions
-
7:59 - 8:02or form opinions about other people?
-
8:02 - 8:03Try doing this.
-
8:03 - 8:05Take a group of children,
-
8:05 - 8:06put them here.
-
8:06 - 8:08From different cultures, communities, religions.
-
8:08 - 8:09Put them here.
-
8:09 - 8:13And do the same with adults.
-
8:13 - 8:15You'd see a difference here,
-
8:15 - 8:16and you'd see a difference here.
-
8:16 - 8:18The reason is
-
8:18 - 8:24because someone out there is giving you information
-
8:24 - 8:25which is not true.
-
8:25 - 8:27And for us, we are comfortable
-
8:27 - 8:30to hide within our comfort zone
-
8:30 - 8:32and judge others.
-
8:32 - 8:35I believe that every human being here
-
8:35 - 8:37is equal.
-
8:37 - 8:38I believe that
-
8:38 - 8:41when you categorize people through their CBL,
-
8:41 - 8:45cultures, beliefs, lifestyles,
-
8:45 - 8:48or even VOPs,
-
8:48 - 8:51views, opinions or perceptions
-
8:51 - 8:54you are comitting a sin.
-
8:54 - 8:57Including when you judge someone with tatoos.
-
8:57 - 9:01My dear friends, this is just color.
-
9:01 - 9:05When I die, I'm going six feet underground
-
9:05 - 9:09and most of you are gonna join me.
-
9:09 - 9:11So why the differentiation
-
9:11 - 9:15between me or anyone else.
-
9:15 - 9:19So that is where I would conclude.
-
9:19 - 9:24As I conclude, this is the message I give to all of you:
-
9:24 - 9:26We are all born different,
-
9:26 - 9:28to different fathers and mothers
-
9:28 - 9:29but we are all the same.
-
9:29 - 9:32We are all sisters, we are brothers.
-
9:32 - 9:34We all have a pair of limbs,
-
9:34 - 9:36eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
-
9:36 - 9:37We all look the same.
-
9:37 - 9:41Be from far East, the West, North or South.
-
9:41 - 9:43When we are all the same,
-
9:43 - 9:46why do we hate, fight and cry.
-
9:46 - 9:48Instead, let's pray for one another
-
9:48 - 9:51under this vast beautiful blue sky.
-
9:51 - 9:55Every waking day, bless each and everyone,
-
9:55 - 9:59by the cool summer breeze or the warmth of the sun.
-
9:59 - 10:02Look at each and everyone
-
10:02 - 10:04through the eyes of a child.
-
10:04 - 10:06Hold each other close
-
10:06 - 10:09through prayers, powerful, yet mild.
-
10:09 - 10:13Take those baby steps like walking.
-
10:13 - 10:15And do this one small thing.
-
10:15 - 10:17No more wars will be fought.
-
10:17 - 10:19Songs of victory we will sing.
-
10:19 - 10:22Let's become like little children,
-
10:22 - 10:25this is the message that I bring.
-
10:25 - 10:28For this child here, you all,
-
10:28 - 10:31every person here,
-
10:31 - 10:33every child in the world
-
10:33 - 10:34is truly
-
10:34 - 10:37the beauty of small things.
-
10:37 - 10:41(Applause)
