Amos Calling

  • 0:18 - 0:27
In December 2006, I went away from Merauke with Australia as my destination
  • 0:27 - 0:36
to reveal to the world of the oppression which Indonesian government did towards the Papua's people
  • 0:36 - 0:38
(This act) should be revealed to the world.
  • 0:38 - 0:46
Crossed over the ocean from Merauke, Papua to Australia was an incredible journey
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    That was remarkable
  • 0:48 - 0:52
without God's intervention, it was impossible we can be here
  • 0:52 - 0:57
We, 43 people, had God's help (in crossing over the ocean)
  • 0:57 - 1:04
The boat was built in Serui, and in Kampung Ambai on Ambai Island
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    The boat was built there
  • 1:07 - 1:12
and with that boat we sailed to Australia
  • 1:13 - 1:21
We had a remarkable experience on the journey
  • 1:21 - 1:30
because 2 of the boat engines were broken, totally broken
  • 1:31 - 1:35
and we didn't know where we were
  • 1:35 - 1:38
(In the beginning of journey) we figured that the journey will take 16 hours
  • 1:38 - 1:41
but because of the broken engines
  • 1:41 - 1:44
we were drifted in the middle of the ocean for four days
  • 1:44 - 1:48
and in the fourth day we managed to repair the engine a bit
  • 1:48 - 1:53
it was in the middle of the night,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
we repaired one of the engines
  • 1:55 - 1:59
and the boat managed to sail a bit
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    the boat sailed very slow
  • 2:03 - 2:07
until we saw land, we saw it like a dot far away
  • 2:07 - 2:15
we saw that dot at dawn, around six in the morning.
  • 2:15 - 2:21
we didn't know then, which land was that, as we didn't have any compass
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    We didn't use compass
  • 2:23 - 2:31
We were heading to that dot, and then the dot became bigger...no, not bigger but more dots.
  • 2:31 - 2:36
before long those dots connected together and become a land, a big land
  • 2:36 - 2:45
while we headed to the shore we tried to figure out which the land was
  • 2:45 - 2:51
We tried to land with the boat into the shore from the morning until about 5 in the afternoon
  • 2:51 - 2:56
but finally at 5 p.m. we decided to swim to the shore
  • 2:56 - 2:59
because the waves were too high and the boat can not come to shore
  • 2:59 - 3:02
then 10 of us decided to swim to the shore
  • 3:02 - 3:08
when we reached the shore, we also had to swim across a river
  • 3:08 - 3:12
Donny Rum was the first swimmer
  • 3:12 - 3:19
Before Donny swam to shore, he said:
  • 3:19 - 3:23
When I reached the shore and reached that sign over there
  • 3:23 - 3:26
I will tell you what sign that was
  • 3:26 - 3:28
So he swam and reached the shore and saw the Australian sign
  • 3:28 - 3:31
And he shouted to us that it was Australian sign
  • 4:01 - 4:08
And then we spent a night there, and in the morning we met with the immigration officers
  • 4:08 - 4:14
The next day they brought us to a hospital to undergo some tests
  • 4:14 - 4:21
we were quarantined at the hospital, and that night they sent us to Christmas Island
  • 4:21 - 4:26
We stayed in Christmas Island for 2,5 months
  • 4:26 - 4:29
I have a reason to go to Australia
  • 4:30 - 4:35
The reason was that throughout my life in Papua,
  • 4:36 - 4:39
on Soeharto era, it was never revealed
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    that Papua had been oppressed
  • 4:42 - 4:47
Indonesian's Democracy had covered the oppression
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    Soeharto covered all up
  • 4:49 - 4:59
That is the reason which urged me to come to Australia. I would ask Australian government for support
  • 4:59 - 5:05
I ask them to see their neighboring land, they have to help
  • 5:05 - 5:12
to free Papua from the oppression. That's my reason to come here.
  • 5:15 - 5:21
During my stay here, I was homesick. I missed Papua.
  • 5:21 - 5:28
Before I became citizen, I thought I will never come back to Papua
  • 5:28 - 5:33
But after I have my citizenship here, I have the right to go home.
  • 5:33 - 5:42
I know that I will be protected by Australian government because I came with Papua's background
  • 5:42 - 5:49
So I call for my friends who watch what I have said here
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    Let's come together
  • 5:52 - 5:57
Let's talk and tell the world that we are oppressed
  • 5:57 - 5:59
That is what we asked, we want justice
  • 5:59 - 6:03
we need to have justice in Papua
  • 6:03 - 6:12
we have to be informed about killings everywhere (in Papua) and Indonesia has to admit that
  • 6:12 - 6:17
And that Indonesia had done something that it shouldn't have done
  • 6:17 - 6:22
Indonesia had sent plenty of troops to Papua and considered Papua as terrorists
  • 6:22 - 6:30
which we are not. We are not terrorist, we need justice. How we can achieve justice
  • 6:30 - 6:35
So I call my friends, let's work together
