How to control someone else's arm with your brain

  • Not Synced
The brain is an amazing and complex organ.
  • Not Synced
And while many people are fascinated
    by the brain,
  • Not Synced
that can't really tell you that much
    about the properties
  • Not Synced
    about how the brain works
  • Not Synced
    because we don't teach
    neuroscience in schools.
  • Not Synced
And one of the reasons why is that
    the equipment
  • Not Synced
is so complex and so expensive
  • Not Synced
    that it's really only done
    at major universities
  • Not Synced
    and large institutions.
  • Not Synced
And so in order to be able
    to access the brain,
  • Not Synced
you really need to dedicate your life
as spend six and a half years
  • Not Synced
    as a graduate student just
    to become a neuroscientist
  • Not Synced
who gets access to these tools.
  • Not Synced
    And that's a shame because
one out of five of us,
  • Not Synced
that's 20 percent of the entire world,
  • Not Synced
    will have a neurological disorder.
  • Not Synced
    And there are zero cures
    for these diseases.
  • Not Synced
And so it seems that what
    we should be doing
  • Not Synced
    is reaching back earlier
    in the eduction process
  • Not Synced
    and teaching students
    about neuroscience
  • Not Synced
so that in the future, they may be
    thinking about
  • Not Synced
    possibly becoming a brain scientist.
  • Not Synced
When I was a graduate student,
my lab mate Tim Marzullo and myself,
  • Not Synced
decided that what if we took this
    complex equipment that we have
  • Not Synced
    for studying the brain
    and made it simple enough
  • Not Synced
    and affordable enough that
    anyone that you know,
  • Not Synced
an ameatur or a high school student,
  • Not Synced
    could learn and actually
    learn and participate
  • Not Synced
    in the discovery of neuroscience.
  • Not Synced
And so we did just that.
  • Not Synced
A few years ago, we started
    a company called Backyard Brains
  • Not Synced
and we make DIY neuroscience equipment
  • Not Synced
and I brought some here tonight
  • Not Synced
and I want to do some demonstrations,
  • Not Synced
you guys want to see some?
  • Not Synced
    So I need a volunteer.
  • Not Synced
    What is your name?
  • Not Synced
    All right, Sam, I'm going
    to record from your brain,
  • Not Synced
    have you had this before?
  • Not Synced
    Sam: No.
  • Not Synced
Greg Gage: I need you to stick out
    your arm for science,
  • Not Synced
roll up your sleeve a bit,
  • Not Synced
So what I'm going to do,
  • Not Synced
I'm putting electrodes on your arm,
  • Not Synced
    and you're probably wondering
  • Not Synced
I just said I'm going to record
    from your brain,
  • Not Synced
what am I doing with my arm?
  • Not Synced
    Well you have about
    80 billion neurons
  • Not Synced
    inside your brain right now,
  • Not Synced
    they're sending electrical messages
back and forth and chemical messages.
  • Not Synced
Some of your neurons right here
    in your motor cortex
  • Not Synced
are going to send messages down
when you move your arm like this.
  • Not Synced
    They're going to go down
    across your corpus callosum,
  • Not Synced
    down onto your spinal cord
    to your lower motor neuron
  • Not Synced
    out to your muscles here,
  • Not Synced
    and that electrical discharge
is going to be picked up
  • Not Synced
    by these electrodes right here
  • Not Synced
and we're going to listen to exactly
what your brain is going to be doing.
  • Not Synced
So I'm going to turn this on for a second,
  • Not Synced
    have you ever heard
    what your brain sounds like?
  • Not Synced
    Sam: No.
  • Not Synced
GG: All right, let's try it out.
  • Not Synced
So go ahead and squeeze your hand.
  • Not Synced
    [ sound of neurons]
  • Not Synced
    So what you're listening to,
  • Not Synced
so this is your motor units
    happening right here.
  • Not Synced
Let's take a look at it as well.
  • Not Synced
So I'm going to stand over here,
  • Not Synced
and I'm going to open up our app here.
  • Not Synced
So now I want you to squeeze.
  • Not Synced
    [neurons]
  • Not Synced
    So right here, these are
    the motor units
  • Not Synced
that are happening from her spinal cord,
  • Not Synced
out to her muscle right here,
  • Not Synced
and as she's doing it, you're seeing
    the electrical activity
  • Not Synced
    that's happening here.
  • Not Synced
    You can even click here
and try to see one of them.
  • Not Synced
So keep doing it really, really hard.
  • Not Synced
    So now we've paused,
  • Not Synced
    and one motor action potential
    that's happening right now
  • Not Synced
    inside of your brain.
  • Not Synced
Do you guys want to see some more?
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    That's interesting,
    but let's get it better.
  • Not Synced
    I need one more volunteer.
  • Not Synced
    What is your name sir?
  • Not Synced
    Man: Miguel.
  • Not Synced
    GG: Miguel?
  • Not Synced
You're going to stand right here.
  • Not Synced
So when you're moving your arm like this,
  • Not Synced
your brain is sending a signal
down to your muscle right here.
  • Not Synced
I want you to move your arm as well.
  • Not Synced
So your brain is going to send
a signal down to your muscle.
  • Not Synced
And so it turns out that there is
    a nerve that's right here
  • Not Synced
that runs up here that enervates
    these three fingers
  • Not Synced
and it's close enough to the skin
    that we might be able
  • Not Synced
    to stimulate that so that
    what we can do
  • Not Synced
    is copy your brain signals
    going out to your hand
  • Not Synced
and inject it into your hand,
  • Not Synced
so that your hand will move
  • Not Synced
when your brain tells your hand to move.
  • Not Synced
So in a sense, she will take away
    your free will
  • Not Synced
and you will no longer have
    any control over this hand.
  • Not Synced
    You with me?
  • Not Synced
So I just need to hook you up.
  • Not Synced
So I'm going to find your ulnar nerve,
  • Not Synced
which is probably right around here.
  • Not Synced
    You don't know what
    you're signing up for
  • Not Synced
    when you come up.
  • Not Synced
So now I'm going to move away
and we're going to plug it
  • Not Synced
    into our human-to-human interface
    over here.
  • Not Synced
Okay, so Sam, I want you
    to squeeze your hand again.
  • Not Synced
    Do it again, perfect.
  • Not Synced
So now I'm going to hook you up
over here so that you get the --
  • Not Synced
it's going to feel a little weird
at first, this is going to feel like a...
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
you know, when you loose your free will,
  • Not Synced
and someone else becomes your agent,
  • Not Synced
it does feel a bit strange.
  • Not Synced
Now I want you to relax your hand.
  • Not Synced
    Alright, Sam, you're with me?
  • Not Synced
So you're going to squeeze it,
  • Not Synced
I'm not going to turn it on you.
  • Not Synced
So go ahead and give it a squeeze.
  • Not Synced
So now, are you ready, Miguel?
  • Not Synced
Miguel: I'm as ready as I'll ever be.
  • Not Synced
GG: I've turned it on, so go ahead
    and turn your hand.
  • Not Synced
Do you feel that a little bit,
  • Not Synced
you want to do it again?
  • Not Synced
    A little bit?
  • Not Synced
    So relax.
  • Not Synced
    So hit it again.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Oh, perfect, perfect.
  • Not Synced
    So relax, do it again.
  • Not Synced
    All right, so right now,
  • Not Synced
your brain is controlling your arm
  • Not Synced
and it's also controlling his arm,
  • Not Synced
so go ahead and just do it
    one more time.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    All right, so it's perfect.
  • Not Synced
    So now, what would happen
if I took over my control
  • Not Synced
    of your hand?
  • Not Synced
And so, just relax your hand.
  • Not Synced
    What happens?
  • Not Synced
    Ah, nothing.
  • Not Synced
    Why not?
  • Not Synced
Because the brain has to do it.
  • Not Synced
    So you do it again.
  • Not Synced
    All right, it's perfect.
  • Not Synced
    All right, thank you guys
for being such a good sport,
  • Not Synced
    this is what's happening
    all across the world, electrophysiology,
  • Not Synced
we're going to bring on the neuro-revolution.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
