The Space Toilet

  • 0:01 - 0:02
When you go to the bathroom on earth,
  • 0:02 - 0:05
you're relying on gravity...pretty, pretty heavily
  • 0:05 - 0:09
Imagine if you're half way done and somebody shut off gravity
  • 0:09 - 0:13
It'd be a mess and you'd float of the toilet
  • 0:13 - 0:17
So, when we designed our space toilet
  • 0:17 - 0:19
first to a seat belt on it, to hold you down
  • 0:19 - 0:27
and then, we decided to separate solids and liquids because it is easier to store that way
  • 0:27 - 0:32
So, we just have tube that you pee into, and have air pulled to the tube
  • 0:32 - 0:34
so it's not a big deal
  • 0:34 - 0:35
For the women, there's a cup that fits-up against them,
  • 0:35 - 0:38
For the guy , it's just a little tunnel, you just pee into the stupid
  • 0:38 - 0:40
it goes into a sewage tank
  • 0:40 - 0:45
But the solids that come out of your body ,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
that's a harder problem to solve
  • 0:47 - 0:49
And it's an important medical one,
  • 0:49 - 0:50
because on Earth everything falls on the floor
  • 0:50 - 0:52
But in space it's gonna float around
  • 0:52 - 0:58
So it'll really make you sick
  • 0:58 - 1:01
If you re-ingest something that came out of your body
  • 1:01 - 1:03
it will really make you sick
  • 1:03 - 1:04
And we can't afford to get that sick
  • 1:04 - 1:06
So we designed a toilet that,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
instead of gravity pulling everything into the toilet,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    it has air flow
  • 1:10 - 1:12
There's air pulled down into the toilet
  • 1:12 - 1:13
-- Sort of windy when you're sitting there
  • 1:13 - 1:15
But it pulls everything out of your body
  • 1:15 - 1:17
Everything that comes out of your body
  • 1:17 - 1:19
gets pulled down into the toilet by the air
  • 1:19 - 1:23
and then in the storage tank we just expose that to the vaccum of space ,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
so it basically just freeze-dries everything
  • 1:26 - 1:27
So it killes all the bacteria
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    so there's no smell
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    And then we store it
  • 1:31 - 1:34
And then when we have a whole bunch if stored
  • 1:34 - 1:36
we put in a little unmanned supply ship
  • 1:36 - 1:39
and then we undock it and then it burns up in the atmosphere
  • 1:39 - 1:46
So the next time you see a beautiful shooting star going across the sky
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    that's what it might be
