My life with autism | Fabrizio Schahin Carita | TEDxJardins

  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Good Morning!
  • 0:09 - 0:12
I'm 23 years old and I started working,
  • 0:12 - 0:14
as my mother has just said,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    after I finished high school.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    Which I really wanted.
  • 0:20 - 0:23
I wanted be like a normal person,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    who is not autistic.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
I don't like when people look at me weird
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    only because I'm different.
  • 0:32 - 0:38
    I wanted to introduce myself
like a normal person in society.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    I like my two dogs,
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    they are my best friends,
    and the only ones.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
When I'm nervous because of work,
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    sometimes I get upset
with my bosses or my colleagues,
  • 0:58 - 1:02
my two dogs calm me down.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    They are my buddies,
    I can't live without them,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
and both of them like me as well.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    (Laughter)
  • 1:13 - 1:16
I took a DJ course which I liked a lot,
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    I was very interested,
  • 1:20 - 1:25
because when I went to parties
    with my siblings,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
I liked to watch the DJ work.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
I thought it was very interesting.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
I took this course and learned about it.
  • 1:34 - 1:40
    Now I'm taking drama classes,
    which I like a lot.
  • 1:41 - 1:47
I love dancing and doing choreographies.
  • 1:49 - 1:54
In drama classes I have friends
    who are unique too,
  • 1:54 - 1:58
because I don't have friends out of there.
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    I've taken other courses,
  • 2:01 - 2:06
    like gardening
    and administrative assistant.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
I like traveling by plane very much,
  • 2:14 - 2:18
I like to take a bus and subway alone.
  • 2:18 - 2:24
    After I learned, I like
to take the bus on my own.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
For me, I don't mind at all
    taking the bus.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
When I learned to take the bus
    I was very happy
  • 2:34 - 2:39
to go around the city on my own,
    without my mother.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    (Laughter)
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    My power of choice,
  • 2:48 - 2:53
I earn money and I can save it.
  • 2:53 - 2:59
    My mother and brother
helped me to manage my money
  • 2:59 - 3:03
and I can buy something, save it,
    not spend so much.
  • 3:03 - 3:08
If both of them hadn't taught me
not to spend money on anything
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    I wouldn't have any money.
  • 3:12 - 3:17
    I'm very happy with what
    I learned with them.
  • 3:19 - 3:24
    I'm thankful to the NGO
that helped me to enter the job market.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    Without their help,
    I wouldn't have found a job
  • 3:27 - 3:30
and I'd be looking for one until today.
  • 3:31 - 3:35
I thank so much this NGO that helped me.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
I like my job because they treat me well,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    like a normal person,
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    They don't treat me differently.
  • 3:48 - 3:52
    Everything is equal,
because I don't like to be different.
  • 3:54 - 3:58
    I'm very happy working,
I can't stand not to work.
  • 3:58 - 4:02
    I don't see myself
without a job in the world.
  • 4:03 - 4:07
I don't like to stay at home
    doing nothing.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    My life is only work!
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    (Laughter)
  • 4:15 - 4:20
This is a photo of another lecture I did,
  • 4:20 - 4:24
my mother invited me to do it.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    I went to another NGO,
    I enjoyed it so much
  • 4:28 - 4:34
and people liked my lecture as well.
  • 4:34 - 4:38
I talked about my professional life,
  • 4:39 - 4:43
and what I thought about my job.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
    Here is my drama team
    who are my big friends,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    and they like me too.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
    As I've already said,
    without them, I can't live.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    They are awesome.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    They're very funny.
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    I enjoy this group.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    This is my life!
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    (Applause)
