"Redemption Song"

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    At #FREEAMERICA we've done
    a listening and learning tour.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
We visited not only with prosecutors
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    but with legislators,
  • 0:10 - 0:15
    with inmates in our state
    and local prisons,
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    we've gone to immigration
    detention centers,
  • 0:18 - 0:20
we've met a lot of people.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    And we've seen
  • 0:23 - 0:29
    that redemption and transformation
    can happen in our prisons,
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    our jails
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    and our immigration detention centers,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
giving hope to those who want
    to create a better life
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    after serving their time.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    Imagine if we also considered
the front end of this prison pipeline.
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    What would it look like
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    if we intervened with
rehabilitation as a core value --
  • 0:47 - 0:50
with love and compassion as core values?
  • 0:51 - 0:53
We would have a society that is safer,
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    healthier
  • 0:54 - 0:56
and worthy of raising our children in.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
I want to introduce you to James [Cavett].
  • 1:00 - 1:05
James served 12 years in the
    San Quentin State Prison,
  • 1:05 - 1:07
and is being released in 18 months.
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    Now James,
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    like you and me,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
is more than the worst thing he's done.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
He is a father, a husband, a son, a poet.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    He committed a crime;
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    he's paying his debt,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
and working hard to build the skills
  • 1:23 - 1:27
    to make the transition back
    to a productive life
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    when he enters the civilian
    population again.
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    Now James,
  • 1:31 - 1:33
like millions of people behind bars,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
is an example of what happens
  • 1:35 - 1:39
if we believe that our failings
    don't define who we are,
  • 1:39 - 1:42
that we are all worthy of redemption
  • 1:42 - 1:46
and if we support those impacted
    by mass incarceration,
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    we can all heal together.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    I'd like to introduce you
    to James right now,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    and he's going to share
    his journey of redemption
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    through spoken word.
  • Not Synced
    James [Cavett]: Thanks, John.
  • Not Synced
    TED, welcome to San Quentin.
  • Not Synced
    The talent is abundant
    behind prison walls.
  • Not Synced
    Future software engineers,
  • Not Synced
    entrepreneurs,
  • Not Synced
    craftsmen,
  • Not Synced
    musicians
  • Not Synced
    and artists.
  • Not Synced
    This piece is inspired
by all of the hard work
  • Not Synced
that men and women are doing on the inside
  • Not Synced
    to create better lives
    and futures for themselves
  • Not Synced
    after they serve their time.
  • Not Synced
This piece is entitled, "Where I Live."
  • Not Synced
I live in a world where most people
    are too afraid to go.
  • Not Synced
    Surrounded by tall, concrete walls,
  • Not Synced
    steel bars,
  • Not Synced
where razor wire have a way of cutting
away at the hopes for a better tomorrow.
  • Not Synced
    I live in a world
  • Not Synced
that kill people who kill people
  • Not Synced
    in order to teach people
  • Not Synced
    that killing people is wrong.
  • Not Synced
    Imagine that.
  • Not Synced
    Better yet,
  • Not Synced
imagine a world where healed people
    helped hurt people heal
  • Not Synced
    and become strong.
  • Not Synced
    Maybe then we would all
    be singin' redemption song.
  • Not Synced
I live in a world that has been called
    "hell on Earth"
  • Not Synced
    by those trapped inside.
  • Not Synced
But I've come to the stark realization
  • Not Synced
    that prison --
  • Not Synced
it really is what you make it.
  • Not Synced
    You see in spite of
    the harshness of my reality,
  • Not Synced
    there is a silver lining.
  • Not Synced
I knew that my freedom was gonna come,
  • Not Synced
it was just a matter of time
  • Not Synced
and so I treated my first steps
as if they were my last mile
  • Not Synced
    and I realized that you
    don't have to be free
  • Not Synced
    in order to experience freedom.
  • Not Synced
    And just because you're free,
  • Not Synced
doesn't mean that you have freedom.
  • Not Synced
    Many of us,
  • Not Synced
    for years,
  • Not Synced
have been battling our inner demons.
  • Not Synced
    We walk around smiling
    when inside we're really screamin:
  • Not Synced
    freedom.
  • Not Synced
    Don't you get it?
  • Not Synced
    We're all serving time,
  • Not Synced
    we're just in different places.
  • Not Synced
    As for me,
  • Not Synced
    I choose to be free
    from the prisons I've created,
  • Not Synced
    the key:
  • Not Synced
    forgiveness.
  • Not Synced
    Action's my witness.
  • Not Synced
    If we want freedom,
  • Not Synced
    then we gotta think different.
  • Not Synced
    Because freedom ...
  • Not Synced
    it isn't a place.
  • Not Synced
    It's a mind setting.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    (Piano)
  • Not Synced
Old pirates, yes, they rob I,
  • Not Synced
Sold I to the merchant ships.
  • Not Synced
    Minutes after they took I
    from the bottomless pit.
  • Not Synced
    My hands were made strong
by the hand of the almighty.
  • Not Synced
We forward in this generation ...
  • Not Synced
    triumphantly.
  • Not Synced
    Won't you help to sing
    these songs of freedom?
  • Not Synced
'Cause all I ever have --
  • Not Synced
    redemption songs.
  • Not Synced
    Redemption songs.
  • Not Synced
    Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery.
  • Not Synced
None but ourselves can free our minds.
  • Not Synced
Have no fear for atomic energy
  • Not Synced
'cause none of them can stop the time.
  • Not Synced
How long shall they kill our prophets
  • Not Synced
while we stand aside and look?
  • Not Synced
Some say it's just a part of it,
  • Not Synced
we've got to fulfill the book.
  • Not Synced
Won't you help me to sing
    these songs of freedom?
  • Not Synced
'Cause all I ever had --
  • Not Synced
    redemption songs.
  • Not Synced
    Redemption songs.
  • Not Synced
    (Piano)
  • Not Synced
    Emancipate yourself from mental slavery.
  • Not Synced
None but ourselves can free our minds.

  • Not Synced
'Cause all I ever had --
  • Not Synced

  • Not Synced
    Redemption songs.
  • Not Synced
    These songs of freedom.
  • Not Synced
'Cause all I ever had --
  • Not Synced
    redemptions songs.
  • Not Synced
    Redemption songs.
  • Not Synced
    Redemption songs.
  • Not Synced
    (Piano)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
