Andrew Feldmar: MDMA for PTSD
-
0:01 - 0:05I am Andrew Feldmar.
I am a psychologist. -
0:05 - 0:11I have practised psychotherapy for about 40 years in Vancouver, Canada.
-
0:11 - 0:22I belong to the Canadian Psychological Association and right now I'm involved in a study
-
0:22 - 0:28with the help of MAPS.
Ingrid Pacey, a Vancouver Psychiatrist, and myself -
0:28 - 0:39are starting a study about the effectiveness of MDMA as an adjunct to psychotherapy.
-
0:39 - 0:49So why MDMA? Why are we studying MDMA?
Well, studies that have been already completed -
0:49 - 0:59way before it became an illegal substance and now recently with a change in the attitude of the times
-
0:59 - 1:08it looks like MDMA allows one to enter into a state of consciousness where suddenly maybe for some people
-
1:08 - 1:14for the very first time in their lives they find themselves without shame.
-
1:14 - 1:20They find themselves with an open heart, where maybe for decades their heart has been closed
-
1:20 - 1:25and they haven't even noticed it.
So it allows for connection. -
1:25 - 1:37The major effect of PTSD is inability to make meaningful connections.
-
1:37 - 1:46Judith Lewis Herman, a Harvard psychiatrist, actually argues that all the syndromes listed
-
1:46 - 1:54and catalogued, in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual that the American Psychiatric Association uses
-
1:54 - 1:56all of it really boils down to PTSD.
-
1:56 - 2:04So if we can make headway with an efficient way of relieving people
-
2:04 - 2:16from the after effects of trauma or traumas then in a way we alleviate the entire field of mental distress,
-
2:16 - 2:21not just what is now strictly believed to be PTSD.
