World's Longest Glass Bridge Opens in China

  • 0:03 - 0:06
Hi everyone and welcome to only in Asia!
  • 0:06 - 0:11
ah the Grand Canyon Angel Falls
    China's jajajaja canyon hunan province
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    or natural wonders of the
    world with delicate environments
  • 0:14 - 0:16
but you know what they lack
  • 0:16 - 0:21
    massive man-made structures
built over them to allow thousands of tourists
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    to enrich the local ecosystem
  • 0:24 - 0:26
at least that's what they thought in China
  • 0:26 - 0:29
the world's longest glass-bottom to bridge
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    just opened in the aforementioned
    canyon in China
  • 0:32 - 0:36
part of the mountain range that
provided inspiration for the movie Avatar
  • 0:45 - 0:47
no not the part about the eviction
    of indigenous peoples
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    just the beautiful landscapes bit
  • 0:50 - 0:55
the bridge is over 1,400 feet long
and hangs almost a thousand feet
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    above the canyon floor
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    the bridge will host the
    world's highest bungee jump
  • 0:59 - 1:02
and also serve as a runway for paint
  • 1:02 - 1:06
I meant fashion shows a runway
    for fashion shoots that's true
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    the forget about the planes
  • 1:08 - 1:12
now there have been some safety
concerns over glass-bottom bridges in China
  • 1:13 - 1:17
visitors ran in fears cracks appeared
    in another glass bottom bridge
  • 1:17 - 1:19
that you in timeout in last
    October
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    this created a PR challenge
    for the judge a bridge
  • 1:23 - 1:28
owners have used all sorts of methods
such as driving a car over the bridge
  • 1:28 - 1:31
and inviting journalists to take a
sledgehammer to the glass to prove that
  • 1:31 - 1:34
while the top layer of glass
may absorb the shock and crack
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    giving a scary appearance
  • 1:36 - 1:39
the layers underneath do remain intact
  • 1:39 - 1:42
so maybe the bridges are safe after all
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    hopefully safer than China's escalators
  • 1:45 - 1:48
but I can't help feeling sorry
    for the local wildlife
  • 1:48 - 1:52
they will be treated to eight thousand
tourists marching across the canyon every day
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    you know I'm kind
    of a traditionalist
  • 1:54 - 1:59
and I prefer my wild places to be kept wild
with a minimum amount of human development
  • 1:59 - 2:04
i would much prefer to walk across this rickety
    looking Bridge Mountain investing Canada
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    but you know China does
    have some places like that
  • 2:08 - 2:13
this is what some called China's
    most dangerous hiking trail
  • 2:13 - 2:16
that wash and just a few wooden
    boards and chains the safety
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    much more up my alley
  • 2:18 - 2:20
but i guess these glass bridges may provide
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    those who wouldn't normally
experience the beauty of the mountains
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    a chance to experience it
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    which i guess is positive
  • 2:27 - 2:31
i just can't stand the sight
    of swarms of tourists
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    so what do you guys
think of these bridges a good idea
  • 2:34 - 2:36
are you concerned about their safety
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    would you walk across one
  • 2:38 - 2:40
if you need me I'll be at Mount Nimbus
