Three steps to success | Rafael Jimenez | TEDxTijuana
-
0:17 - 0:19Today I will share with you
-
0:19 - 0:22two ideas that are difficult to believe.
-
0:24 - 0:27I hope that these two ideas,
-
0:28 - 0:32these two seeds will be planted
and will grow bit by bit -
0:32 - 0:36until they become so big
that there is no choice -
0:36 - 0:40but to seek a forum like this
to inform all the others -
0:40 - 0:41and spread them out.
-
0:42 - 0:43In my case,
-
0:43 - 0:46these two seeds
were planted 10 years ago. -
0:46 - 0:50And it took living and working
in more that 25 countries -
0:51 - 0:53to be here with you today.
-
0:55 - 0:59Today's topic is '3 Steps to Success'.
-
0:59 - 1:03This idea isn't very hard to believe.
-
1:03 - 1:05In fact, it is quite logical.
-
1:05 - 1:09What is harder to believe
is that these 3 steps -
1:09 - 1:13are exactly the same
wherever you may be: -
1:13 - 1:16in any country, in any culture,
-
1:16 - 1:18in any industry, in any job,
-
1:18 - 1:21for whatever idea that you may have.
-
1:21 - 1:24Wherever you may be, it is the same.
-
1:25 - 1:27Why do I say this?
-
1:27 - 1:28I have worked with people,
-
1:28 - 1:30from small traders,
-
1:30 - 1:31leaders of the biggest companies
-
1:31 - 1:32in the world,
-
1:32 - 1:34to even heads of state.
-
1:34 - 1:39In every country that I was in,
I was told the same thing: -
1:40 - 1:43"Rafa, it's a very good idea
and it's really great but... -
1:43 - 1:45it cannot happen here.
-
1:46 - 1:48Here in Thailand,
here in Switzerland, -
1:48 - 1:51here in the USA and Colombia,
-
1:51 - 1:53here in Kazakhstan.
-
1:53 - 1:54"Here, you can't."
-
1:54 - 1:58"There, yes, you can.
But here, you can't." -
1:58 - 2:02So I said, "Well, that's enough, right?
-
2:02 - 2:05If not here, then where?
-
2:05 - 2:07What are we left with?
-
2:08 - 2:10There is one example
that shows how illogical -
2:10 - 2:13this idea is, shared by all people
-
2:13 - 2:15from any part of the world.
-
2:15 - 2:17Let's think about it.
-
2:17 - 2:19What is the best medicine in the world?
-
2:19 - 2:21In Mexico, many would say:
-
2:21 - 2:24"Well, there is an ointment for the skin
-
2:24 - 2:27from a laboratory
in Switzerland. It's the best." -
2:27 - 2:28"It'll fix everything."
-
2:28 - 2:30If you apply some here,
your headache will go away." -
2:30 - 2:33In Switzerland, there's a thing
called "Schwedenbitter", -
2:33 - 2:36which means "Swedish elixir".
-
2:36 - 2:38They use it for everything.
-
2:38 - 2:40They use it when they have a headache.
-
2:41 - 2:44In Sweden, there is an ointment
-
2:44 - 2:47that retains the miracle of the Mayans
-
2:47 - 2:49from Mexico.
-
2:52 - 2:53What are we doing here?
-
2:54 - 2:56Wherever it is, it is the same.
-
2:56 - 2:58In any country,
-
2:58 - 3:01war and large epidemics aside,
-
3:01 - 3:03there will be the same obstacles,
-
3:03 - 3:05the same opportunities
-
3:05 - 3:07and those 3 steps to success
-
3:07 - 3:08will also be the same.
-
3:10 - 3:12These 3 steps are
-
3:13 - 3:14vision,
-
3:15 - 3:16education
-
3:17 - 3:18and work.
-
3:20 - 3:22The vision is what you are going to do,
-
3:22 - 3:23and where you want to go,
-
3:24 - 3:26seeing your goals clearly.
-
3:27 - 3:30Education is about
how you're going to do this. -
3:30 - 3:33Beyond primary, secondary
and tertiary education, -
3:33 - 3:37we also get professional development
and we get experience. -
3:38 - 3:40Work is the "just do it".
-
3:40 - 3:41There's no way around it.
-
3:41 - 3:44If we want to develop
an idea or a company, -
3:44 - 3:46it will require a lot of work.
-
3:48 - 3:51These 3 steps are just as necessary
-
3:51 - 3:53for the success of any project,
-
3:53 - 3:54wherever it may be.
-
3:56 - 4:00But as a consultant
in business development, -
4:00 - 4:03I would make that first analysis
-
4:03 - 4:05of what is missing in a project.
-
4:06 - 4:09Most of the time, 9 out of 10,
-
4:09 - 4:11only one of these three steps is missing,
-
4:11 - 4:12and that is the vision.
-
4:12 - 4:15Unlike what most people think,
-
4:15 - 4:17it's not the education
or the work that's lacking. -
4:17 - 4:18It's the vision.
-
4:19 - 4:21The vision is that grand dream.
-
4:22 - 4:25It is the clarity of your goals
and objectives. -
4:25 - 4:28It is the strategy that helps you
achieve those goals. -
4:28 - 4:30It is the focus that helps you
walk in a straight line. -
4:31 - 4:32It is the ambition to grow.
-
4:32 - 4:34It is aspiring to make an impact.
-
4:35 - 4:38It is the attitude to endure the bad times
-
4:38 - 4:41and the composure not to lose it
in the good times. -
4:43 - 4:45I mentioned that all these
were equally necessary -
4:45 - 4:48but there is one
that is the most important. -
4:48 - 4:49And that is the vision.
-
4:49 - 4:53A clear vision helps us realize
-
4:53 - 4:56what we're missing
in the learning process -
4:56 - 4:58and makes the education
much more relevant. -
4:59 - 5:01A clear vision,
with a relevant education, -
5:01 - 5:04makes our work much more efficient.
-
5:07 - 5:09Let's do a quick development analysis
-
5:09 - 5:11of a project called "Mexico".
-
5:12 - 5:16I figured it'd be the most relevant issue
here at TEDxTijuana. -
5:17 - 5:20Many people say,
or the hypothesis states, -
5:20 - 5:23that Mexicans don’t work hard enough.
-
5:23 - 5:24Classic, right?
-
5:24 - 5:26We, Mexicans, are lazy.
-
5:26 - 5:28The image of a Mexican
-
5:28 - 5:30taking a nap next to a cactus.
-
5:31 - 5:34But let’s look at the numbers.
-
5:34 - 5:38Mexico has ranked first
among the 34 OECD countries -
5:38 - 5:40for the last 6 years
-
5:40 - 5:43in the average annual hours
per worker. -
5:44 - 5:46Clearly, it’s not a lack of hard work.
-
5:47 - 5:49The second point:
-
5:49 - 5:52statistics show that, in general,
-
5:52 - 5:53the education in Mexico
-
5:53 - 5:55has to catch up
-
5:55 - 5:57and there's a lot of opportunity
to improve. -
5:57 - 5:58Agreed,
-
5:58 - 6:01but let's put these numbers in context.
-
6:02 - 6:04Let's compare them with Switzerland.
-
6:04 - 6:07Switzerland has a population of 8 million.
-
6:07 - 6:10I assure you, and everyone will agree,
-
6:10 - 6:14that we can find from
all 120 million Mexicans, -
6:14 - 6:16less than 7 percent of them,
-
6:17 - 6:218 million Mexicans that are
equal or better educated than -
6:21 - 6:23the entire population of Switzerland.
-
6:25 - 6:26However,
-
6:26 - 6:29when we look at the largest
global companies, -
6:29 - 6:32Switzerland currently has 8 of them,
at one point even 15. -
6:32 - 6:34Mexico only has 3.
-
6:35 - 6:39When we we look for companies
with the best worldwide reputation, -
6:39 - 6:42Switzerland has 3,
Mexico is not even on the list. -
6:44 - 6:46What is missing here?
Is it education? No. -
6:46 - 6:50We have equal or larger number
of educated people. -
6:50 - 6:52For the project "Mexico",
what this country lacks -
6:52 - 6:53is more of the vision.
-
6:55 - 6:58It's the vision to want to achieve
what we propose. -
6:58 - 7:03A vision and ambition
to become the best in the world. -
7:04 - 7:07Let's create a benchmark
in this analysis, -
7:07 - 7:10as we realize that
what we lack is the vision, -
7:10 - 7:15and let's see what a country
with a lot of vision looks like. -
7:15 - 7:16We don't have to go too far.
-
7:16 - 7:181 km from here is the USA.
-
7:18 - 7:21They have been working for generations
-
7:21 - 7:23and even created slogans
-
7:23 - 7:25that they market around the world.
-
7:26 - 7:30The US has these famous slogans:
“The land of opportunity," -
7:30 - 7:32"The American dream".
-
7:32 - 7:34It is a type of marketing
for their people. -
7:34 - 7:38The children in the US grow up
dreaming of great things. -
7:40 - 7:43This marketing is so successful
that people from all over the world, -
7:43 - 7:46well-educated and hardworking,
when they have a dream, -
7:46 - 7:48think of going to the US to achieve it.
-
7:49 - 7:51So let me ask you something:
-
7:51 - 7:53Where is the Mexican dream?
-
7:56 - 7:58I mentioned that I would give 2 seeds
-
7:58 - 7:59that I hope would grow strong:
-
8:00 - 8:03Wherever you may be, it’s all the same.
-
8:03 - 8:06So let's start here and now
-
8:06 - 8:09and build the Great Mexican Dream.
-
8:09 - 8:10Thank you very much.
-
8:10 - 8:13(Applause)
