Three steps to success | Rafael Jimenez | TEDxTijuana

  • 0:17 - 0:19
Today I will share with you
  • 0:19 - 0:22
two ideas that are difficult to believe.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
I hope that these two ideas,
  • 0:28 - 0:32
these two seeds will be planted
and will grow bit by bit
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    until they become so big
    that there is no choice
  • 0:36 - 0:40
but to seek a forum like this
    to inform all the others
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    and spread them out.
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    In my case,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    these two seeds
    were planted 10 years ago.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
And it took living and working
    in more that 25 countries
  • 0:51 - 0:53
to be here with you today.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
Today's topic is '3 Steps to Success'.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
This idea isn't very hard to believe.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
In fact, it is quite logical.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
    What is harder to believe
    is that these 3 steps
  • 1:09 - 1:13
    are exactly the same
    wherever you may be:
  • 1:13 - 1:16
in any country, in any culture,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
in any industry, in any job,
  • 1:18 - 1:21
for whatever idea that you may have.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
Wherever you may be, it is the same.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    Why do I say this?
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    I have worked with people,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    from small traders,
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    leaders of the biggest companies
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    in the world,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    to even heads of state.
  • 1:34 - 1:39
In every country that I was in,
I was told the same thing:
  • 1:40 - 1:43
"Rafa, it's a very good idea
    and it's really great but...
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    it cannot happen here.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    Here in Thailand,
    here in Switzerland,
  • 1:48 - 1:51
here in the USA and Colombia,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    here in Kazakhstan.
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    "Here, you can't."
  • 1:54 - 1:58
    "There, yes, you can.
    But here, you can't."
  • 1:58 - 2:02
So I said, "Well, that's enough, right?
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    If not here, then where?
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    What are we left with?
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    There is one example
    that shows how illogical
  • 2:10 - 2:13
this idea is, shared by all people
  • 2:13 - 2:15
from any part of the world.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    Let's think about it.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
What is the best medicine in the world?
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    In Mexico, many would say:
  • 2:21 - 2:24
"Well, there is an ointment for the skin
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    from a laboratory
    in Switzerland. It's the best."
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    "It'll fix everything."
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    If you apply some here,
    your headache will go away."
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    In Switzerland, there's a thing
    called "Schwedenbitter",
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    which means "Swedish elixir".
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    They use it for everything.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
They use it when they have a headache.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
In Sweden, there is an ointment
  • 2:44 - 2:47
that retains the miracle of the Mayans
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    from Mexico.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    What are we doing here?
  • 2:54 - 2:56
Wherever it is, it is the same.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    In any country,
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    war and large epidemics aside,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
there will be the same obstacles,
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    the same opportunities
  • 3:05 - 3:07
and those 3 steps to success
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    will also be the same.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    These 3 steps are
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    vision,
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    education
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    and work.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
The vision is what you are going to do,
  • 3:22 - 3:23
and where you want to go,
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    seeing your goals clearly.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    Education is about
how you're going to do this.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    Beyond primary, secondary
    and tertiary education,
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    we also get professional development
    and we get experience.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
Work is the "just do it".
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    There's no way around it.
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    If we want to develop
    an idea or a company,
  • 3:44 - 3:46
it will require a lot of work.
  • 3:48 - 3:51
These 3 steps are just as necessary
  • 3:51 - 3:53
for the success of any project,
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    wherever it may be.
  • 3:56 - 4:00
    But as a consultant
    in business development,
  • 4:00 - 4:03
I would make that first analysis
  • 4:03 - 4:05
of what is missing in a project.
  • 4:06 - 4:09
Most of the time, 9 out of 10,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
only one of these three steps is missing,
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    and that is the vision.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    Unlike what most people think,
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    it's not the education
    or the work that's lacking.
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    It's the vision.
  • 4:19 - 4:21
The vision is that grand dream.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
It is the clarity of your goals
    and objectives.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
It is the strategy that helps you
    achieve those goals.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
It is the focus that helps you
    walk in a straight line.
  • 4:31 - 4:32
It is the ambition to grow.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
It is aspiring to make an impact.
  • 4:35 - 4:38
It is the attitude to endure the bad times
  • 4:38 - 4:41
and the composure not to lose it
    in the good times.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    I mentioned that all these
    were equally necessary
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    but there is one
    that is the most important.
  • 4:48 - 4:49
    And that is the vision.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
A clear vision helps us realize
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    what we're missing
    in the learning process
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    and makes the education
    much more relevant.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    A clear vision,
    with a relevant education,
  • 5:01 - 5:04
makes our work much more efficient.
  • 5:07 - 5:09
Let's do a quick development analysis
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    of a project called "Mexico".
  • 5:12 - 5:16
I figured it'd be the most relevant issue
    here at TEDxTijuana.
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    Many people say,
    or the hypothesis states,
  • 5:20 - 5:23
that Mexicans don’t work hard enough.
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    Classic, right?
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    We, Mexicans, are lazy.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    The image of a Mexican
  • 5:28 - 5:30
taking a nap next to a cactus.
  • 5:31 - 5:34
But let’s look at the numbers.
  • 5:34 - 5:38
    Mexico has ranked first
    among the 34 OECD countries
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    for the last 6 years
  • 5:40 - 5:43
    in the average annual hours
    per worker.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
Clearly, it’s not a lack of hard work.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    The second point:
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    statistics show that, in general,
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    the education in Mexico
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    has to catch up
  • 5:55 - 5:57
and there's a lot of opportunity
    to improve.
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    Agreed,
  • 5:58 - 6:01
but let's put these numbers in context.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    Let's compare them with Switzerland.
  • 6:04 - 6:07
Switzerland has a population of 8 million.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
I assure you, and everyone will agree,
  • 6:10 - 6:14
    that we can find from
    all 120 million Mexicans,
  • 6:14 - 6:16
less than 7 percent of them,
  • 6:17 - 6:21
    8 million Mexicans that are
    equal or better educated than
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    the entire population of Switzerland.
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    However,
  • 6:26 - 6:29
when we look at the largest
    global companies,
  • 6:29 - 6:32
Switzerland currently has 8 of them,
    at one point even 15.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    Mexico only has 3.
  • 6:35 - 6:39
When we we look for companies
    with the best worldwide reputation,
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    Switzerland has 3,
Mexico is not even on the list.
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    What is missing here?
    Is it education? No.
  • 6:46 - 6:50
We have equal or larger number
    of educated people.
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    For the project "Mexico",
    what this country lacks
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    is more of the vision.
  • 6:55 - 6:58
It's the vision to want to achieve
    what we propose.
  • 6:58 - 7:03
    A vision and ambition
to become the best in the world.
  • 7:04 - 7:07
    Let's create a benchmark
    in this analysis,
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    as we realize that
what we lack is the vision,
  • 7:10 - 7:15
and let's see what a country
with a lot of vision looks like.
  • 7:15 - 7:16
We don't have to go too far.
  • 7:16 - 7:18
1 km from here is the USA.
  • 7:18 - 7:21
They have been working for generations
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    and even created slogans
  • 7:23 - 7:25
that they market around the world.
  • 7:26 - 7:30
The US has these famous slogans:
    “The land of opportunity,"
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    "The American dream".
  • 7:32 - 7:34
It is a type of marketing
    for their people.
  • 7:34 - 7:38
The children in the US grow up
    dreaming of great things.
  • 7:40 - 7:43
    This marketing is so successful
that people from all over the world,
  • 7:43 - 7:46
    well-educated and hardworking,
    when they have a dream,
  • 7:46 - 7:48
think of going to the US to achieve it.
  • 7:49 - 7:51
So let me ask you something:
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    Where is the Mexican dream?
  • 7:56 - 7:58
I mentioned that I would give 2 seeds
  • 7:58 - 7:59
that I hope would grow strong:
  • 8:00 - 8:03
Wherever you may be, it’s all the same.
  • 8:03 - 8:06
So let's start here and now
  • 8:06 - 8:09
and build the Great Mexican Dream.
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    Thank you very much.
  • 8:10 - 8:13
    (Applause)
