Police on Shooting at Anti-Islam Event | The New York Times

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    Starting with the event
    that happened yesterday
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    actually started several months ago
  • 0:06 - 0:13
when Garland ISD contacted us about
    this event being booked there.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
There were security concerns with them
  • 0:18 - 0:24
and so from that we began to work
    with the School District officials
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    Garland officials and
    Police Department officials
  • 0:27 - 0:30
to set up a security plan for this event.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
The security concerns that they have was
  • 0:34 - 0:38
because of the top event and
the speaker that they were having
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    and issues that have been
    with those folks before.
  • 0:44 - 0:49
The event was going very smoothly,
and about 10 minutes to 7,
  • 0:49 - 0:54
    a dark-colored vehicle pulled up
    to the west-entrance parking lot.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    There was a police car
    there blocking that entrance
  • 1:00 - 1:04
a police officer in it along
    with a GISD security officer.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
When that car pulled up and stopped,
those officers began to exit their vehicle
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    and two men exited
    the dark-colored Sedan.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
Both of them had assault rifles,
came around the back of the car
  • 1:17 - 1:20
and started shooting at the police car.
  • 1:21 - 1:26
The police officer in that car
began returning fire and struck both men,
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    taking them down.
  • 1:28 - 1:34
He did what he was trained to do,
and under the fire that he was put under,
  • 1:35 - 1:37
he did a very good job.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    And probably saved lives.
  • 1:43 - 1:50
We think their strategy was to get to
the event center, into the event center
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    and they were not able
to get past that outer perimeter
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    that we had set up,
which was part of that security.
  • 1:57 - 2:06
    (end music)
