The dream we haven't dared to dream

  • Not Synced
    When I think about dreams,
  • Not Synced
    like many of you,
  • Not Synced
    I think about this picture.
  • Not Synced
I was eight when I watched Neil Armstrong
  • Not Synced
    step off the lunar module
onto the surface of the Moon.
  • Not Synced
I had never seen anything like it before,
  • Not Synced
    and I've never seen
    anything like it since.
  • Not Synced
We got to the Moon for one simple reason:
  • Not Synced
John Kennedy committed us to a deadline,
  • Not Synced
and in the absence of that deadline,
  • Not Synced
we would still be dreaming about it.
  • Not Synced
    Leonard Bernstein said two things
    are necessary for great achievement:
  • Not Synced
a plan and not quite enough time.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Deadlines and commitments
  • Not Synced
are the great and fading lessons
  • Not Synced
    of Apollo,
  • Not Synced
and they are what give the word
    "moonshot" its meaning.
  • Not Synced
And our world is in desperate need
    of political leaders
  • Not Synced
    willing to set bold deadlines
  • Not Synced
for the achievement of daring dreams
on the scale of Apollo again.
  • Not Synced
    When I think about dreams,
I think about the drag queens
  • Not Synced
of LA and Stonewall and millions
    of other people risking everything
  • Not Synced
    to come out when that
    was really dangerous,
  • Not Synced
and of this picture of the White House
    lit up in rainbow colors,
  • Not Synced
    yes --
  • Not Synced
    (Applause) --
  • Not Synced
    celebrating America's gay and lesbian
    citizens' right to marry.
  • Not Synced
It is a picture that in my wildest dreams
    I could never have imagined
  • Not Synced
    when I was 18
  • Not Synced
and figuring out that I was gay
  • Not Synced
and feeling estranged from my country
  • Not Synced
and my dreams because of it.
  • Not Synced
I think about this picture of my family
  • Not Synced
that I never dreamed I could ever have --
  • Not Synced
    (Applause) --
  • Not Synced
and of our children holding this headline
  • Not Synced
I never dreamed could ever be printed
    about the Supreme Court ruling.
  • Not Synced
We need more of the courage
  • Not Synced
of drag queens and astronauts --
  • Not Synced
    (Applause) (Laughter) --
  • Not Synced
but I want to talk about the need
for us to dream in more than one dimension
  • Not Synced
because there was something about Apollo
  • Not Synced
    that I didn't know when I was 8,
  • Not Synced
    and something about organizing
    that the rainbow colors over.
  • Not Synced
Of the 30 astronauts in the original
    Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs,
  • Not Synced
    only seven marriages survived.
  • Not Synced
Those iconic images of the astronauts
    bouncing on the Moon
  • Not Synced
    obscure the alcoholism
    and depression on Earth.
  • Not Synced
    Thomas Merton, the trappist monk
  • Not Synced
asked during the time of Apollo,
  • Not Synced
    "What can we gain
    by sailing to the moon
  • Not Synced
if we are not able to cross the abyss
  • Not Synced
    that separates us from ourselves?"
  • Not Synced
And what can we gain by the right to marry
  • Not Synced
if we are not able to cross the acrimony
  • Not Synced
and emotional distance that so often
    separates us from our love?
  • Not Synced
And not just in marriage: I have seen
  • Not Synced
    the most hurtful, destructive,
  • Not Synced
tragic infighting in LGBT and AIDS
  • Not Synced
and breast cancer and non-profit activism,
  • Not Synced
all in the name of love.
  • Not Synced
    Thomas Merton also wrote
    about wars among saints
  • Not Synced
and that "there is a pervasive form
    of contemporary violence
  • Not Synced
    to which the idealist
    most easily succumbs:
  • Not Synced
    activism and overwork.
  • Not Synced
    The frenzy of our activism
    neutralizes our work for peace.
  • Not Synced
    It destroys our own
    inner capacity for peace."
  • Not Synced
    Too often our dreams become
    these compartmentalized fixations
  • Not Synced
    on some future
  • Not Synced
that destroy our ability to be present
    for our lives right now.
  • Not Synced
Our dreams of a better life
    for some future humanity
  • Not Synced
or some other humanity in another country
  • Not Synced
    alienate us from the beautiful
human beings sitting next to us
  • Not Synced
    at this very moment.
  • Not Synced
    Well, that's just the price
    of progress, we say.
  • Not Synced
You can go to the Moon
  • Not Synced
    or you can have stability
    in your family life.
  • Not Synced
And we can't conceive of dreaming
in both dimensions at the same time.
  • Not Synced
And we don't set the bar
    much higher than stability
  • Not Synced
when it comes to our emotional life.
  • Not Synced
    Which is why our technology
    for talking to one another
  • Not Synced
    has gone vertical.
  • Not Synced
    Our ability to listen
    and understand one another
  • Not Synced
    has gone nowhere.
  • Not Synced
    Our access to information
    is through the roof.
  • Not Synced
    Our access to joy, grounded.
  • Not Synced
But this idea, that our present
and our future are mutually exclusive,
  • Not Synced
that to fulfill our potential for doing
    we have to surrender
  • Not Synced
    our profound potential for being,
  • Not Synced
    that the number of transistors
on a circuit can be doubled and doubled,
  • Not Synced
    but our capacity for compassion
and humanity and serenity and love
  • Not Synced
    is somehow limited
  • Not Synced
is a false and suffocating choice.
  • Not Synced
    Now, I'm not suggesting
  • Not Synced
    simply the uninspiring idea
  • Not Synced
    of more work-life balance.
  • Not Synced
What good is it for me to spend
more time with my kids at home
  • Not Synced
if my mind is always somewhere else
    while I'm doing it?
  • Not Synced
I'm not even talking about mindfulness.
  • Not Synced
Mindfulness is all of a sudden becoming
    a tool for improving productivity.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Right?
  • Not Synced
    I'm talking about dreaming
  • Not Synced
as boldly in the dimension of our being
  • Not Synced
as we do about industry and technology.
  • Not Synced
    I'm talking about
    an audacious authenticity
  • Not Synced
that allows us to cry with one another,
  • Not Synced
a heroic humility that allows us
to remove our masks and be real.
  • Not Synced
    It is our inability
    to be with one another,
  • Not Synced
our fear of crying with one another,
that gives rise to so many
  • Not Synced
of the problems we are frantically
trying to solve in the first place,
  • Not Synced
    from Congressional gridlock
    to economic inhumanity.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
I'm talking about what Jonas Salk
    called an Epoch B,
  • Not Synced
a new epoch in which we become
as excited about and curious about
  • Not Synced
    and scientific about the development
    of our humanity
  • Not Synced
    as we are the development
    of our technology.
  • Not Synced
We should not shrink from this opportunity
  • Not Synced
    simply because we don't
    really understand it.
  • Not Synced
    There was a time when
    we didn't understand space.
  • Not Synced
Or because we're more used to
    technology and activism.
  • Not Synced
That is the very definition of being stuck
    in a comfort zone.
  • Not Synced
We are now very comfortable imagining
    unimaginable technological achievement.
  • Not Synced
In 2016, it is the dimension
    of our being itself
  • Not Synced
that cries out for its fair share
  • Not Synced
    of our imagination.
  • Not Synced
Now, we're all here to dream,
  • Not Synced
but maybe if we're honest about it,
  • Not Synced
each of us chasing our own dream.
  • Not Synced
You know, looking at the name tags
to see who can help me with my dream,
  • Not Synced
    sometimes looking right through
    one another's humanity.
  • Not Synced
I can't be bothered with you right now.
I have an idea for saving the world.
  • Not Synced
    Right?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Years ago, once upon a time,
    I had this beautiful company
  • Not Synced
    that created these long journeys
    for heroic civic engagement,
  • Not Synced
    and we had this mantra:
  • Not Synced
    "Human. Kind. Be Both."
  • Not Synced
And we encouraged people to experiment
    outrageously with kindness,
  • Not Synced
    like "go help everybody
    set up their tents."
  • Not Synced
And there were a lot of tents.
  • Not Synced
    "Go buy everybody popsicles."
"Go help everybody fix their flat tires
  • Not Synced
    even though you know
the dinner line is going to get longer."
  • Not Synced
And people really took us up on this,
  • Not Synced
so much so that if you got
a flat tire on the AIDS ride,
  • Not Synced
you had trouble fixing it, because there
were so many people there asking you
  • Not Synced
    if you needed help.
  • Not Synced
For a few days, for tens
    of thousands of people,
  • Not Synced
    we created these worlds
  • Not Synced
that everybody said were the way
they wish the world could always be.
  • Not Synced
    What if we experimented
with creating that kind of world
  • Not Synced
    these next few days,
  • Not Synced
and instead of going up to someone
and asking them, "What do you do?"
  • Not Synced
ask them, "So what are your dreams?"
  • Not Synced
or "What are your broken dreams?"
  • Not Synced
TED. Tend to Each other's Dreams.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
Maybe it's "I want to stay sober"
  • Not Synced
    or "I want to build
    a treehouse with my kid."
  • Not Synced
You know, instead of going up
to the person everybody wants to meet,
  • Not Synced
go up to the person who is all alone
and ask them if they want
  • Not Synced
to grab a cup of coffee.
  • Not Synced
I think what we fear most
  • Not Synced
is that we will be denied the opportunity
    to fulfill our true potential,
  • Not Synced
that we are born to dream
  • Not Synced
and we might die without ever
    having the chance.
  • Not Synced
    Imagine living in a world
    where we simply recognize
  • Not Synced
that deep, existential fear in one another
  • Not Synced
    and love one another boldly
    because we know
  • Not Synced
that to be human is to live
    with that fear.
  • Not Synced
It's time for us to dream
    in multiple dimensions simultaneously,
  • Not Synced
    and somewhere that transcends
    all of the wondrous things
  • Not Synced
we can and will and must do
  • Not Synced
    likes the domain of all
the unbelievable things we could be.
  • Not Synced
It's time we set foot into that dimension
  • Not Synced
and came out about the fact that we
    have dreams there too.
  • Not Synced
    If the Moon could dream,
  • Not Synced
I think that would be its dream for us.
  • Not Synced
It's an honor to be with you.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you very much.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
