Gang Life in Baltimore | The New York Times l Almost Whole
-
0:03 - 0:06Everything Is A Fight, Everything Is A Fight
-
0:07 - 0:10No one knows the feeling of love here
-
0:11 - 0:15Everyone's been mistreated for so long
-
0:15 - 0:16That love is just unheard of
-
0:17 - 0:20Everyday is just the thought of, "Am I gonna make it back home tonight?"
-
0:20 - 0:22Am I gonna make it back home tonight
-
0:22 - 0:24That's a crazy thought to deal with
-
0:24 - 0:29And our emotions are just balled up inside of us
-
0:29 - 0:33We're angry, we're angry, not at anyone in particular
-
0:33 - 0:36Just angry
-
0:39 - 0:41Since I've been eleven I've been getting locked up
-
0:41 - 0:43I'm 25 now. Every year since I was eleven
-
0:43 - 0:46This is the worst place I've ever been
-
0:46 - 0:49It's overpopulated, non-working facilities
-
0:49 - 0:52You got inmates sleeping over top of each other
-
0:52 - 0:54You got people that were protesting Monday
-
0:54 - 0:56They still not let go
-
0:57 - 1:00And it's just a mess, dirty, filthy
-
1:00 - 1:02Even though they are criminals, they're still people
-
1:02 - 1:04And we all treat them like animals
-
1:05 - 1:07They're caged in like animals
-
1:07 - 1:12Yeah, I really am kind of nervous about going down here
-
1:12 - 1:13"Why are you nervous?"
-
1:14 - 1:15Because I don't like seeing the building
-
1:16 - 1:18I hate going down here
-
1:19 - 1:22"I just hope everybody comes out."
-
1:23 - 1:24I don't want everybody to come out
-
1:25 - 1:26"I just don't want it to be a free pee, you know?"
-
1:27 - 1:28There is gonna be a lot of us
-
1:28 - 1:32Everybody I talked to said they coming out
-
1:33 - 1:35They are what you call a family
-
1:35 - 1:38A black gorilla family, you got black panthers
-
1:38 - 1:40You got some people that perceive it as a gang
-
1:41 - 1:42Because they don't understand
-
1:42 - 1:44People fear things they don't understand
-
1:44 - 1:48So their first thing is, "Ok, they a gang
-
1:48 - 1:49They doing criminal activities."
-
1:50 - 1:52I've been like a sore thumb here
-
1:52 - 1:54When I was younger, I was more like a nerd
-
1:54 - 1:57I liked to read, Harry Potter was my favorite book
-
1:57 - 2:00And I was picked on
-
2:01 - 2:04When I was younger I stuck out
-
2:04 - 2:06I was a little bit smarter than everyone else
-
2:06 - 2:09So I found myself putting myself down
-
2:09 - 2:10To fit in
-
2:10 - 2:12My last current charge that I been in full
-
2:13 - 2:17Violations of probation I was charged in court
-
2:17 - 2:21In 2014, dealing with my children's mother
-
2:21 - 2:25Second degree assault, I pleaded guilty to that
-
2:25 - 2:28Just to hurry up and get out of jail
-
2:28 - 2:36Yelling Through The Wall
-
2:37 - 2:38"Y'all gonna go home soon too"
-
2:39 - 2:43This is an incredible day for those of us who have been protesting
-
2:43 - 2:46For the past two weeks, it is a sigh of relief for us
-
2:47 - 2:51A day of joy, a day of pleasant surprise
-
2:51 - 3:03It was indescribable, indescribable.
-
3:05 - 3:07I just felt goosebumps everywhere
-
3:09 - 3:12It felt good that at least someone is at least charged
-
3:13 - 3:14Someone is at least held accountable
-
3:14 - 3:16I think the whole city shared that feeling
-
3:17 - 3:18Goosebumps
-
3:18 - 3:21It begins with bridging the gap
-
3:23 - 3:27Bridging the gap from the streets, to the regular citizens
-
3:28 - 3:31Interviewer "But would you consider yourself a regular citizen?"
-
3:33 - 3:36And it's crazy that I don't, crazy that I don't
-
3:37 - 3:42I don't know why I don't
-
3:43 - 3:45But I am a citizen here though
-
3:46 - 3:48I am a citizen here, I am a citizen here
-
3:49 - 3:50And I want to be treated like one
-
3:51 - 3:52I definitely want to be treated like one
-
3:53 - 3:56I've always had a feeling that I was meant to be great
-
4:03 - 4:06I dont like to be seen as my ego is big
-
4:06 - 4:08There is just something inside of me that
-
4:08 - 4:13War
-
4:14 - 4:17And finally for once, just being active, I feel whole
-
4:17 - 4:19Almost, almost whole
-
