State of Mozilla: Jay Sullivan ''Vision for Mozilla products''
-
0:05 - 0:08People are going to have computing attached to them in many ways
-
0:08 - 0:13And the other thing we're that going to see is, all of the devices around us
-
0:13 - 0:16are going to be connected to the web in some way.
-
0:16 - 0:18What's going to happen?
-
0:18 - 0:20That's going to enable some amazing experiences.
-
0:20 - 0:24It's also going to raise some threats. So on the opportunity side
-
0:24 - 0:28the thing we really need to think about as Mozillians is
-
0:28 - 0:31as the internet of everything really happens, where
-
0:31 - 0:34do we plug in to the stack?
-
0:34 - 0:38I think the first thing is, that we need to conitnue to delight users
-
0:38 - 0:40with the products we build but
-
0:40 - 0:43we cannot take Firefox for granted. Firefox on the desk top
-
0:43 - 0:47and on android now, we passed about 45 million downloads,
-
0:47 - 0:51those are really strong points of influence for us.
-
0:51 - 0:57Having firefox be really signifigant in the world, that gives us our pull
-
0:57 - 1:00in the standards bodies, because it's relevant to people.
-
1:00 - 1:04It gives us a place to put features that
-
1:04 - 1:08protect users online. It's what enabled us to spearhead things like Do Not Track.
-
1:08 - 1:12So having Firefox be strong is very important.
-
1:12 - 1:16And at the platform level we have to continue
-
1:16 - 1:20to drive toward making the web platform as good as any native platform out there.
-
1:20 - 1:24That way developers can build the apps of their dreams
-
1:24 - 1:27And that users can have amazing experiences.
-
1:27 - 1:31Secondly, we talked a lot about data.
-
1:31 - 1:35And how the level of discourse that which we work
-
1:35 - 1:38in terms of what the web should represent, and open standards.
-
1:38 - 1:43It's going beyond having HTML and Javascript and CSS
-
1:43 - 1:46be open developed in a standards based way.
-
1:46 - 1:51We need to make that more human, we need the idea of an identity
-
1:51 - 1:56,that I control, be open. We need to be able to have different data sets
-
1:56 - 2:01from different organizations, that are intermixed, be under control of that individual.
-
2:01 - 2:07And people should be able to share about themselves in porportion to the value that
-
2:07 - 2:09they think they're going to recieve.
-
2:09 - 2:12So we think that we need to move strongly,
-
2:12 - 2:15and add to our portfolio, so to speak,
-
2:15 - 2:18from the idea of client based open standards, to things that are about
-
2:18 - 2:21people and their data.
-
2:21 - 2:25We're getting towards a model that's largely a duoply in mobile,
-
2:25 - 2:29where the way to get your software into people's hands is through
-
2:29 - 2:32an app store that has gatekeepers.
-
2:32 - 2:35We live this right? We can't put Firefox on iOS right?
-
2:35 - 2:39In it's true form right? So this isn't, like, we're not making this up.
-
2:39 - 2:44This is the real world that we're living in. So I think it's up to Mozilla to fight that.
-
2:44 - 2:49And what we're fighting for is an open, horizontally layered
-
2:49 - 2:53stack. Where the hardware you buy, does not dictate
-
2:53 - 2:57the OS you must have, does not dictate the services, the identify, the payments
-
2:57 - 3:01all that up to stack, the content that you get.
-
3:01 - 3:05So users deserve an open platform.
-
3:05 - 3:07And developers deserve an open platform.
-
3:07 - 3:11So, I think it's up to Mozilla to build those things.
