Technology inspired by the love between father and daughter | Carlos Pereira | TEDxUnisinos
-
0:07 - 0:13I'd like to start by saying
that some days can change history. -
0:15 - 0:18For example, September the 11th.
-
0:18 - 0:24On that day, a series of terrible events
changed the history of the world forever. -
0:24 - 0:26Maybe it's just a coincidence,
-
0:26 - 0:31but also on September 11th,
my daughter Clara was born. -
0:31 - 0:37On that day, a series of terrible events
left her with cerebral palsy. -
0:38 - 0:41This is my family, my wife Aline,
and our daughter Clara -
0:41 - 0:48who due to a medical error
is unable to walk or talk. -
0:49 - 0:52And from the moment I learned
what had happened to my daughter, -
0:52 - 0:56empowering people with disabilities
became a passion for me. -
0:56 - 1:00We started working to change lives,
not just for my daughter -
1:00 - 1:06but for thousands of people
with disabilities, in Brazil and abroad. -
1:07 - 1:12Imagine the worst kind of prison.
Would it be solitary confinement? -
1:13 - 1:18For millions of people with disabilities,
their bodies are a prison. -
1:18 - 1:21There is no worse prison
than your own body. -
1:21 - 1:26Just like my daughter, many people
are aware, intelligent, -
1:26 - 1:31but they're trapped inside bodies
which don't obey their commands. -
1:31 - 1:33How do these people communicate?
-
1:33 - 1:35Usually, they communicate using cards,
-
1:35 - 1:38that was how I'd communicate
with my daughter. -
1:38 - 1:39If she wanted an apple, for example,
-
1:39 - 1:43I had to make a card
with the drawing of an apple -
1:43 - 1:45so she could sort of point to it.
-
1:45 - 1:47This was very complicated.
-
1:47 - 1:50That's when we decided to create Livox.
-
1:50 - 1:52It's a software, a platform,
-
1:52 - 1:57that allows people with disabilities
to communicate, and also learn. -
1:57 - 1:59For the first time in history,
-
1:59 - 2:04artificial intelligence
and contextual awareness was used -
2:04 - 2:11to create intelligent algorithms specially
made for people with disabilities. -
2:11 - 2:13Livox has intelligent algorithms
-
2:13 - 2:17for motor, cognitive
and visual disabilities. -
2:17 - 2:20Regardless of the level of
motor, cognitive or visual disability, -
2:20 - 2:25Livox adjusts itself for each
of these disability types. -
2:27 - 2:29Let me give you an example.
-
2:29 - 2:33Unfortunately, there isn't enough time
to show all the algorithms that Livox has, -
2:33 - 2:37but one of the examples
I can tell you is in relation to touch. -
2:37 - 2:40People with disabilities
cannot touch the tablet like we do. -
2:40 - 2:46They hit the screen,
swipe their hand, touch it incorrectly, -
2:46 - 2:50They cannot aim exactly
where they want to touch. -
2:50 - 2:52This was a very serious problem.
-
2:52 - 2:57So one of Livox algorithms
we created is called Intellitouch, -
2:57 - 3:00If someone without a disability
touches the tablet screen, -
3:00 - 3:04Livox knows that this person
has no disability, and so does nothing. -
3:04 - 3:07But, if a disabled person
touches the tablet screen, -
3:07 - 3:11Livox calculates how many fingers
are touching the screen, for how long, -
3:11 - 3:14if that person is swiping
their hand over it, or not, -
3:14 - 3:19how likely they are to click on a certain
item according to the time and location; -
3:19 - 3:22and it corrects the imperfect touch
of the disabled person. -
3:23 - 3:29One of the most interesting things
in Livox is that you can create profiles. -
3:29 - 3:32I'm also the director
of a large physical therapy clinic -
3:32 - 3:36and we've tested Livox
on thousands of disabled people. -
3:36 - 3:40So we were able
to transform this knowledge, -
3:40 - 3:43this know-how that we have
with disabled people, in algorithms. -
3:43 - 3:46So Livox has been widely used,
for example, in schools. -
3:46 - 3:50Here we can see the profiles.
For example, high-functioning autism, -
3:50 - 3:53Clara Pereira, visual impairment
and cerebral palsy. -
3:53 - 3:55So imagine, for example,
-
3:55 - 3:59teachers who have just got a student
with a disability, who have autism. -
3:59 - 4:01If they select autism in Livox,
-
4:01 - 4:04Livox will adjust for the visual,
cognitive and motor characteristics -
4:04 - 4:06of someone with autism.
-
4:06 - 4:09If they receive another student
with cerebral palsy -
4:09 - 4:12and they select cerebral palsy,
-
4:12 - 4:16Livox will adjust for the visual,
cognitive and motor characteristics -
4:16 - 4:18of someone with cerebral palsy;
-
4:18 - 4:22characteristics which are totally
different from autism, for example. -
4:22 - 4:26There are no limits
of deficiencies for Livox. -
4:26 - 4:32You can create endless diagnostic profiles
for endless types of disabilities. -
4:32 - 4:38Besides communication, disabled people
can do much more through Livox. -
4:38 - 4:42For example, they can play instruments
in music lessons at school. -
4:42 - 4:48They can learn to read, write,
listen to music, watch videos, -
4:48 - 4:53use in therapies, and learn
difficult concepts such as mathematics. -
4:53 - 4:55Now stop and think for a moment.
-
4:55 - 5:01Until recently, these people
couldn't even communicate. -
5:01 - 5:06Imagine the impact
on the daily lives of these people -
5:06 - 5:09now they can do so much more.
-
5:10 - 5:13How many people need Livox?
-
5:13 - 5:17Brazil has about 50 million
people with disabilities. -
5:17 - 5:19Of these 50 million people
with disabilities, -
5:19 - 5:2615 million, which is roughly equivalent
to the population of New York and London, -
5:26 - 5:29are people who need Livox in Brazil.
-
5:29 - 5:32They're people with
cerebral palsy, stroke sequelae, -
5:32 - 5:34amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, autism,
-
5:34 - 5:38and other diseases and deficiencies
that hinder the speech process. -
5:38 - 5:41Now imagine the whole world.
-
5:41 - 5:44According to the World Health Organization
-
5:44 - 5:48there are about one billion people
with disabilities in the world. -
5:48 - 5:52They are the largest
minority in the world. -
5:52 - 5:57We know this, and that's why we created
Livox to speak 25 thousand languages; -
5:57 - 6:02and we already cater for around
10 thousand disabled people in Brazil. -
6:03 - 6:07People always ask me
what I talk about with my daughter. -
6:07 - 6:14We've talked a lot through Livox,
although she can't speak orally. -
6:14 - 6:18People always ask me what she said
that touched me the most. -
6:18 - 6:24This photo is a very recent photo of her,
which was a photo for a document. -
6:24 - 6:27I said to her, "Clara, this is for
a document, a passport. Be serious." -
6:27 - 6:30This was the most serious photo
that we managed from her. -
6:31 - 6:37She's watched all the Disney movies.
Every one of them. -
6:37 - 6:42And through Livox, I asked her
which Disney princess is she; -
6:42 - 6:45after all, this is a fantasy
of every girl. -
6:45 - 6:48Which Disney princess
do you think she said she is? -
6:48 - 6:52Who's going to help me?
You're all too shy! -
6:52 - 6:56Who said Ariel? You got full points!
Very good, she said she was Ariel. -
6:56 - 7:00Has anyone here watched
the Ariel movie? Raise your hands. -
7:00 - 7:03I watched it about 200 times
only yesterday. -
7:04 - 7:09What touched me the most
was why she said she's Ariel. -
7:09 - 7:11I'm going to show a part of the movie
-
7:11 - 7:14which shows a little
why she said she's Ariel. -
7:16 - 7:18(Video) Prince: Oh, I see.
-
7:18 - 7:20(Yapping)
-
7:21 - 7:25Are you OK, miss? I'm sorry
if this knucklehead scared you. -
7:25 - 7:28He's harmless, really...
-
7:29 - 7:35You seem very familiar to me. Have we met?
-
7:35 - 7:37(Yapping)
-
7:37 - 7:41We have met! I knew it!
You're the one I've been looking for! -
7:41 - 7:43What's your name?
-
7:44 - 7:48What's wrong? What is it?
-
7:49 - 7:51Can't you speak?
-
7:52 - 7:56Oh, then you couldn't be who I thought.
-
7:58 - 8:00(Video ends)
-
8:00 - 8:02Carlos Pereira: Amazing, right?
-
8:02 - 8:04She told me she's Ariel,
-
8:04 - 8:09because for most of the time
Ariel doesn't speak in the movie. -
8:10 - 8:15Towards the end of the film some magic
happens that makes Ariel speak again. -
8:15 - 8:20Unfortunately, our lives
aren't like a Walt Disney movie. -
8:20 - 8:24But this doesn't mean
we cannot do certain magical things, -
8:24 - 8:28and we're happy to have created
something magical -
8:28 - 8:30that is giving a voice,
not only to my daughter, -
8:30 - 8:33but also to thousands
of people with disabilities -
8:33 - 8:35throughout Brazil, and the world.
-
8:35 - 8:40When we know what goes on
in our children's minds, -
8:40 - 8:44we can make dreams come true,
and I took her to Disney -
8:44 - 8:47where she met Ariel,
dressed up herself as Ariel. -
8:47 - 8:49Look at her face!
She couldn't believe -
8:49 - 8:54she was finally seeing
the princess she so wants to be. -
8:54 - 8:58She told me afterward
that she had fulfilled a dream -
8:58 - 9:01when finally meeting Ariel.
-
9:02 - 9:05Well, the work we're doing
is of real social inclusion. -
9:05 - 9:10In Brazil alone we've traveled
over 400 thousand kilometers, -
9:10 - 9:12in all the states.
-
9:12 - 9:15That's the equivalent of more than
ten laps around the world. -
9:15 - 9:18I've been here several times
in Rio Grande do Sul, -
9:18 - 9:24in several cities here inside the state,
bringing technology and social inclusion. -
9:25 - 9:28Our work has also
been recognized several times. -
9:28 - 9:31In December 2014, I was in Washington,
-
9:31 - 9:35where we received an award
from the Inter-American Development Bank, -
9:35 - 9:39as the technological innovation
with the greatest impact in 2014. -
9:39 - 9:42Besides this, in February,
we were in Abu Dhabi -
9:42 - 9:46where we received a UN award for the best
social inclusion app in the world. -
9:46 - 9:51We competed along thousands
of apps from 178 countries, -
9:51 - 9:57and were very pleased to bring
this award here to Brazil. -
9:58 - 10:01We also have important partners,
like SAP, for example; -
10:01 - 10:05and we've just closed a joint venture deal
-
10:05 - 10:10with partners of companies
in the Arab League. This is me in Riyadh. -
10:10 - 10:14Livox has already been translated
and localized into Arabic. -
10:14 - 10:17In two weeks' time
I'll be returning to Saudi Arabia -
10:17 - 10:21for a final technical meeting,
and for the deployment -
10:21 - 10:23in the Middle East and North Africa.
-
10:25 - 10:27Google...
-
10:27 - 10:31Google got to know about us,
and sent a team to film our story, -
10:31 - 10:36to show in a global event,
called Google I/O. -
10:36 - 10:41I'd like to show you something
about it in this video. -
10:43 - 10:46[Google I/O. San Francisco,
May 28, 2015] -
10:47 - 10:50[Recife, Brazil]
-
10:50 - 10:55(Video) (English) If you have a good idea,
it doesn't matter where you are. -
10:55 - 11:00We are proving that it's possible to make
money and to make social good as well. -
11:00 - 11:04I met my wife I think 17 to 18 years ago.
-
11:04 - 11:10We did everything that we could
for my wife to have a good pregnancy. -
11:10 - 11:13When my daughter was born, she didn't cry,
-
11:13 - 11:15Something was very wrong.
-
11:15 - 11:17Even though she's disabled,
-
11:17 - 11:20I saw that my daughter
was trying to communicate. -
11:20 - 11:22I needed to do something.
-
11:22 - 11:26I'm a developer,
and that's why I created Livox. -
11:26 - 11:30It's a software that enables
people with severe disabilities -
11:30 - 11:32to communicate and to learn.
-
11:32 - 11:35Through Livox she can read and write.
-
11:36 - 11:40There are over one billion people
with disabilities on the planet. -
11:41 - 11:44Livox is not a product only for Brazil.
-
11:44 - 11:47It's a product for the whole world.
-
11:48 - 11:52[Keep building.]
-
11:56 - 11:58(Applause)
-
11:59 - 12:02(Video) (English)
So those are some powerful stories. -
12:02 - 12:04They are just some small examples
-
12:04 - 12:08of the ways that developers are having
substantial impact around the world. -
12:08 - 12:12We are also excited that Carlos
and his family can join us today! -
12:12 - 12:15(Applause)
-
12:25 - 12:27(Video ends)
-
12:27 - 12:30Carlos Pereira: This was broadcast
live around the world, -
12:30 - 12:37and I'm happy to say that after this
we started a partnership with Google, -
12:37 - 12:40and we're working
with new incredible algorithms -
12:40 - 12:42that will change forever
-
12:42 - 12:45the lives of millions of people
with disabilities around the world. -
12:45 - 12:47And why did Google
call me to go there? -
12:47 - 12:49They wanted to highlight businesses
-
12:49 - 12:53that are making a substantial impact
around the world. -
12:54 - 12:57I'd also like to say that Livox is real.
-
12:57 - 13:00It's not just an idea,
not just a prototype, -
13:00 - 13:03and it's already changing the lives
of thousands of people with disabilities. -
13:03 - 13:07I'd love to tell you
about each of their stories, -
13:07 - 13:12each of these thousands of people;
but unfortunately that's not possible. -
13:12 - 13:13So I'd like to show you
-
13:13 - 13:17the story of three people
with very different disabilities, -
13:17 - 13:22and how Livox
is liberating these people. -
13:22 - 13:24This is the last video.
-
13:26 - 13:29(Video) (English) Although Clara
cannot write by herself, -
13:29 - 13:32through Livox she's succeeded
in writing her first story -
13:32 - 13:34that was published in a book.
-
13:34 - 13:38Maybe she can be a writer in the future.
-
13:40 - 13:43(Livox voice) (English) I'm a doll
that can speak and write. -
13:44 - 13:48(Livox voice) (English) Mouth cancer
did not take away my will to live. -
13:48 - 13:53Livox helped me to overcome
this difficult time of my life. -
13:57 - 14:00(Livox voice) (English) Though my body
is a prison for me, -
14:00 - 14:03I always wanted to be free.
-
14:03 - 14:07With Livox I am able
to make my dreams come true. -
14:07 - 14:10And now...
-
14:10 - 14:11I'm free.
-
14:13 - 14:14(Video ends)
-
14:14 - 14:15CP: Incredible!
-
14:15 - 14:22You allow an eight-year-old girl,
who cannot pick up a pencil and paper, -
14:23 - 14:28to learn to read and write a story
which was published in a book, -
14:28 - 14:30which was the case of my daughter.
-
14:30 - 14:34To allow a person who had mouth cancer,
-
14:34 - 14:39who lost all of his teeth, tongue and jaw,
which can't grow back again, -
14:39 - 14:45to communicate and even attend
his customers by phone through Livox, -
14:45 - 14:50It also allows a man
who uses Livox with his feet, -
14:50 - 14:53who was living a limited life,
to now go out partying, -
14:53 - 14:56to say he wants to have a beer,
-
14:56 - 14:58say that he wants to do a parachute jump
-
14:58 - 15:02and really jump with a parachute,
and experiment a real sense of freedom. -
15:02 - 15:06The change in the life of this man
who parachuted was so big -
15:06 - 15:10that he recently found
a girlfriend and got married. -
15:10 - 15:14So, it's an incredible change
in the lives of these people. -
15:14 - 15:20I'd like to end with a phrase
from the American Senator Daniel Webster, -
15:20 - 15:22when he said:
-
15:22 - 15:27"If all my possessions were taken
from me with one exception, -
15:27 - 15:30I would choose to keep
the power of communication, -
15:30 - 15:33for by it I would soon
regain all the rest." -
15:33 - 15:35Thank you very much.
-
15:35 - 15:37(Applause)

- Technology inspired by the love between father and daughter | Carlos Pereira | TEDxUnisinos
- Description:
-
Clara, a seven-year-old girl, is the great inspiration for her father, computer analyst Carlos Pereira. She has cerebral palsy, and so he developed the world's first app that allows people with a disability to communicate. The project won an award by the United Nations (UN) in Abu Dhabi, and has also been recognized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington, USA.
