The Making of Humans - Stephen Jenkinson

  • 0:06 - 0:09
    Human beings aren't born,
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    human beings are made.
  • 0:44 - 0:51
Look, the ultimate self absorption of our age,
is the self hatred of our age.
  • 0:52 - 0:59
The belief that nothing we can say or do,
can help but screw things up even worse.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
And I think, the reason is, not because there is
something fundamentally wrong with people who look like me:
  • 1:08 - 1:11
It's in the nature of being human
to forget how to be one on occasion.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
It's in the nature of being human
that nobody is born that way.
  • 1:18 - 1:24
Every culture worthy of the word culture
    has always practiced human making.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    I think, without exception.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
It's not like indigenous people are good
people and the rest of us are lost.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
They have the same dilemmas we have.
  • 1:36 - 1:45
They have found a way, an understanding of
being human, that includes the temporary amnesia
    around being one.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
And so, it has to be taught.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
Those are the colours of this time of year.
  • 2:04 - 2:09
If you got haifever your pretty much dead,
but otherwise it's a handsome sight
  • 2:11 - 2:15
And then that ages old view of that
tipi on that little hill there
  • 2:16 - 2:22
This is one of the first places we stayed
when we bought the place, cause we had
    no house or anything
  • 2:22 - 2:27
    You know the beautyful thing,
    sometimes things happen
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    your not looking ..at all
i know wasn' t looking for anything like this
  • 2:31 - 2:35
I naively thought of it thouse days
probalby as some kind of meeting place
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    or some kind of gathering
  • 2:40 - 2:44
where the standart lounges toward sanity
could be somehow replaced by something
  • 2:44 - 2:47
that was a little more akin to leaning

So, five years later, here we are and they are coming, from all over North America.

Young man: Theres a lot of confusion amongst young people, about what they are supposed to do with themselves.
Woman: A constant beneath the surface sense that its not supposed to be like this.
Woman 2: We are taught that we are the problem
Life would be better if there were less humans and maybe no humans.

Humans beings arent born, human beings are made.
And how do you make humans? And the answer is, well you got to kill off their childhood, because, why? Because the childhood doesnt give way, thats why.
And then you need a culture that proceeds as if the greatest gift you can give to kids at a certain age, is give them the chance to be human.
Human beings are here to make sure that life lives, that the world somehow continues
Whether your personal life continues or not, is not the bottom line of it.
And that is the beginning of you growing up.

To see the death of what you love, and to be willing to continue to love it, when its not going to last, that itself is an act of love.
And if what Im talking about is the culture that gave you your existence, your identity, and so forth?
Yeah, thats, thats what you do.
Thats your last great act of love, is to see it, see it down.
That could be part of the story.

Title:
The Making of Humans - Stephen Jenkinson
Description:

The relentless pursuit of self reliance and self improvement is rooted in our lost connection to common stories, homeland and ancestors that bind and unite us. The times now demand that we recognize the world's suffering in our own.
