Late Night Sunday Syndrome | Fabrício Batista | TEDxBrasília
-
0:11 - 0:16My uncle arrived at Brasilia in 1972
with this suitcase here. -
0:16 - 0:18This is all he had.
-
0:18 - 0:21Inside this suitcase,
he had more books than clothes. -
0:21 - 0:24It's funny, but it makes sense,
as this was his project, -
0:24 - 0:27because he came to Brasilia
with a clear goal in mind: -
0:27 - 0:31"I'm going to Brasilia to study and
to succeed in life through my studies." -
0:31 - 0:33That's why he had
so many books in his suitcase. -
0:33 - 0:36After he arrived here,
all my family came too, -
0:36 - 0:39and my mom came to do
the exact same thing as my uncle: -
0:39 - 0:42"I'm going to Brasilia to study
and start a career there." -
0:43 - 0:45All of this happened before I was born.
-
0:45 - 0:48When I was born,
that suitcase was already here. -
0:48 - 0:52The project in that suitcase was a success
both for my uncle and my mom: -
0:52 - 0:54they both studied and succeeded in life.
-
0:54 - 0:57So, natural logic would establish
-
0:57 - 1:00that a project that was a success
for both my uncle and my mom -
1:00 - 1:02would be a success for me too.
-
1:02 - 1:05But when I started school,
I didn't feel well there, -
1:05 - 1:08I wasn't at ease.
-
1:08 - 1:13And since then, I started suffering
from "Late Night Sunday Syndrome", -
1:13 - 1:17an exasperating ghost
that would appear on Sundays and say: -
1:17 - 1:18"Oh, tomorrow is Monday
-
1:18 - 1:21and you'll have to do
something you don't like doing. -
1:21 - 1:25You'll have to carry that suitcase
that you don't want to carry." -
1:26 - 1:30I had this syndrome
for almost my whole student life, -
1:30 - 1:32and for a good deal
of my professional life too. -
1:32 - 1:36To give you an idea,
of every ten people, -
1:36 - 1:38seven suffer from
Late Night Sunday Syndrome. -
1:38 - 1:41And it's very likely
that you have that syndrome too. -
1:42 - 1:43If you suffer from this syndrome,
-
1:43 - 1:47it's because, on Mondays, you are doing
something you don't like doing, -
1:47 - 1:49you are carrying a suitcase
you don't want to carry. -
1:49 - 1:53The first time I got rid of this syndrome
was out of pure luck. -
1:53 - 1:56There was this teacher at my school
-
1:56 - 2:00who made us all do
whatever we liked to do the most, -
2:00 - 2:03and it was amazing
as I ended up enjoying Mondays. -
2:03 - 2:06But I grew up,
and I entered the labor force. -
2:06 - 2:11I became a publicist, and after a while,
the syndrome came back to haunt me, -
2:11 - 2:13and this time it was much worse,
-
2:13 - 2:18as I had a set-up career,
a child to raise, -
2:18 - 2:20and a lot of bills to pay.
-
2:20 - 2:23I had the career I wanted,
the job I wanted, -
2:23 - 2:26and the salary I wanted,
but I wasn't feeling well. -
2:26 - 2:28And the truth is that
it's not all about the career, -
2:28 - 2:31the job or the salary you have.
-
2:31 - 2:33The truth is that,
if you have this syndrome, -
2:33 - 2:36it's because you are carrying
a suitcase you don't want to carry, -
2:36 - 2:39and you are still doing it
because there are bills to pay. -
2:40 - 2:43I want you all to stop
for a moment and think: -
2:43 - 2:46If you didn't have bills to pay,
-
2:46 - 2:48what would you do with your life?
-
2:48 - 2:51Maybe some would say: "God,
I cannot stop and think of this. -
2:51 - 2:53I have so many bills to pay..."
(Laughter) -
2:53 - 2:55Others would say: "I wouldn't do anything.
-
2:55 - 2:58I would travel and watch Netflix
all day, or whatever." -
2:58 - 3:00But just think about this seriously:
-
3:00 - 3:04What would you really spend
your time and energy on? -
3:07 - 3:11If the answer came straight to you,
that's the way out. -
3:11 - 3:14You will put an end
to the Late Night Sunday Syndrome -
3:14 - 3:16as soon as you start
putting this into practice. -
3:18 - 3:21But if the answer didn't come to you,
-
3:21 - 3:23if you haven't come up with it
at that moment, -
3:23 - 3:26you need to find it,
as this is very serious. -
3:26 - 3:28Really, it's a serious matter.
-
3:28 - 3:31It's very likely that, whenever you
find out what you want to do in life, -
3:31 - 3:33you will not know where to start,
-
3:33 - 3:37or maybe you will want to unpack
your suitcase straight away -
3:37 - 3:39and pack it all over again.
-
3:39 - 3:43But this is not the way to make
such an important change in your life. -
3:43 - 3:46You have to change
what's in your suitcase little by little. -
3:47 - 3:52For example, if you like photography,
and you want to become a photographer, -
3:52 - 3:55you need a camera in your suitcase.
-
3:55 - 4:00Of course, you don't need
an entire photography studio. -
4:00 - 4:02You need to make room
for photography in your life. -
4:02 - 4:04If you like to cook,
-
4:04 - 4:07start off with some recipes,
prepare them with your friends, -
4:07 - 4:09start doing this for free,
in the beginning, -
4:09 - 4:12start to experiment, in the beginning,
-
4:12 - 4:14make room for cooking in your life.
-
4:14 - 4:16When you least expect it,
-
4:16 - 4:21your suitcase will be complete
and full of things you decided to pack, -
4:21 - 4:22things that you chose,
-
4:22 - 4:24things that make sense to you,
-
4:24 - 4:27and that will be useful
for other people too. -
4:28 - 4:31My suitcase is very light
and easy to carry. -
4:31 - 4:34What I packed in this suitcase today
is a project that I chose. -
4:34 - 4:36It's not my uncle's project,
nor my mom's, -
4:36 - 4:38not even an advertisement project.
-
4:38 - 4:39It's a project I chose,
-
4:39 - 4:42that involves helping people
find out the things they like to do -
4:42 - 4:45and figure out
how to make a living with it. -
4:45 - 4:49Late night, on Sunday,
you will remember this talk. -
4:49 - 4:52Maybe because you feel good
about Monday coming up, -
4:52 - 4:55and relaxed because you're doing
something you like doing, -
4:55 - 4:59or maybe because the Late Night
Sunday Syndrome haunted you. -
4:59 - 5:02If it's the syndrome,
go repack that suitcase. -
5:02 - 5:03Thank you.
-
5:03 - 5:04(Applause)
-
5:04 - 5:05(Cheering)

- Late Night Sunday Syndrome | Fabrício Batista | TEDxBrasília
- Description:
-
A lot of us cannot wait for the weekend to start, so that we can relax and do whatever we like, isn't it? But later on we start feeling down when Sunday comes to an end and Monday is just around the corner.
Fabrício Batista identified that feeling as "Late Night Sunday Syndrome", and he started questioning the purpose of his life and everything he did. Since then, he decided to give his days new meaning.
