Good news in the fight against pancreatic cancer

  • Not Synced
    By raising your hand,
  • Not Synced
    how many of you know
at least one person on the screen?
  • Not Synced
Wow, it's almost a full house.
  • Not Synced
It;s true, they are very famous
    in their fields.
  • Not Synced
And do you know what all of them
    have in common?
  • Not Synced
They all died of pancreatic cancer.
  • Not Synced
    However, although it's very, very
    sad this news,
  • Not Synced
    it's also thanks to their
    personal story
  • Not Synced
    that we have raised awareness
of how lethal this disease can be.
  • Not Synced
    It was raised to be
the third cause of cancer deaths
  • Not Synced
and only 8 percent of the patients
    will survive beyond five years.
  • Not Synced
    That's a very tiny number,
  • Not Synced
    especially if you compare it
    with breast cancer,
  • Not Synced
where survival rates is almost 90 percent.
  • Not Synced
    So it doesn't really come
    as a surprise
  • Not Synced
    that being diagnosed
    with pancreatic cancer
  • Not Synced
    means facing an enormous
    certain death sentence.
  • Not Synced
    What's shocking, though, is that
    in the last 40 years
  • Not Synced
this number hasn't changed a bit.
  • Not Synced
    While much more progress
has been done for other types of tumors.
  • Not Synced
So how can we make pancreatic cancer
    treatment more effective?
  • Not Synced
    As a biomedical entrepreneur,
  • Not Synced
I like to work on problems
    that seem impossible,
  • Not Synced
    understanding their limitations
    and trying to find
  • Not Synced
    new innovative solutions
    that can change their outcome.
  • Not Synced
The first bad news with pancreatic cancer
  • Not Synced
is that your pancreas is in the middle
    of your belly, literally.
  • Not Synced
    It's depicted in orange
    on the screen.
  • Not Synced
But you can barely see it until
    you remove
  • Not Synced
all of the other organs in front.
  • Not Synced
It's almost surrounded by many other
    vital organs,
  • Not Synced
    like the liver, the stomach,
    the bile duct.
  • Not Synced
And the ability of this tumor to grow into
    these organs
  • Not Synced
is the reason why pancreatic cancer
  • Not Synced
is one of the most painful tumor types.
  • Not Synced
    The hard-to-reach location
    also prevents the doctor
  • Not Synced
    from surgically removing it,
  • Not Synced
    as is routinely done for
    breast cancer, for example.
  • Not Synced
So all of these reasons leaves
as the only option for patient
  • Not Synced
    chemotherapy.
  • Not Synced
This brings us to the second bad news.
  • Not Synced
    Pancreatic cancer tumors have
    very few blood vessels.
  • Not Synced
    So why should we care
about the blood vessel of a tumor?
  • Not Synced
    Let's think for a second
    how chemotherapy works.
  • Not Synced
The drug is injected in the vein
  • Not Synced
and it navigates throughout the body
until it reaches the tumor site.
  • Not Synced
It's like driving on a highway
