Home Studio Portrait Lighting Setup for Beauty Photography
-
0:01 - 0:03Hey photography friend! How is it going?
-
0:03 - 0:05I am Michael Zelbel. I'm still here in Beijng.
-
0:05 - 0:08Today is my last day. Tomorrow I will be flying back to Germany,
-
0:08 - 0:12but today I still have one spontaneous shooting with a new model, Amelia,
-
0:12 - 0:17she just signed up for the model forum three days ago and
-
0:17 - 0:20I thought she got a wonderful face for a couple of portraits
-
0:20 - 0:23and that's what we are going to shoot today: some crazy portraits.
-
0:23 - 0:26It will be very interesting so keep on watching.
-
0:26 - 0:30This lighting setup will be all about flexibility.
-
0:30 - 0:35I didn't really plan the shooting, but I know that I just want to do some simple portrait.
-
0:35 - 0:38But there are so many variations. I dont know the model.
-
0:38 - 0:41I dont know whether face is better from this side or that side,
-
0:41 - 0:46which means: Should have my main light coming from the right or from the left?
-
0:46 - 0:51I don't know whether it's better to have her long black beautiful hair open
-
0:51 - 0:57and probably place it in front of a black background or whether we should tie it up
-
0:57 - 1:04and place her in front of a white background, we will try out and learn.
-
1:04 - 1:07For that I need a really, really flexible setup.
-
1:07 - 1:08And this is what I am going to do:
-
1:08 - 1:14I will use two speedlights as my main light sources.
-
1:14 - 1:24This is speed light A, and I will have the model sitting over here,
-
1:24 - 1:34and I will have the speedlight a bit higher coming from this side. Like this.
-
1:34 - 1:43Just above the table at a 45 degrees angle. That's speedlight A.
-
1:43 - 1:48The same on the other side with speed light B.
-
1:48 - 1:57The good thing with those speedlights is,
-
1:57 - 2:04that I can control them from the camera or from the on-camera flash.
-
2:04 - 2:07I can control which one of those is my main light.
-
2:07 - 2:16I just have to dial one control and say the ratio is now 2:1,
-
2:16 - 2:19so two times the amount of light from here and one time the amount from the left.
-
2:19 - 2:24When I tell her to turn her nose to this side, then I just have to dial
-
2:24 - 2:29two time the amount of light from here and one time the amount of filling light from over there,
-
2:29 - 2:33In just on second I can change the position of my main light.
-
2:33 - 2:36I will shoot from over there to over here.
-
2:36 - 2:44I need to fill in from below, and for that I just put some white towel ontop of the table.
-
2:44 - 2:48This will reflect a decent amount of light.
-
2:48 - 2:54Voilà! Beauty light from all sides and nothing can go wrong.
-
2:54 - 2:57ETTL - Even I cannot mess it up!
-
2:57 - 3:02Good, now the background! Over here I have got windows.
-
3:02 - 3:10I can let down the curtains and then it's a bright background, creamy white.
-
3:10 - 3:14It's a really bright one, which would need some more light to appear pure white.
-
3:14 - 3:17Or I want to have it black. Black is very simple.
-
3:17 - 3:20I've got my big reflector.
-
3:20 - 3:29I just put it over here, lean it against a chair,
-
3:29 - 3:32and when I shout from over there, then now I have got a black background.
-
3:32 - 3:36Since she has got black hair and probably I will have her wearing a black hat,
-
3:36 - 3:51I will need some head light and for that I will use another little speed light.
-
3:51 - 4:00I will hang it under the ceiling and zoom it to 105mm,
-
4:00 - 4:06so it's emitting a very directed beam of light.
-
4:06 - 4:17I will hang it this way around, right over here so that it will just hit her head over here.
-
4:17 - 4:20In case I want to have the bright background,
-
4:20 - 4:32I just have to remove this reflector, turn this speedlight around,
-
4:32 - 4:42pull out the built in diffuser so that it zooms out to 14 mm.
-
4:42 - 4:46Then it's emitting a very broad cone of light
-
4:46 - 4:49to the whole window wall over there.
-
4:49 - 4:52When I now shoot her against the light,
-
4:52 - 4:54then this will be brightened by this speedlight.
-
4:54 - 4:58It's set to group C, so I can control it from the camera.
-
4:58 - 5:06To brighten up the wall I would probably dial to plus +1, overexpose the wall by one f-stop.
-
5:06 - 5:11To have just a bit of delineation in the hair I would set it to -3,
-
5:11 - 5:14to have just a little it of light over here.
-
5:14 - 5:18It's just a matter of two seconds to change the setup.
-
5:18 - 5:24Okay, now we can try out lots of things within a few minutes. Let's do so.
-
6:07 - 6:09There you have it.
-
6:09 - 6:12Just a little portrait shooting, but with quite some variation.
-
6:12 - 6:18The speedlights, especially the ETTL element of the speedlights,
-
6:18 - 6:22was quite helpful. It makes it a whole lot faster.
-
6:22 - 6:27So I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you have fun with your shoots!
-
6:27 - 6:29I hope to see you soon!
-
6:29 - 6:32Until then, I wish you good light!
-
6:32 - 6:35Bye bye

- Description:
-
http://SmokingStrobes.com - In this video you will learn about a very flexible portrait lighting setup. It works with a bright background as well as with a dark background. For this lighting setup you only need 3 speedlights and shoot through umbrellas. This lighting setup produces classic beauty portraits like you need for magazine shoots and for skin care advertisements. By balancing the light left and right you can choose how much you want the features of your model stand out or being flattened by even, frontal light. This is one of my favorite lighting setups. Let me know below the video what you think about it.
