0:24 - 0:27This idea that our lives' outlines
-
0:27 - 0:31are probably wider
than what we can imagine. -
0:32 - 0:37The idea, for example,
that we always have time to do things. -
0:37 - 0:38That is rare.
-
0:39 - 0:41Or that our bodies move freely.
-
0:42 - 0:45The idea of freedom
where absolutely everything is possible. -
0:47 - 0:50That is a subject
that has always inspired me, -
0:50 - 0:55and that is why I have lived
in a zen monastery for 15 years. -
0:57 - 1:02There, I learned a lot, in particular
thanks to zen master Oliver Wang-Genh. -
1:02 - 1:07It would take an entire TEDx for me
to tell you how I barged in -
1:07 - 1:09everything that happened;
-
1:09 - 1:11living in a monastery
is something really peculiar. -
1:12 - 1:17But today, I mostly want
to share with you three key lessons. -
1:18 - 1:21Three significant experiences
-
1:21 - 1:26that allowed me to find
some kind of inner peace. -
1:27 - 1:33I called the first lesson,
"The little bird from the Rising Sun." -
1:33 - 1:35That's my poetic side!
-
1:36 - 1:38The story takes place in Japan
-
1:38 - 1:41where I threw myself, head first,
-
1:41 - 1:45in the adventure
of a traditional zen retreat. -
1:45 - 1:49It was in 2008, I landed in Nagoya,
-
1:49 - 1:53in a nuns monastery
from which, according to the legend, -
1:53 - 1:59most of Western nuns leave
as soon as they arrive. -
2:00 - 2:04As a matter of fact,
the conditions are very ascetic. -
2:04 - 2:06There is no modern comfort.
-
2:07 - 2:10There is no hot water,
you do everything with cold water, -
2:10 - 2:15my hands are going to discover
what crevices and frostbites are. -
2:16 - 2:19It is the middle of winter,
and there is no heating. -
2:20 - 2:22Lots of promiscuity among people,
-
2:22 - 2:28we have a 10 square meters room
shared by six or seven people. -
2:28 - 2:31Sustained activity all day long.
-
2:31 - 2:36That is not that kind of zen,
but it goes extremely fast! -
2:36 - 2:38All of it happening in Japanese,
-
2:38 - 2:42a language I only understand
from Knights of the Zodiac. -
2:42 - 2:45(Laughter)
-
2:45 - 2:47I am a bit lost there.
-
2:47 - 2:51That is the aim
of this very precious lesson: -
2:51 - 2:55push us to the limits
until we have to let go. -
2:55 - 2:58After three weeks, my letting go
-
2:58 - 3:05is that I am fed up, this is too much!
-
3:06 - 3:09One morning, in this monastery,
-
3:09 - 3:12all on my own,
with no contact with Europe, -
3:12 - 3:14I decide to leave.
-
3:15 - 3:22That day, in me, is a huge disappointment.
-
3:22 - 3:26I had put so much hope in this journey.
-
3:27 - 3:32And here I am, with knots in my stomach.
-
3:33 - 3:36I gather my stuff in the room,
I am on my own. -
3:38 - 3:40At some point, I look up, like that.
-
3:42 - 3:45Through the window,
-
3:46 - 3:52I notice a branch, covered in snow,
and on top of it, a little bird. -
3:55 - 3:59It is so... delicate!
-
3:59 - 4:00It is so beautiful!
-
4:01 - 4:05It shakes itself to smooth its feathers.
-
4:05 - 4:08And for me, at that moment,
-
4:08 - 4:12the feeling of resentment
and disappointment gives way to awe -
4:12 - 4:15as I face its magnificence!
-
4:17 - 4:21A wave of tenderness comes
rushing from deep within. -
4:22 - 4:24What if that was the teaching
-
4:24 - 4:27I had traveled 10,000 kilometers for?
-
4:28 - 4:34Feelings and thoughts,
in general, are impermanent. -
4:35 - 4:39They appear, and can also disappear.
-
4:39 - 4:40One moment there is anger,
-
4:40 - 4:46the next there is awe
as I face the magnificence of the world. -
4:47 - 4:51I think we all have experienced it
during our daily lives. -
4:51 - 4:52For example at work,
-
4:52 - 4:58one colleague annoys us,
we are in conflict, we dwell on it, -
4:58 - 5:02then if we get a call from a friend
who tells us a joke, -
5:02 - 5:04all of a sudden, we burst out laughing.
-
5:05 - 5:11This ability is the first lesson:
feelings are impermanent, -
5:11 - 5:13a little bird told me.
-
5:15 - 5:20The second lesson is a bit different;
-
5:21 - 5:23I called it, "What's in my head?"
-
5:25 - 5:26I won't tell you everything!
-
5:26 - 5:28(Laughter)
-
5:28 - 5:35It is this idea that for feelings
to appear, and more importantly disappear, -
5:35 - 5:37we shouldn't dwell on them.
-
5:38 - 5:41In general, we tend to get relive it.
-
5:42 - 5:45Something happens that we don't like,
and then we brood. -
5:45 - 5:49We all kind of work that way,
that's natural. -
5:49 - 5:51But in order to stop brooding,
-
5:51 - 5:55we need to understand,
to realize what we are doing! -
5:56 - 6:01And so, we need to know better
what is inside our heads. -
6:01 - 6:04What's in my head?
-
6:05 - 6:09I experienced it once
when I was seated, mediating, -
6:10 - 6:13as Buddha, peacefully
- I could not do it - -
6:16 - 6:17and at that moment, the master said,
-
6:18 - 6:24"Let your thoughts and feelings pass by
as clouds in the sky." -
6:26 - 6:30It was beautiful,
and it made me terribly angry! -
6:30 - 6:33Because my feelings were not
-
6:33 - 6:37"some small, peaceful misty clouds
in a deep blue sky," -
6:38 - 6:43but rather some big, black,
dense cumulonimbus -
6:43 - 6:45that tended to stagnate.
-
6:46 - 6:49I looked like a peaceful Buddha,
but on the inside, I was seething. -
6:49 - 6:54I was really motivated to achieve it,
-
6:54 - 6:57so I studied a lot, and today,
-
6:57 - 7:00I want to allow you to save some time.
-
7:00 - 7:02(Laughter)
-
7:02 - 7:07I would like to propose
a small exercise, right now. -
7:08 - 7:09Are you OK with that?
-
7:09 - 7:10Audience: Yes!
-
7:11 - 7:17KT: Sit comfortably in your chairs.
That is a short moment of relaxation. -
7:20 - 7:24You will be able to study,
to discover with passion -
7:24 - 7:27what is in your heads and in your bodies.
-
7:28 - 7:30Now close your eyes.
-
7:31 - 7:38Focus on the contact
between your body and the chair. -
7:38 - 7:42Become aware that you are here,
seated, in this room, at this moment: -
7:42 - 7:44that is the present moment.
-
7:44 - 7:45Where are we right now?
-
7:48 - 7:51Then, you can explore,
-
7:51 - 7:55become Indiana Jones in your mind.
-
7:57 - 8:04I will guide so that you know
what forms your thoughts can take. -
8:05 - 8:10You might have thoughts
in the form of pictures, -
8:13 - 8:16as a movie that takes place inside of you,
-
8:17 - 8:19or light that flashes,
-
8:19 - 8:23or a memory of the place where you are,
-
8:23 - 8:27or of the person
who is currently speaking. -
8:27 - 8:30That is called
a visual mental representation. -
8:34 - 8:37For other people, there might be sounds.
-
8:38 - 8:42And what we call
"the little voice in your head." -
8:43 - 8:44Sometimes, it is talkative,
-
8:44 - 8:46it is a little voice
-
8:46 - 8:52that comments, tells, analyzes,
says parts of sentences, -
8:52 - 8:54and sometimes sings on the inside.
-
8:56 - 9:00The little voice in the head,
that is the inner dialogue. -
9:03 - 9:04What's in your head?
-
9:06 - 9:07Pictures?
-
9:09 - 9:11A little voice?
-
9:13 - 9:18The last form of thinking
is called kinesthetic, -
9:18 - 9:22this is all the feelings
we have in our bodies. -
9:24 - 9:29For example, hot, cold,
the contact with the chair, -
9:29 - 9:31heavy, light.
-
9:32 - 9:36But also the all range of emotions
-
9:37 - 9:40that we feel in our bodies.
-
9:40 - 9:42Joy, anger, sadness, and the rest.
-
9:45 - 9:47Three possible form of thinking.
-
9:47 - 9:49In one moment, you will open your eyes,
-
9:49 - 9:53and you will know more
about how you function inside. -
9:53 - 9:56Do you mostly see pictures,
-
9:56 - 10:01hear a little voice, feel emotions,
or a physical sensation, and so on? -
10:03 - 10:06This is really pleasant, but...
-
10:06 - 10:08You can now open your eyes!
-
10:08 - 10:12You have new knowledge
about yourself, that's a first step. -
10:15 - 10:16This is interesting to know,
-
10:16 - 10:19because you can better observe
your functioning. -
10:21 - 10:25Each one of you can do it
at any moment during the day. -
10:26 - 10:32Then, there was the third lesson.
-
10:33 - 10:35I discovered it by chance.
-
10:35 - 10:39I called it, "the periscope,"
you will soon find out why. -
10:39 - 10:43I discovered it earlier on, in 2003.
-
10:43 - 10:49In 2003, I was performing
in French music concerts -
10:49 - 10:50for American people,
-
10:53 - 10:57in front of audiences
of around 150 or 200 people. -
10:58 - 11:02During the first concert, I got on stage,
-
11:02 - 11:05like that, exactly like tonight,
-
11:05 - 11:08but I didn't have
the same clothes or the same haircut. -
11:09 - 11:10(Laughter)
-
11:10 - 11:16Then I start singing in that repertoire,
and then... stage fright! -
11:16 - 11:19My legs are shaking, my heart is pounding,
-
11:20 - 11:24all the symptoms of stage fright
appear all of a sudden. -
11:25 - 11:29Fortunately, at that time,
I already meditated a lot. -
11:29 - 11:32As all of this occurred,
-
11:33 - 11:37some kind of observing conscience appeared
-
11:37 - 11:41spontaneously and automatically.
-
11:41 - 11:44What I mean is, I am singing,
-
11:44 - 11:48I feel the stage fright inside of my body,
-
11:48 - 11:50some symptoms.
-
11:50 - 11:51And at the same time,
-
11:52 - 11:57there is a conscience that allows me
to keep my head above water. -
11:57 - 12:02My head is free,
I can go on with my concert. -
12:02 - 12:05Imagine, I start singing
and then stage fright. -
12:06 - 12:09(Sings "La vie en rose")
-
12:18 - 12:20And at the same time, it is observing.
-
12:21 - 12:25That is the witness-conscience,
the observing conscience. -
12:25 - 12:31It observes the feeling
and, as it is observed - it's magical! - -
12:31 - 12:34the feeling eases off!
-
12:35 - 12:37You just have to observe it
-
12:37 - 12:43for the unpleasant feelings to gradually
appear, and then naturally disappear, -
12:43 - 12:45like what I was telling you
in the beginning. -
12:47 - 12:50I called it "the periscope."
-
12:50 - 12:55You all know the Grey rod,
that is on top of submarines, -
12:55 - 13:00that can come out of water,
like a duck, to observe the landscape. -
13:02 - 13:06With that kind of conscience,
we are both in and out of the water, -
13:06 - 13:10we are both connected
and dissociated from the experience, -
13:10 - 13:13both inside and outside.
-
13:13 - 13:19This means that we are very alive,
we feel things completely, -
13:19 - 13:22because we do not want to become robots!
-
13:22 - 13:27But our heads are free
and we feel relief deep inside of us. -
13:28 - 13:32This was the third significant event
of the past few years. -
13:32 - 13:37The first: feelings appear
and disappear naturally. -
13:38 - 13:41The second: we can know
-
13:41 - 13:46what form our thoughts and feelings take:
-
13:47 - 13:50visual, auditory
- the little voice in the head - -
13:50 - 13:53or kinesthetic -
the sensations of the body. -
13:53 - 13:57The third: it is possible to discover
-
13:57 - 14:01this wonderful observing conscience,
witness-conscience, -
14:01 - 14:06that allows us to be present
and fully free. -
14:07 - 14:08Isn't it neat?
-
14:09 - 14:10(Laughter)
-
14:10 - 14:11It is not over yet!
-
14:11 - 14:16To conclude, I want to propose
a small ritual for the day. -
14:18 - 14:22Or rather a small ritual for the morning,
as morning is a key moment, -
14:22 - 14:24that will allow you to implement,
-
14:24 - 14:28or even incarnate
these three things in one exercise. -
14:29 - 14:30Are you up for it?
-
14:30 - 14:31Audience: Yes!
-
14:32 - 14:34KT: Imagine yourself in the morning.
-
14:35 - 14:37The alarm goes off.
-
14:39 - 14:44Generally, you snooze it, once, twice...
-
14:44 - 14:46And at some point, you have to get up.
-
14:47 - 14:49At that point, what I propose is,
-
14:50 - 14:53either while lying down,
or you might sit on the side of the bed, -
14:53 - 14:56what I propose that can change lives
-
14:56 - 15:01is to become aware
of your first thought in the morning! -
15:03 - 15:04That's it.
-
15:04 - 15:09Is it a picture,
a little voice in your head, -
15:10 - 15:14a feeling, or a sensation in your body?
-
15:14 - 15:17Then do it with the second
and the third thoughts. -
15:18 - 15:25At that moment, naturally,
you will change your habits; -
15:25 - 15:30you will become aware of this hum,
this windmill in your head. -
15:31 - 15:36What is wonderful is that,
at this point, you get up, -
15:36 - 15:39not as a robot anymore,
going to the coffee machine, -
15:39 - 15:42not fully awake.

15:42 - 15:44You get up mindful!
-
15:45 - 15:48You find this freedom inside of you again.
-
15:48 - 15:52Not as a robot anymore,
but as an actor of your daily life. -
15:52 - 15:57This is the source - trust me -
of an immense inner relief. -
15:57 - 16:03And you know that during the day to come,
everything is possible! -

"They didn't know it was impossible, and so they did it." For 15 years, Kankyo Tannier has been guiding her students toward the discovery of the spoken, sung and inner voices. Ordained Zen nun in 2003, her Japanese retreat in ascetic conditions leads her to get involved in the French Buddhist Union, under the ferrule of her master Olivier Reigen Wang-Genh. Since 2013, she hosts a website, www.dailyzen.fr, whose mission is to present buddhism through humor. In 2016, Kankyo settles down in the middle of a forest, near the buddhist monastery of Weiterswiller, in Alsace. She is passionate about surpassesing herself through her training in Ericksonian hypnosis.
