Detective work for younger mysteries | Vesa-Pekka Karinen | TEDxOtaniemi
-
0:14 - 0:16For the past year
-
0:16 - 0:18I have been working in a detective agency.
-
0:19 - 0:21And I'd like to share a story with you
-
0:21 - 0:23of one case we had
in our detective agency. -
0:24 - 0:26Our detective agency has become
-
0:27 - 0:31one of those agencies that
gets the oldest cases around. -
0:31 - 0:35In this case that I am going
to share with you was no exception. -
0:35 - 0:38Everything you are about to hear
happen in Helsinski -
0:38 - 0:40during the Spring of 2016
-
0:42 - 0:45It all got started when our boss
-
0:45 - 0:48sent us a weird short clue from Jyväskylä.
-
0:49 - 0:51It has only three words in it.
-
0:51 - 0:52(Image)
-
0:52 - 0:55[BERTEL LILJEQUIST PAAVALI]
-
0:56 - 0:59First we were baffled by his message.
-
0:59 - 1:01What are we supposed
to do with this information? -
1:01 - 1:03So we had a meeting,
we sat around -
1:03 - 1:06trying to remember anything
related to these three words. -
1:06 - 1:10We knew there was a church called Paavali
in Vaakuna, Helsinki, -
1:11 - 1:12but that was about it.
-
1:14 - 1:17Finally, one of my colleagues
blurted out the obvious: -
1:17 - 1:20Just put those three words
to the search engine. -
1:20 - 1:22And we did that.
-
1:22 - 1:24And the very first results
-
1:24 - 1:26Paavalinkirkko in Helsinki
-
1:26 - 1:28or St Paul's Church in Helsinski.
-
1:30 - 1:32So what did we do with this information?
-
1:32 - 1:34We planned our operation.
-
1:34 - 1:36We checked the route to the church.
-
1:36 - 1:39We packed all our cool gadgets and gear.
-
1:39 - 1:41And a little bit of snack and off we went
-
1:41 - 1:43snooping in the Church.
-
1:43 - 1:46In the church we met helpful priest.
-
1:46 - 1:49He was happy to show us around
and answer all our questions. -
1:50 - 1:53And during all that conversations
and questions -
1:53 - 1:55we managed to find something
-
1:55 - 1:58that didn't quite seem
to belong to the church. -
1:58 - 2:01It was a tiny old wrinkly paper scroll.
-
2:01 - 2:03And when open up,
-
2:03 - 2:05seems to be a part of a bigger map.
-
2:05 - 2:08At this point some of my colleagues
just went crazy. -
2:08 - 2:11We never had a case like this before.
-
2:12 - 2:13All I know
-
2:13 - 2:16we got three more clues.
-
2:16 - 2:19similar kinds of clues
that all took us to villages' sights. -
2:20 - 2:21The second one
-
2:22 - 2:23had two words.
-
2:23 - 2:24(image)
-
2:24 - 2:26[AHRENBERG NARINKKA]
-
2:27 - 2:29You know what I am guessing?
-
2:29 - 2:32This took us to the Helsinki synagogue.
-
2:32 - 2:35And the third one had even numbers in it.
-
2:35 - 2:36(Image)
-
2:36 - 2:38[1862 1868 Gornostajev]
-
2:39 - 2:44This took us to that beautiful
Uspenskin Katedraali in Helskinski -
2:45 - 2:47In both of these places
we found another map. -
2:49 - 2:53The fourth clue would have
taken us to Jyväskylä, -
2:53 - 2:55The Muslim prayer house.
-
2:55 - 2:57That was too far for us,
-
2:57 - 2:58so we ask our boss in Jyväskylä
-
2:58 - 3:01If she could do the snooping for us.
-
3:01 - 3:02Luckily she could,
-
3:03 - 3:05And she managed to find
that fourth missing piece. -
3:07 - 3:09When we combined those four pieces,
-
3:09 - 3:12we found that it formed
a map of Suomenlinna. -
3:12 - 3:16This old fortress island
off the coast of Helsinki. -
3:16 - 3:18And what is even more exciting,
-
3:18 - 3:21on the fourth map there was
this big red X-mark -
3:22 - 3:25right on the Kuninkaanportti,
the King's Gate there as well. -
3:28 - 3:29But at this point
-
3:29 - 3:32I will let one of my colleagues
tell you what happens next. -
3:33 - 3:34(Video)
-
3:34 - 3:38[ Well, we kind of made the first map.]
-
3:39 - 3:45[ And then with the help of the map
we went to the King's Gate] -
3:45 - 3:54[Then, at the King's Gate,
we found the key from the moat] -
3:56 - 3:58[ Who found it?]
-
3:58 - 3:59[Girl: I did!]
-
3:59 - 4:01[ Where did you find it from? ]
-
4:01 - 4:03[From a rock, it was attached to it.]
-
4:03 - 4:05[ So how did it feel like? ]
-
4:05 - 4:06[ Exciting ]
-
4:07 - 4:10[ I remember a little girl
who was quite thrilled.] -
4:10 - 4:11[ (Laughter) ]
-
4:12 - 4:13[ It was exciting, right? ]
-
4:13 - 4:14[Girl: Yes ]
-
4:15 - 4:19[ I was really wondering,
where does the key belong to? ] -
4:19 - 4:21[ And we never found it out. ]
-
4:21 - 4:22Yeah.
-
4:23 - 4:25My colleagues are a little bit younger.
-
4:25 - 4:27In fact I have a confession to make:
-
4:27 - 4:29those are my pupils in our pre-school.
-
4:29 - 4:31I am a pre-school teacher.
-
4:32 - 4:36And we had a detective agency
called Leopardit or Leopards. -
4:37 - 4:38And,
-
4:39 - 4:43we are three educators and free thinkers.
-
4:45 - 4:49We had this detective agency running
throughout the school year. -
4:50 - 4:52with different kind of cases,
-
4:52 - 4:55and different kind of
or different learning objectives. -
4:57 - 4:59But you might still be wondering why?
-
5:00 - 5:02What happens to that key we found?
-
5:02 - 5:05For all of you English speakers,
we found a key, old looking key. -
5:05 - 5:07What happened to that key?
-
5:07 - 5:08What was it for?
-
5:08 - 5:11Well we took it to the national museum
-
5:11 - 5:14because it was, looked really old,
to get it evaluated. -
5:14 - 5:16We still haven't heard back
from the museum, -
5:16 - 5:18but I am sure we will soon.
-
5:18 - 5:20and maybe the next year's detectives
-
5:20 - 5:22want to find out what that key opens.
-
5:22 - 5:25What else there is still to be found.
-
5:26 - 5:27So,
-
5:28 - 5:30why did I want to share
this story with you? -
5:30 - 5:33We knew that adventure
is a great tool for learning. -
5:34 - 5:40And with this exciting narrative running
throughout the school year, -
5:41 - 5:46we managed to get a lot of
learning objectives fulfilled. -
5:46 - 5:50For example, we met a lot of
new letters, new numbers. -
5:51 - 5:53And we even managed to read maps.
-
5:54 - 5:56We got to know our city better.
-
5:57 - 5:58And most importantly,
-
5:59 - 6:02most importantly we got
to know ourself better. -
6:02 - 6:06Because we have to remember that preschool
isn't just about academic skills -
6:06 - 6:07It's about growing.
-
6:07 - 6:09It's about learning about yourself,
-
6:09 - 6:10how to take care of yourself.
-
6:11 - 6:15Having success in an adventure like we did
-
6:15 - 6:17builds that confidence.
-
6:17 - 6:20that inner feeling that you are
going to get through no matter what. -
6:21 - 6:23And come that first school day:
-
6:23 - 6:25with new teachers, new classmates,
-
6:25 - 6:26new school, new everything.
-
6:27 - 6:29And with that same confidence
-
6:29 - 6:31they faced the King's Gate
in Suomenlinna. -
6:32 - 6:32Thank you.
-
6:33 - 6:35(Applause)
