The little problem I had renting a house

  • Not Synced
    An 18-year-old, African-American male
joined the United States Air Force
  • Not Synced
and was assigned to Mountain Home
    Air Force Base
  • Not Synced
and was a part of the air police squadron.
  • Not Synced
Upon first arriving there, the first goal
that I had was to identify an apartment,
  • Not Synced
    or find an apartment,
  • Not Synced
so I could bring my wife and my new
baby, Melanie, out to join me.
  • Not Synced
I immediately went to the personnel office,
  • Not Synced
and talking with the guys in personnel,
  • Not Synced
they said, "Hey, no problem finding an
    apartment in Mountain Home, Idaho.
  • Not Synced
The people down there love us because
they know they have an airmen
  • Not Synced
who is coming in to rent one of their
    apartments--they'll always get their money."
  • Not Synced
And that was a really important thing.
  • Not Synced
He said, "So here is a list of people
    that you can call,
  • Not Synced
and then they will allow you to select
    the apartment that you want."
  • Not Synced
So I got the list, I made the call.
  • Not Synced
The lady answered on the other end
and I told her what I wanted.
  • Not Synced
She said, "Oh, great you called. We have
four or five apartments available right now."
  • Not Synced
She said, "Do you want a one bedroom
    or two bedroom?"
  • Not Synced
Then she said, "Let's not talk about that.
  • Not Synced
Just come on down, select the apartment
    that you want.
  • Not Synced
We'll sign the contract and you'll have
keys in your hand to get
  • Not Synced
your family out here right away."
  • Not Synced
    So I was excited.
  • Not Synced
I jumped in my car. I went downtown
    and knocked on the door.
  • Not Synced
When I knocked on the door, the woman
    came to the door,
  • Not Synced
and she looked at me, and she said,
  • Not Synced
    "Can I help you?"
  • Not Synced
I said, "Yes, I'm the person who called
    about the apartments.
  • Not Synced
I was just coming down to
    make my selection."
  • Not Synced
She said, "You know what? I'm really sorry,
but my husband rented those apartments
  • Not Synced
and didn't tell me about them."
  • Not Synced
I said, "You mean he rented all five
    of them in one hour?"
  • Not Synced
She didn't give me a response,
  • Not Synced
and what she said was this,
  • Not Synced
she said, "Why don't you leave your number,
  • Not Synced
and if we have some openings,
    I'll give you a call."
  • Not Synced
Needless to say, I did not get
    a call from her.
  • Not Synced
Nor did I get any responses from
    the other people
  • Not Synced
that they gave me on the list
    where I could get apartments.
  • Not Synced
So as a result of that, and feeling rejected,
  • Not Synced
I went back to the base, and I talked
    to the squadron commander.
  • Not Synced
His name was McDow, Major McDow.
  • Not Synced
I said, "Major McDow, I need your help."
  • Not Synced
I told him what happened, and here's
    what he said to me,
  • Not Synced
"James, I would love to help you.
  • Not Synced
    But you know, the problem:
  • Not Synced
we can't make people rent to folks
that they don't want to rent to.
  • Not Synced
And besides, we have a great relationship
    with people in the community
  • Not Synced
and we really don't want to damage that."
  • Not Synced
He said, "So maybe this is what you should do.
  • Not Synced
Why don't you let your family stay home,
  • Not Synced
because you do know that you get
    a 30-day leave.
  • Not Synced
So once a year, you can go home
    to your family,
  • Not Synced
spend 30 days and then come on back."
  • Not Synced
    Needless to say, that didn't
    resonate for me.
  • Not Synced
So after leaving him, I went
    back to personnel,
  • Not Synced
    and talking to the clerk,
  • Not Synced
he said, "Jim, I think I have a
    solution for you.
  • Not Synced
There's an airmen who is leaving
    and he has a trailer,
  • Not Synced
if you notice in Mountain Home,
  • Not Synced
there are trailer parks and trailers
    all over the place.
  • Not Synced
You can buy his trailer, and you
    could probably get
  • Not Synced
a really good deal because he wants
to get out of town as soon as possible,
  • Not Synced
and that would take care of your problem
  • Not Synced
and that would provide the solution for you."
  • Not Synced
So I immediately jumped in my car,
  • Not Synced
    went downtown, saw the trailer
  • Not Synced
-- it was a small trailer.
  • Not Synced
    But under the circumstances,
    I figured that that was
  • Not Synced
the best thing that I could do.
  • Not Synced
    So I bought the trailer.
  • Not Synced
    And then I asked him,
  • Not Synced
Can I just leave the trailer here?
  • Not Synced
And that would take care of all my problems,
  • Not Synced
I wouldn't have to find another trailer park."
  • Not Synced
He said, "Before I say yes to that, I need
    to check with management."
  • Not Synced
So I get back to the base,
  • Not Synced
he called me back and management said,
  • Not Synced
"No, you can't leave the trailer here
  • Not Synced
because we had promised that slot
    to some other people."
  • Not Synced
And that was strange to me because
    there were several other slots
  • Not Synced
    that were open,
  • Not Synced
but it just so happened that he had
promised that slot to someone else.
  • Not Synced
    So, what I did
  • Not Synced
-- and he said, "You shouldn't worry, Jim,
  • Not Synced
because there are a lot of trailer parks--
  • Not Synced
So I put out another exhaustive list
    of going to trailer parks.
  • Not Synced
I went to one after another,
    after another.
  • Not Synced
And I got the same kind of rejection there
    that I received
  • Not Synced
when I was looking for the apartment.
  • Not Synced
And as a result, the kind of comments
    that they made to me,
  • Not Synced
in addition to saying that they
    didn't have any slots open,
  • Not Synced
one person said, "Jim, the reason
why we can't rent to you,
  • Not Synced
we already have a negro family
    in the trailer park."
  • Not Synced
He said, "And it's not me, because
    I like you people."
  • Not Synced
    (Laugher)
  • Not Synced
And that's what I did, too,
    I chucked, right?
  • Not Synced
He said, "But here's the problem:
  • Not Synced
If I let you in, the other tenants
    will move out
  • Not Synced
and I can't afford to take
    that kind of a hit."
  • Not Synced
He said, "I just can't rent to you."
  • Not Synced
    Even though that was discouraging,
    it didn't stop me.
  • Not Synced
    I kept looking,
  • Not Synced
and I looked at the far end
of the town in Mountain Home,
  • Not Synced
and there was a small trailer park.
  • Not Synced
I mean, a really small trailer park.
  • Not Synced
It didn't have any paved roads in it,
  • Not Synced
it didn't have the concrete slabs,
  • Not Synced
it didn't have fencing to portion out
your trailer slot from other trailer slots.
  • Not Synced
    It didn't have
