Why I advocate The Zeitgeist Movement, response to common criticisms - Federico Pistono, Italy
-
0:00 - 0:05ALL IMPERSONATIONS ON THIS VIDEO ARE BASED ON ACTUAL CRITICISMS I HEARD FROM PEOPLE
-
0:05 - 0:09Since I was a kid,
i used to look at the world, -
0:09 - 0:13and you know, ask myself questions and...
-
0:13 - 0:16Yeah... Questions!
Questions... -
0:16 - 0:19Questions need answers!
And think! Think! -
0:19 - 0:23Please, don't, I don't... I don't wanna think!
I just... Don't wanna think! -
0:23 - 0:25Don't bother thinking!
''It's useless!'' -
0:25 - 0:29I've been thinking, you know!
I've been thinking and, -
0:29 - 0:31if you are like me,
you walk down the street, -
0:31 - 0:33and you see things not working, like:
-
0:33 - 0:36Poor people!
You see poor people on the street, -
0:36 - 0:40dying of hunger, cold, dehydration, and...
-
0:41 - 0:45And you kind of wonder Why?
''Why is this happening?'' -
0:45 - 0:47''It's human nature and those
people deserve to be there!'' -
0:48 - 0:52Ok, wait a minute...
If fits, people in the society, -
0:52 - 0:55and, this people don't fit,
-
0:55 - 0:57there must be a reason,
and the reason, -
0:57 - 0:59must be connected to society, you know,
-
0:59 - 1:02how it works, how it's designed to work.
-
1:02 - 1:04And, if it's designed not to work,
-
1:04 - 1:08or just to work for someone,
then it's not really a fair society! Is it? -
1:08 - 1:12''Oh, you can never fix society,
you're too small!'' -
1:12 - 1:14''You're just one!
Who do you think you are?!'' -
1:14 - 1:16''You don't count for shit!''
-
1:16 - 1:19''The only time you count is when
you turn 18 and you can vote!'' -
1:19 - 1:21''That's your ability to choose!''
-
1:21 - 1:24Wow!
Turning adult is awesome! -
1:24 - 1:26You can put an 'X' on a piece of paper!
-
1:26 - 1:29Amazing! Wow! That's cool!
-
1:29 - 1:34But, what if you actually think about
problems and how to solve them? -
1:34 - 1:37Is there any way now, in society
that you can kind of interact? -
1:37 - 1:40You see all this pollution!
Wars! -
1:40 - 1:43Wars over oil, over territorial disputes...
-
1:43 - 1:47And the People dying!
All those things happening... -
1:47 - 1:50And you kind of wonder:
Isn't there a better way to do things? -
1:51 - 1:52WHERE ARE WE NOW?
-
1:52 - 1:57If you look at the trends how things
are working, and what's happening now, -
1:57 - 1:59you kind of see a pattern:
-
1:59 - 2:02The level of technology,
rises exponentially, -
2:02 - 2:03so it keeps growing and growing...
-
2:03 - 2:07
You have:
Technological unemployment. -
2:07 - 2:1190% of the people worked on farming,
a hundred years ago, -
2:11 - 2:15and now it's 2% of the people in developed countries.
-
2:15 - 2:19And, of course all the other people,
they had to move to another sector. -
2:19 - 2:21Then, it was the manufacturing sector and then...
-
2:21 - 2:23Technological unemployment again!
-
2:23 - 2:26So what do you, you move those people
to the service sector. -
2:26 - 2:27And what does the service sector do?
-
2:28 - 2:30Some people they have
some kind of utility, you know, -
2:30 - 2:33they help like, social workers...
Oh excellent job! -
2:33 - 2:35Voluntary work!
Oh amazing! -
2:35 - 2:37Helping!
Helping other people!? -
2:38 - 2:40But then, you've got all these other jobs like:
-
2:40 - 2:42Advertisement, anthropologists,...
-
2:42 - 2:45Oh wait, wait a second,
Anthropology that's interesting... That's...! -
2:45 - 2:48Yeah... But, how do use anthropologists now?
-
2:48 - 2:53I have some friends, some researchers and Phds,
in anthropology and social sciences. -
2:54 - 2:59You know how the system uses, the people
most likely to be able to help others, -
2:59 - 3:02because they can understand how,
social interactions work, -
3:02 - 3:04and how societies and cultures interact?
-
3:04 - 3:06They use them for:
-
3:07 - 3:09Exploitation!
Profit! -
3:09 - 3:12How to get into your mind,
and make advertisement, -
3:12 - 3:14and flashy things,
and so it gets into you! -
3:14 - 3:16OPTIONS
-
3:16 - 3:18I see only 2 options.
Two options! -
3:18 - 3:21One:
We keep the things as they are now. -
3:21 - 3:23So Status Quo.
We keep it going... -
3:24 - 3:26And what happens, you have:
-
3:27 - 3:29Natural monopolies and oligopolies...
-
3:30 - 3:33A bunch of corporations, taking
over everything, and they have... -
3:33 - 3:35Patents!
Patents on everything for profit! -
3:36 - 3:38You have patents on:
Medicines... -
3:38 - 3:41And then patents on:
Seeds and synthetic life... -
3:41 - 3:43Even on biological life...
-
3:43 - 3:47Do you really want that kind of world?
-
3:47 - 3:49You make the planet inhabitable?!
-
3:49 - 3:52You pollute everything to the point of,
-
3:52 - 3:56not being able to breathe
and drink and do anything, -
3:56 - 3:57without killing yourself?
-
3:59 - 4:03And give everything and the control,
to corporations?! -
4:04 - 4:06Or isn't there a better way to do things?
-
4:06 - 4:08STOP COMPLAINING
FIND SOLUTIONS -
4:09 - 4:12Why do I advocate The Zeitgeist Movement?
-
4:13 - 4:15Well, first you kind of have to understand
-
4:16 - 4:19what the Movement is
and what it proposes! -
4:19 - 4:21''Getting rid of property!''
Really? -
4:21 - 4:23''Getting rid of money!''
-
4:23 - 4:25''Transhumanist!''
-
4:25 - 4:28''You're a communist!''
''Anarchist!'' -
4:28 - 4:32''You're a socialist!''
''You're a conspiracy theorist!'' -
4:32 - 4:35''New world order!
You want reinstall a new world order!'' -
4:35 - 4:37''That's what you want?!''
''You're a kook!'' -
4:37 - 4:42''Central planning never worked,
and it killed a hundred gazillion people...!'' -
4:42 - 4:45''Like socialist Russia, in China, in Cambodia...!''
-
4:45 - 4:47Stop!
Step back! -
4:48 - 4:50Take a deep breath!
Think! -
4:51 - 4:53What is the Zeitgeist Movement about?
-
4:53 - 4:56It's not about getting rid of money,
getting rid of property, -
4:56 - 4:59central planning and all those things!
No, no, no...! -
4:59 - 5:03The Movement is about really,
a change of culture. -
5:03 - 5:07Why don't we base our activities on,
what the planet can provide? -
5:08 - 5:10Instead of just taking?
-
5:11 - 5:13It's changing our values!
-
5:14 - 5:18It's about realizing,
that we live in a finite planet. -
5:18 - 5:23And that we have to,
live in symbiosis with the planet, -
5:23 - 5:26and with other species.
And to do that, -
5:26 - 5:31we have to use the most efficient,
method that we know of. -
5:31 - 5:34And as of now,
it's the scientific method. -
5:34 - 5:38''Science? Are you crazy?
What has science ever done for us?'' -
5:38 - 5:40''Science? Science is cold!''
-
5:40 - 5:43Science is whatever works best!
-
5:43 - 5:45That's basically science, you know!
-
5:45 - 5:47Whatever helps you, is science!
-
5:47 - 5:50''Science is the atom bomb
and weapons, that's science!'' -
5:50 - 5:57No! That's, geopolitical will,
exploiting scientists. -
5:57 - 6:00That's not really science, you know!
That's not how science works. -
6:00 - 6:03Science is a method,
of arriving at decisions. -
6:03 - 6:06So that when you need something,
and you have to kind of, -
6:06 - 6:11figure out what's the best way to do it,
then you use the scientific method! -
6:11 - 6:16Try to figure out, what is the best way
to live, with others, peacefully. -
6:16 - 6:19''But in the real world!
Not in the utopia!'' -
6:19 - 6:22''Let's build the Fresco´s city!
The circular thing that everybody wants, -
6:22 - 6:25and it's perfect and everything is recyclable...!''
-
6:25 - 6:30Yeah, you can live in your soap-bubble,
for a while maybe... -
6:30 - 6:34But then the bombs start to fall,
and explode around you... -
6:34 - 6:39So, you're inside your little,
soap-bubble thingy, and... -
6:40 - 6:41That's just not gonna work!
-
6:42 - 6:45You have to make it, World Wide.
-
6:45 - 6:50Declare all the earth's resources,
common heritage, to all the world's people. -
6:50 - 6:54''You wanna impose on people? You wanna
take away my rights? Impose no property?'' -
6:54 - 6:57No, no, no...!
That's not how it works. -
6:58 - 7:04In the Venus Project, people can have property,
if they like to. If they want to. -
7:05 - 7:08There is no rule saying:
''Oh you don't have property! No! No!'' -
7:09 - 7:13''You want property? You want... You want
your own tshirt? No way! No! Sorry!'' -
7:13 - 7:17''We decided on 'No Property',
and we are gonna impose that value!'' -
7:17 - 7:20No dude!
You're getting all wrong! -
7:20 - 7:24It's not about getting rid of,
or imposing anything! -
7:24 - 7:32It's about, evolving out, of the need,
for useless, cyclical consumption. That's it! -
7:33 - 7:36You wanna keep your tshirt? You keep
your freaking tshirt! Who cares? -
7:36 - 7:41The point is:
You make resources available, efficiently, -
7:41 - 7:46using the most scientifically advanced,
technologies that you have, -
7:46 - 7:50to provide needs, to people.
-
7:50 - 7:53The idea is to live sustainably on the planet,
-
7:54 - 7:57peacefully, with the others.
-
7:58 - 8:00That's it!
How do you do that? -
8:00 - 8:03Well, you design flaws out the society.
-
8:03 - 8:06''You want a perfect society?
There's no way you can have a perfect...!'' -
8:06 - 8:10No dude!
We don't want a 'Perfect Society'! -
8:10 - 8:12We just want to get rid of the things,
-
8:12 - 8:13that are really, really wrong!
-
8:13 - 8:16''What if i don't want to,
get into your little game of, -
8:16 - 8:19you know, the perfect society
and live sustainable?'' -
8:19 - 8:22''I don't give a shit about the flowers
and the planet, and the people!'' -
8:22 - 8:25''I just want my rights! And my property!
And my things...!'' -
8:26 - 8:29Ok! Ok! Fine!
I'm not going to impose anything! -
8:29 - 8:32This is a peaceful movement.
-
8:32 - 8:36Because the shift,
can only happen if, -
8:36 - 8:39there is a cultural shift.
Emergent! -
8:39 - 8:41Emergent is the opposite of imposed!
-
8:42 - 8:44All those things that have been tried before,
-
8:44 - 8:48were ideologies, thought,
through, by someone, -
8:48 - 8:50and then imposed on the population!
-
8:50 - 8:53That's not how it works!
And that's not what we propose. -
8:53 - 8:57You don't have to tell people how to behave!
-
8:57 - 8:59You just have to teach them,
-
8:59 - 9:03how the world works,
and how science works, -
9:03 - 9:06and how human relationships work,
and how they are important! -
9:06 - 9:11Violence, breeds violence.
That's a scientific fact. -
9:11 - 9:12So how do you get rid of violence?
-
9:12 - 9:19You design society, so that you can
take away, negative retroactions. -
9:19 - 9:21You know it just... It just makes sense.
-
9:21 - 9:24It's about finding a way, to provide,
-
9:24 - 9:27the best for everyone, using,
-
9:27 - 9:32scientific knowledge,
and, the most relevant, -
9:32 - 9:36technologies that we have,
in an emergent culture! -
9:36 - 9:40You can take all the technologies you have,
you can just throw them out of the window! -
9:40 - 9:45They're just a piece of junk,
if they don't have people! -
9:45 - 9:48The purpose of technology is,
to free people, -
9:48 - 9:52from those jobs and those,
worries and stress! -
9:52 - 9:57And so you can dedicate your life,
into something more meaningful, -
9:58 - 10:00like, social relationships!
-
10:01 - 10:03Spend time with your family, with your friends...
-
10:03 - 10:05Study, play music!
-
10:05 - 10:07What you want to do, really!
-
10:07 - 10:10So it's not 'work', it's activities!
Voluntary work! -
10:10 - 10:12It's, something that you wanna do!
-
10:12 - 10:14''Oh people won't do anything!''
-
10:14 - 10:16Yeah! I would! I would!
-
10:16 - 10:19Fuck! I'm working 9 hours a day,
every day of the week, -
10:19 - 10:21and I'm still doing other activities,
-
10:21 - 10:23and I'm still studying other stuff,
-
10:23 - 10:25and I'm still, active in doing things!
-
10:25 - 10:28Because it's fun!
It's fun to learn, and do things! -
10:29 - 10:31It's fun!
You know, it's... human! -
10:31 - 10:35If there is anything about human nature is:
Curiosity! -
10:35 - 10:37The pleasure, of finding things out!
-
10:38 - 10:39TO SUM UP
-
10:40 - 10:42On one side, you have:
-
10:42 - 10:44Possible self-destruction...
-
10:44 - 10:46A handful of corporations controlling everything...
-
10:47 - 10:48Totalitarian governments...
-
10:48 - 10:52Patents on life and seeds...
And money, profit... -
10:52 - 10:56Destruction of the suitable environment for us and...
-
10:56 - 10:58Yeah...
-
10:58 - 11:00Doesn't sound very appealing!
-
11:00 - 11:02One the other side you have:
-
11:02 - 11:06Human evolution!
Exploration of space and... -
11:06 - 11:08Human knowledge, and...
-
11:08 - 11:11Music and poetry,
and human relationships... -
11:11 - 11:14And what's the nature of the Universe and...
-
11:14 - 11:18You kind of weight those things together and...
-
11:21 - 11:23I wonder, which one would I chose!
-
11:23 - 11:26I know, I'm over simplify!
It's not that simple! -
11:26 - 11:31But, if you really think about it,
it is that simple! -
11:32 - 11:37Cyclical consumption of goods and services,
for the sake of profit, -
11:37 - 11:40in a World that has finite resources, on one hand.
-
11:40 - 11:44And sustainable living, based on,
-
11:45 - 11:49what the planet can provide,
living in symbiosis with it, -
11:49 - 11:51and living peacefully,
with other people! -
11:51 - 11:55This is the kind of paradigm shift,
that we are talking about! -
11:55 - 11:59Maybe what we are proposing here,
may not be the best way, -
11:59 - 12:02and surely is not! And it's not perfect!
It's not perfect! -
12:03 - 12:04Just a lot better than the other.
-
12:04 - 12:07If you don't like something in the Movement,
-
12:07 - 12:10join and help us make it better!
-
12:10 - 12:11Like science!
-
12:11 - 12:13It's not about the people on the top!
No! -
12:14 - 12:16It's about the ideas!
It's about this paradigm shift! -
12:17 - 12:18JOIN

- Title:
- Why I advocate The Zeitgeist Movement, response to common criticisms - Federico Pistono, Italy
- Description:
-
This is a response to the most common criticisms and misconceptions regarding The Zeitgeist Movement, The Venus Project, and the Resource-Based Economy.
In case you are wondering, yes, the impersonations are pretty accurate representations of real people I met. Nothing is faked or invented, it's all taken from them.
I hope to convey the message from a somewhat human side of the movement, which is, obviously, made of people, and encourage others to think critically. Please, do make a video response, it's time to show our faces and who we are.
