0:46 - 0:49it's replaced a lot of other devices that we may have used in the past

0:49 - 0:52just because it's much easier to get a hold of

0:52 - 0:57and just by purchasing simple apps off the iTunes app store

0:57 - 1:00the device becomes extremely powerful and

1:00 - 1:04has tremendous benefit for individuals who have speech disabilities

1:04 - 1:07I'm Susan Monteiro and Tyler is our son
-
1:07 - 1:12Tyler is 12 years old and Tyler was born with Down Syndrome
-
1:12 - 1:17and later was diagnosed with autisim at around 7 years old
-
1:17 - 1:21Tyler is still non-verbal and never has spoken
-
1:21 - 1:27Tyler having a dual diagnosis of Down Syndrome and autism

1:27 - 1:32is very rare and most kids that have Down Syndrome
-
1:32 - 1:35don't have that diagnosis of autism

1:35 - 1:38You really would want to know as parents

1:38 - 1:46obviously, if your child may possibly have another diagnosis
-
1:46 - 1:47the best way to meet their needs
-
1:47 - 1:49especially their communication needs
-
1:49 - 1:51thinking about technology, I knew Apple had such devices
-
1:51 - 1:57the iPad, that was going to be coming out, that was incredibly affordable
-
1:57 - 2:00as compared to other assisted communication device
-
2:00 - 2:05it's light weight, it's not chunky and heavy
-
2:05 - 2:12it's absolutely very integrated into the whole of society

2:12 - 2:13every application that you could think of
-
2:13 - 2:17that helps a child succeed in a community is made
-
2:17 - 2:20to work with them and stay with them
-
2:20 - 2:24we heard about the scholarship program through UCP
-
2:24 - 2:28iPads Without Limits, applied for it, and was able
-
2:28 - 2:34to get Tyler an iPad. Tyler has been very successful with the iPad
-
2:34 - 2:40he's also shown great success with learning how to look at books
-
2:40 - 2:43he also has learned to look at pictures
-
2:43 - 2:48most importantly this has become a way for Tyler to communicate
-
2:48 - 2:53and the iPad is Tyler's voice

This video spotlights Tyler Monteiro, a San Luis Obispo resident who has both down syndrome and autism and is non-verbal. In Winter 2011, Tyler was given an iPad. He learned how to use it and more importantly how to communicate with it faster than we could have hoped for.
