The orchestra in my mouth
-
0:00 - 0:01My name is Tom,
-
0:01 - 0:05and I've come here today to come clean
-
0:05 - 0:08about what I do for money.
-
0:08 - 0:12Basically, I use my mouth in strange ways
-
0:12 - 0:14in exchange for cash.
-
0:14 - 0:15(Laughter)
-
0:15 - 0:18I usually do this kind of thing in seedy downtown bars
-
0:18 - 0:20and on street corners,
-
0:20 - 0:23so this mightn't be the most appropriate setting,
-
0:23 - 0:27but I'd like to give you guys a bit of a demonstration
-
0:27 - 0:30about what I do.
-
0:33 - 0:42(Beatboxing)
-
2:02 - 2:05And now, for my next number,
-
2:05 - 2:10I'd like to return to the classics.
-
2:10 - 2:12(Applause)
-
2:12 - 2:14We're going to take it back,
-
2:14 - 2:16way back,
-
2:16 - 2:19back into time.
-
2:22 - 2:30(Beatboxing: "Billie Jean")
-
2:41 - 2:45♫ Billie Jean is not my lover ♫
-
2:45 - 2:50♫ She's just a girl who claims that I am the one ♫
-
2:50 - 2:54♫ But the kid is not my son ♫
-
2:54 - 2:59(Applause) All right.
-
3:01 - 3:04Wassup.
-
3:04 - 3:06Thank you very much, TEDx.
-
3:06 - 3:09If you guys haven't figured it out already,
-
3:09 - 3:11my name's Tom Thum, and I'm a beatboxer,
-
3:11 - 3:14which means all the sounds that you just heard
-
3:14 - 3:17were made entirely using just my voice,
-
3:17 - 3:19and the only thing was my voice.
-
3:19 - 3:21And I can assure you
-
3:21 - 3:25there are absolutely no effects
-
3:25 - 3:31on this microphone whatsoever.
-
3:31 - 3:33And I'm very, very stoked —
-
3:33 - 3:34(Applause)
-
3:34 - 3:38You guys are just applauding for everything. It's great.
-
3:38 - 3:42Look at this, Mom! I made it!
-
3:42 - 3:45I'm very, very stoked to be here today,
-
3:45 - 3:47representing my kinfolk
-
3:47 - 3:51and all those that haven't managed to make a career
-
3:51 - 3:54out of an innate ability for inhuman noisemaking.
-
3:54 - 3:57Because it is a bit of a niche market,
-
3:57 - 4:00and there's not much work going on,
-
4:00 - 4:01especially where I'm from.
-
4:01 - 4:02You know, I'm from Brisbane,
-
4:02 - 4:04which is a great city to live in.
-
4:04 - 4:07Yeah! All right! Most of Brisbane's here. That's good.
-
4:07 - 4:08(Laughter)
-
4:08 - 4:11You know, I'm from Brizzy,
-
4:11 - 4:12which is a great city to live in,
-
4:12 - 4:14but let's be honest --
-
4:14 - 4:18it's not exactly the cultural hub of the Southern Hemisphere.
-
4:18 - 4:21So I do a lot of my work outside Brisbane
-
4:21 - 4:23and outside Australia,
-
4:23 - 4:26and so the pursuit of this crazy passion of mine
-
4:26 - 4:27has enabled me to see
-
4:27 - 4:30so many amazing places in the world.
-
4:30 - 4:35So I'd like to share with you, if I may, my experiences.
-
4:35 - 4:37So ladies and gentlemen,
-
4:37 - 4:40I would like to take you on a journey
-
4:40 - 4:42throughout the continents
-
4:42 - 4:46and throughout sound itself.
-
4:46 - 4:50We start our journey in the central deserts.
-
4:50 - 5:00(Didgeridoo)
-
5:00 - 5:04(Airplane)
-
5:04 - 5:05India.
-
5:05 - 5:19(Beatboxing)
-
5:19 - 5:25(Sitar)
-
5:25 - 5:26China.
-
5:26 - 5:39(Guzheng)
-
5:39 - 5:46(Beatboxing)
-
5:46 - 5:48Germany.
-
5:48 - 6:02(Beatboxing)
-
6:07 - 6:08Party, party, yeah.
-
6:08 - 6:13(Laughter)
-
6:13 - 6:17And before we reach our final destination,
-
6:17 - 6:18ladies and gentlemen,
-
6:18 - 6:21I would like to share with you some technology
-
6:21 - 6:24that I brought all the way from the thriving metropolis of Brisbane.
-
6:24 - 6:28These things in front of me here are called Kaoss Pads,
-
6:28 - 6:31and they allow me to do a whole lot of different things
-
6:31 - 6:33with my voice.
-
6:33 - 6:36For example, the one on the left here
-
6:36 - 6:38allows me to add
-
6:38 - 6:41a little bit of reverb to my sound,
-
6:41 - 6:43which gives me that --
-
6:43 - 6:49(Trumpet) --
-
6:49 - 6:51flavor.
-
6:51 - 6:52(Laughter)
-
6:52 - 6:54And the other ones here,
-
6:54 - 6:56I can use them in unison
-
6:56 - 6:59to mimic the effect of a drum machine
-
6:59 - 7:00or something like that.
-
7:00 - 7:02I can sample in my own sounds and I can play it back
-
7:02 - 7:08just by hitting the pads here.
-
7:08 - 7:21(Noises)
-
7:21 - 7:27TEDx.
-
7:27 - 7:36(Music)
-
7:45 - 7:49(Applause)
-
7:49 - 7:54I got way too much time on my hands.
-
7:54 - 7:55And last but not least,
-
7:55 - 7:58the one on my right here allows me to
-
7:58 - 8:02loop loop loop loop loop loop loop loop
-
8:02 - 8:04my voice.
-
8:04 - 8:08So with all that in mind, ladies and gentlemen,
-
8:08 - 8:10I would like to take you on a journey
-
8:10 - 8:13to a completely separate part of Earth
-
8:13 - 8:15as I transform the Sydney Opera House
-
8:15 - 8:20into a smoky downtown jazz bar.
-
8:20 - 8:23All right boys, take it away.
-
8:23 - 8:28(Music)
-
8:33 - 8:35Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you
-
8:35 - 8:36to a very special friend of mine,
-
8:36 - 8:39one of the greatest double bassists I know.
-
8:39 - 8:43Mr. Smokey Jefferson, let's take it for a walk. Come on, baby.
-
8:43 - 8:49(Music)
-
9:26 - 9:28All right, ladies and gentlemen,
-
9:28 - 9:30I'd like to introduce you to the star of the show,
-
9:30 - 9:33one of the greatest jazz legends of our time.
-
9:33 - 9:35Music lovers and jazz lovers alike,
-
9:35 - 9:37please give a warm hand of applause
-
9:37 - 9:41for the one and only Mr. Peeping Tom. Take it away.
-
9:41 - 9:46(Music)
-
9:46 - 9:53(Applause)
-
11:02 - 11:04Thank you. Thank you very much.
-
