The NSA and surveillance ... made simple - animation

  • 0:09 - 0:13
Now that nearly all of us are online, connected or digital in some way,
  • 0:13 - 0:18
spies are no longer watching just one or two bad guys.
  • 0:18 - 0:23
Instead, the UK and US governments are both collecting massive amounts of information
  • 0:23 - 0:29
from the things we do on our phones and over the Internet.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
There are two main ways in which they get hold of this information
  • 0:36 - 0:39
One way is working with the companies that run these systems,
  • 0:39 - 0:46
and tap the cables that are vital for moving all this information around.
  • 0:47 - 0:53
They can then sift through the huge amount of data they gather and all the messages that are there,
  • 0:53 - 0:58
and store them in massive computer databases.
  • 0:58 - 1:03
There are other techniques, involving user their relationship with technology companies,
  • 1:03 - 1:11
to get hold of things like e-mails, messages, or other information straight from their US servers.
  • 1:15 - 1:19
The spy agencies do throw away most of the content they collect.
  • 1:19 - 1:27
They keep that on their systems for about 3 days, then discard everything that is not from one of their targets.
  • 1:27 - 1:35
Metadata, though: who sent a message, who was it too, when it was sent, and more, is a different matter.
  • 1:35 - 1:43
The agencies keep almost all the metadata they see for around a month in the UK, and up to a year in the US.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
That lets them build up profiles of millions of people:
  • 1:47 - 1:54
who talks to whom, who knows who, and where people are, if need be.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
    These revelations pose many questions:
  • 1:58 - 2:05
what is the balance between our right to privacy, and the authorities' duty to protect us.
  • 2:05 - 2:12
Governments in America and the UK argue that these surveillance programs keep people safe from terrorism.
  • 2:12 - 2:17
But what happens if you are wrongly accused?
  • 2:17 - 2:21
And should we just accept that the Internet is now a different place,
  • 2:21 - 2:27
ran by business and governments that who can monitor us how they like?
  • 2:27 - 2:30
Now that you know you are being watched, how does that change your behavior,
  • 2:30 - 2:36
how you talk to your friends, and how much you trust the world around you.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
These revelations have change the Internet for us forever.
  • 2:40 - 2:46
Does privacy has a future online at all?
