The NSA and surveillance ... made simple - animation
-
0:09 - 0:13Now that nearly all of us are online, connected or digital in some way,
-
0:13 - 0:18spies are no longer watching just one or two bad guys.
-
0:18 - 0:23Instead, the UK and US governments are both collecting massive amounts of information
-
0:23 - 0:29from the things we do on our phones and over the Internet.
-
0:33 - 0:36There are two main ways in which they get hold of this information
-
0:36 - 0:39One way is working with the companies that run these systems,
-
0:39 - 0:46and tap the cables that are vital for moving all this information around.
-
0:47 - 0:53They can then sift through the huge amount of data they gather and all the messages that are there,
-
0:53 - 0:58and store them in massive computer databases.
-
0:58 - 1:03There are other techniques, involving user their relationship with technology companies,
-
1:03 - 1:11to get hold of things like e-mails, messages, or other information straight from their US servers.
-
1:15 - 1:19The spy agencies do throw away most of the content they collect.
-
1:19 - 1:27They keep that on their systems for about 3 days, then discard everything that is not from one of their targets.
-
1:27 - 1:35Metadata, though: who sent a message, who was it too, when it was sent, and more, is a different matter.
-
1:35 - 1:43The agencies keep almost all the metadata they see for around a month in the UK, and up to a year in the US.
-
1:43 - 1:47That lets them build up profiles of millions of people:
-
1:47 - 1:54who talks to whom, who knows who, and where people are, if need be.
-
1:54 - 1:58These revelations pose many questions:
-
1:58 - 2:05what is the balance between our right to privacy, and the authorities' duty to protect us.
-
2:05 - 2:12Governments in America and the UK argue that these surveillance programs keep people safe from terrorism.
-
2:12 - 2:17But what happens if you are wrongly accused?
-
2:17 - 2:21And should we just accept that the Internet is now a different place,
-
2:21 - 2:27ran by business and governments that who can monitor us how they like?
-
2:27 - 2:30Now that you know you are being watched, how does that change your behavior,
-
2:30 - 2:36how you talk to your friends, and how much you trust the world around you.
-
2:36 - 2:40These revelations have change the Internet for us forever.
-
2:40 - 2:46Does privacy has a future online at all?
