Josh Seftel: A mother, a son, and an iPad

  • 0:01 - 0:05
This is the story of a mother,
    a son and an iPad.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    (ringtone)
  • 0:07 - 0:10
This is me about a year ago,
    calling my mother.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    Hello? Can you see me?
    - I can't see.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    Oh, now I can.
    - Oh, my finger was on--
  • 0:16 - 0:20
And this is my mom about a year ago,
still getting the hang of her new iPad.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    Yeah, the camera.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    We're using software
    called FaceTime.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
But my mom has another name for it.
    What is this called?
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    Facelift.
    - This software is called Facelift?
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    Something like that.
    - But this story starts way before this.
  • 0:35 - 0:40
    This is my dad.
He met my mom. They got married.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    They raised three kids.
    That's me in the middle.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
And this is me, years later,
after I decided to become a filmmaker.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    That's when I started
filming my parents all the time.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    I filmed them fighting.
    - You never button your- Now these-
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    I filmed them having fun.
    - Let go!
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    (laughter)
I could tell they liked me filming them.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    Especially my mom.
    - I wouldn't mind being a television s-
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    on television or the radio.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
Yeah, but your chances of that are?
    - Nil.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    However, you never know.
    - You never know.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
Not long after this, my dad
was diagnosed with a serious lung disease.
  • 1:18 - 1:23
    That's when the filming stopped.
Within a month, my dad was gone.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    My mom was alone now,
and my sisters and I were worried.
  • 1:28 - 1:34
    So, for her 70th birthday,
    we bought her an iPad.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    Which brings us full circle.
    - I can't hear you.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    I've lost your voice.
    - It was a rocky beginning.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    Hello?
  • 1:44 - 1:46
But once she got the hang of it...
    - Hi!
  • 1:46 - 1:49
...we started talking all the time.
    Hows it going?
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    And I noticed she especially
    liked talking about showbusiness.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    So, just like before,
    I started filming her.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    (ringtone)
  • 1:58 - 2:03
I call our conversations "My Mom on Movies"
and I share them on YouTube.
  • 2:03 - 2:07
    From Justin Bieber's monkey...
    - I dont think he cared about his monkey.
  • 2:07 - 2:12
    ...to Miley Cyrus twerking.
    - What was it called? Um, turkey or twerky?
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    Or twerking?
    Is that what it is?
  • 2:16 - 2:20
Our videos have a loyal following.
These days, reporters are calling my mom.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    We've been on radio shows...
    - Hi Pat, this is Faith.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    Thank you for joining us.
    - Thank you.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    ...and in newspapers.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
But the best part of it all is that
the chats have brought us closer together.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    The conversations usually start
    with something about the movies.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
What do you think about Bradley Cooper
and how he's living with his mother?
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    You think that's nice?
    - Oh yeah, I do.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
    But they always move to
    something a little more personal.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
How would you like it if I lived with you?
    - Oh, I'd love it!
  • 2:49 - 2:52
It'd be like a dream come true.
    - Why?
  • 2:52 - 2:57
    I like you.
    And I miss you.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
When people ask me about it, I say:
  • 2:59 - 3:03
    Everyone should get their mom
an iPad and do a web series with her.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    It might make her famous,
    and I promise
  • 3:06 - 3:09
it'll go much deeper than that.
