-
0:00 - 0:03Top 10 Bicycle-Friendly Design Elements in Copenhagen
-
0:03 - 0:07Chapter 06: Macro design
-
0:09 - 0:12Macro Design represents the city's showcase projects.
-
0:12 - 0:14The crown jewels and missing links
-
0:14 - 0:19that make it so easy to get around the city of Copenhagen by bicycle.
-
0:35 - 0:37bicycle and pedestrian bridges
-
0:37 - 0:42Copenhagen wouldn't be Copenahagen without a harbour, but the water environment
-
0:42 - 0:45makes for a logistical challenge when trying to move people and goods
-
0:45 - 0:47over this watery environment.
-
0:47 - 0:53In 2006 a bridge was constructed to connect Vesterbro and the inner city
-
0:53 - 0:59with Islands Quay and Islands brygge and the southern part of the city.
-
1:00 - 1:03Now, based on the study that was launched in 2012,
-
1:03 - 1:0870% of the people traversing this bridge do so to get to work.
-
1:08 - 1:15So it makes them to commute faster and 9000 people have used the bridge as in 2012 number.
-
1:18 - 1:23Luckily for Copenhagen the city didn't stop with this one pedestrian and bicycle bridge,
-
1:23 - 1:28they have many plans for future developments as many as 9 other bridges
-
1:28 - 1:30to contact the harbor sites.
-
1:30 - 1:34How people most eagerly awaited infrastructural project to be
-
1:34 - 1:38is the Superslangen or the bicycle snake. Which will link Vesterbro
-
1:38 - 1:42with there already completed bicycle bridge that I was talking about earlier.
-
1:42 - 1:46Now this project is very exciting because it is expected to double
-
1:46 - 1:50the capacity of bicycles going along this road.
-
1:53 - 1:55cycle superhighways
-
1:55 - 2:01There are currently two bicycle superhighways in operation in Copenhagen
-
2:01 - 2:03and the greater Copenhagen area.
-
2:03 - 2:10The first is the Albertslund route (C99) which extents to the west of the city for 17 km.
-
2:10 - 2:16And second is the Farum route (C95) which goes to the north of the city for 16 km.
-
2:16 - 2:21Along the way there are bicycle footrests advertising the route
-
2:21 - 2:27and showing the path and these all are painted in an iconic orange colour.
-
2:27 - 2:32Along the road, which makes the road different from other cycle tracks in the city
-
2:32 - 2:36is the fact that it is completely separated from the highway
-
2:36 - 2:40even thought it is in such a close proximity to the motorway.
-
2:41 - 2:46As of the 2012 Bicycle Counts, the City of Copenhagen is planning
-
2:46 - 2:5128 bicycle superhighways with a total of 400 kilometres.
-
2:53 - 2:55So when thinking about macro design
-
2:55 - 2:59we have to think of the city as an entire integrated whole.
-
2:59 - 3:02So it is not just about lying cycle track in one neighborhood
-
3:02 - 3:07and forgetting it or leaving it to rot. It is about connecting the system.
-
3:07 - 3:12So that the user can interact with the city scape and make their days easier
-
3:12 - 3:14and their journeys more enjoyable.
