    The world has been much, much more capable

    as the decades go by

    to protect people from this, you know.

    So I went to the zoo and I asked the chimps.

    What about poverty?

    and in U.S., when we asked the public,

    only five percent got it right.

    they think that oh, we can never end extreme poverty.

    It's just those people with big hearts

    and work as humanitarians who think so.

    Of course they think so,

    because they don't even know what has happened.

    The first thing to think about the future
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    is to know about the present.

    These questions were a few of the first ones

    in the pilot phase of the Ignorance Project
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    in Gapminder Foundation that we run,
  • 6:25 - 6:29
    and it was started, this project, last year
  • 6:29 - 6:33
    by my boss, and also my son, Ola Rosling. (Laughter)

    He's cofounder and director,
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    and he wanted, Ola told me
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    we have to be more systematic
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    when we fight devastating ignorance.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    So already the pilots reveal this,
  • 6:43 - 6:46
    that so many in the public score worse than random,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    so we have to think about preconceived ideas,
  • 6:48 - 6:50
    and one of the main preconceived ideas
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    is about world income distribution.
  • 6:52 - 6:56
    Look here. This is how it was in 1975.

    It's the number of people on each income,
  • 6:59 - 7:03
    from one dollar a day, one dollar a day —
  • 7:03 - 7:05

    See, there was one hump here,
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    around one dollar a day,
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    and then there was one hump here
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    somewhere between 10 and 100 dollars.

    The world was two groups.
  • 7:14 - 7:17
    It was a camel world, like a camel with two humps,
  • 7:17 - 7:20
    the poor ones and the rich ones,
  • 7:20 - 7:21
    and there were fewer in between.

    But look how this has changed:

    As I go forward, what has changed,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    the world population has grown,
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    and the humps start to merge.

    The lower humps merged with the upper hump,

    and the camel dies and we have a dromedary world
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    with one hump only.
  • 7:37 - 7:38
    But look at the difference.

    When you answer the questions,
  • 7:40 - 7:42
    many think that it's still about how it is
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    here in the poll.

    The percent in poverty has decreased.
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    Still it's appalling
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    that so many remain in extreme poverty.
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    We still have this group, almost a billion, over there,
  • 7:53 - 7:57
    but that can be ended now.

    The challenge we have now

    is to get away from that,
    understand where the majority is,
  • 8:02 - 8:06
    and that is very clearly shown in this question.

    We asked, what is the percentage of the world's
  • 8:07 - 8:09
    one-year-old children who have got those
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    basic vaccines against measles and other things
  • 8:12 - 8:13
    that we have had for many years:

    20, 50 or 80 percent?
  • 8:15 - 8:19
    Now, this is what the U.S.
    public and the Swedish answered.

    Look at the Swedish result:

    you know what the right answer is.

    Who the heck is a professor of
    global health in that country?

    Well, it's me. It's me.

    It's very difficult, this. It's very difficult.

    However, Ola's approach

    to really measure what we know made headlines,

    and CNN published these results on their web

    and they had the questions there, millions answered,

    and I think there were about 2,000 comments,
  • 8:54 - 8:57
    and this was one of the comments.

    These were the survey companies
  • 9:00 - 9:02
    who did these surveys together with us,
  • 9:02 - 9:03
    and the comment we had there,
  • 9:03 - 9:06
    one was very interesting. It was Bill Smith.
  • 9:06 - 9:09
    "I bet no member of the media
    passed the test," he said.
  • 9:09 - 9:12
    So Ola told me, "Take these devices.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    You are invited to media conferences.
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    Give it to them and measure what the media know."
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    And ladies and gentlemen,
  • 9:18 - 9:21
    for the first time, the informal results
  • 9:21 - 9:24
    from a conference with U.S. media.
  • 9:24 - 9:29
    And then, lately, from the European Union media.

    You see, the problem is not that people
  • 9:33 - 9:35
    don't read and listen to the media.
  • 9:35 - 9:39
    The problem is that the
    media doesn't know themselves.

    What shall we do about this, Ola?

    Do we have any ideas?

    But first, let's look at why are we so ignorant,

    and it all starts in this place.

    It's Hudiksvall. It's a city in northern Sweden.

    It's a neighborhood where I grew up,
  • 10:27 - 10:30
    and it's a neighborhood with a large problem.

    Actually, it has exactly the same problem
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    which existed in all the neighborhoods
  • 10:34 - 10:37
    where you grew up as well.
  • 10:37 - 10:39
    It was not representative. Okay?
  • 10:39 - 10:41
    It gave me a very biased view
  • 10:41 - 10:43
    of how life is on this planet.
  • 10:43 - 10:46
    So this is the first piece of the ignorance puzzle.
  • 10:46 - 10:48
    We have a personal bias.
  • 10:48 - 10:50
    We have all different experiences
  • 10:50 - 10:52
    from communities and people we meet,
  • 10:52 - 10:55
    and on top of this, we start school,
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    and we add the next problem.
  • 10:57 - 10:58
    Well, I like schools,
  • 10:58 - 11:03
    but teachers tend to teach outdated worldviews,
  • 11:03 - 11:05
    because they learned something
    when they went to school,
  • 11:05 - 11:08
    and now they describe this world to the students
  • 11:08 - 11:10
    without any bad intentions,
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    and those books, of course, that are printed
  • 11:12 - 11:15
    are outdated in a world that changes.
  • 11:15 - 11:18
    And there is really no practice
  • 11:18 - 11:20
    to keep the teaching material up to date.
  • 11:20 - 11:22
    So that's what we are focusing on at Google.
  • 11:22 - 11:24
    So we have these outdated facts
  • 11:24 - 11:27
    added on top of our personal bias.
  • 11:27 - 11:30
    What happens next is news, okay?
  • 11:30 - 11:32
    An excellent journalist knows how to pick
  • 11:32 - 11:35
    the story that will make headlines,
  • 11:35 - 11:38
    and people will read it because it's sensational.
  • 11:38 - 11:41
    It's unusual events are more interesting, no?
  • 11:41 - 11:44
    And they are exaggerated,
  • 11:44 - 11:46
    and especially things we're afraid of.
  • 11:46 - 11:49
    A shark attack on a Swedish person
  • 11:49 - 11:53
    will get headlines for weeks in Sweden.
  • 11:53 - 11:57
    Okay. So these three skewed sources of information
  • 11:57 - 11:59
    was really hard to get away from, wasn't it, you know?
  • 11:59 - 12:01
    They kind of bombard us
  • 12:01 - 12:05
    and equip our mind with a lot of strange ideas,
  • 12:05 - 12:08
    and on top of it, we put the very thing
  • 12:08 - 12:13
    that makes us human, our human intuition. Okay?
  • 12:13 - 12:15
    It was good in evolution.
  • 12:15 - 12:16
    It helped us generalize
  • 12:16 - 12:19
    and jump to conclusions very, very fast.
  • 12:19 - 12:22
    It helped us exaggerate what we were afraid of,
  • 12:22 - 12:26
    and we seek causality where there is none,
  • 12:26 - 12:31
    and we then get an illusion of confidence
  • 12:31 - 12:34
    where we believe that we are the best car drivers,
  • 12:34 - 12:35
    above the the average.
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    Everybody answered that question,
  • 12:37 - 12:39
    "Yeah, I drive cars better."
  • 12:39 - 12:41
    Okay, this was good evolutionarily,
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    but now when it comes to the worldview,
  • 12:43 - 12:45
    it is the exact reason why it's upside down.
  • 12:45 - 12:48
    The trends that are increasing are instead falling,
  • 12:48 - 12:49
    and the other way around,
  • 12:49 - 12:54
    and in this case, the chimps
    use our intuition against us,
  • 12:54 - 12:57
    and it becomes our weakness instead of our strength.
  • 12:57 - 13:00
    It was supposed to be our strength, wasn't it.

    Okay. Well, we're going to try to solve it.
  • 13:03 - 13:05
    So how do we solve such problems?
  • 13:05 - 13:07
    First, we need to measure it,
  • 13:07 - 13:08
    and then we need to cure it.

    So by measuring it we can understand
  • 13:11 - 13:13
    what is the pattern of ignorance.
  • 13:13 - 13:15
    We started the pilot last year,
  • 13:15 - 13:17
    and now we're pretty sure that we will encounter
  • 13:17 - 13:20
    a lot of ignorance across the whole world,
  • 13:20 - 13:24
    and the idea is really to
  • 13:24 - 13:26
    scale it up to all domains
  • 13:26 - 13:29
    or dimensions of global development,
  • 13:29 - 13:33
    such as climate, endangered species, human rights,
  • 13:33 - 13:37
    gender equality, energy, climate, finance.
  • 13:37 - 13:39
    All different sectors have facts,
  • 13:39 - 13:41
    and there are organizations trying to spread
  • 13:41 - 13:43
    awareness about these facts.
  • 13:43 - 13:46
    So I've started actually contacting some of them,
  • 13:46 - 13:50
    like WWF and Amnesty International and UNICEF,
  • 13:50 - 13:52
    and asking them, what are your favorite facts
  • 13:52 - 13:54
    which you think the public don't know?
  • 13:54 - 13:56
    Okay, I gather those facts.
  • 13:56 - 13:59
    Imagine a long list with, say, 250 facts.
  • 13:59 - 14:01
    And then we poll the public
  • 14:01 - 14:02
    and see where they score worst.
  • 14:02 - 14:04
    Okay? So we get a shorter list
  • 14:04 - 14:05
    with the terrible results,
  • 14:05 - 14:07
    like some few examples Hans,
  • 14:07 - 14:09
    and we have no problem finding these kinds
  • 14:09 - 14:11
    of terrible results.
  • 14:11 - 14:14
    Okay, this little shortlist, what
    are we going to do with it?

    Well, we turn it into a knowledge certificate,
  • 14:18 - 14:20
    a global knowledge certificate,
  • 14:20 - 14:23
    which you can use, if you're a large organization,
  • 14:23 - 14:26
    a school, a university, or maybe a news agency,
  • 14:26 - 14:30
    to certify yourself as globally knowledgable.
  • 14:30 - 14:33
    Okay? Basically meaning, we don't hire people
  • 14:33 - 14:35
    who score like chimpanzees, you know?
  • 14:35 - 14:38
    Of course you shouldn't.
  • 14:38 - 14:40
    So maybe 10 years from now,

    if this project succeeds,
  • 14:42 - 14:44
    you will be sitting at an interview
  • 14:44 - 14:48
    having to fill out this crazy global knowledge.

    So now we come to the practical tricks.

    How are you going to succeed?

    There is, of course, one way,
  • 14:57 - 14:59
    which is to sit down late nights
  • 14:59 - 15:01
    and learn all the facts by heart
  • 15:01 - 15:03
    by reading all these reports.

    That will never happen, actually.

    Not even Hans thinks that's going to happen.

    People don't have that time.

    People like shortcuts, and here are the shortcuts.

    We need to turn our intuition into strength again.

    We need to be able to generalize.

    So now I'm going to show you some tricks

    where the misconceptions are turned around

    into rules of thumb.

    Let's start with the first misconception.

    This is very widespread.

    Everything is getting worse.

    They're only rules of thumb,

    so of course they don't apply to everything,

    but this is how you can generalize.

    Let's look at the last one.
