Why some people are more altruistic than others

    There's a man out there somewhere

    who looks a little bit like
    the actor Idris Elba,
  • Not Synced
    or at least he did 20 years ago.
  • Not Synced
    I don't know anything else about him,
  • Not Synced
    except that he once saved my life
  • Not Synced
    by putting his own life in danger.
  • Not Synced
    This man ran across four lanes of freeway
    traffic in the middle of the night
  • Not Synced
    to bring me back to safety
  • Not Synced
    after a car accident
    that could have killed me.
  • Not Synced
    And the whole thing left me
    really shaken up, obviously,
  • Not Synced
    but it also left me with this kind of
    burning, gnawing need to understand
  • Not Synced
    why he did it,
  • Not Synced
    what forces within him caused him
    to make the choice
  • Not Synced
    that I owe my life to,
  • Not Synced
    to risk his own life
    to save the life of a stranger?
  • Not Synced
    In other words, what are the causes of his
    or anybody else's capacity for altruism?
  • Not Synced
    Well, first let me tell you what happened.
  • Not Synced
    That night, I was 19 years old
  • Not Synced
    and driving back to my home
    in Tacoma, Washington,
  • Not Synced
    down the Interstate 5 freeway,
  • Not Synced
    when a little dog darted out
    in front of my car,
  • Not Synced
    and I did exactly what
    you're not supposed to do,
  • Not Synced
    which is swerve to avoid it.
  • Not Synced
    And I discovered why
    you're not supposed to do that.
  • Not Synced
    I hit the dog anyways,
  • Not Synced
    and that sent the car into a fishtail,
  • Not Synced
    and then a spin across the freeway,
  • Not Synced
    until finally I wound up
    in the fast lane of the freeway
  • Not Synced
    faced backwards into oncoming traffic
  • Not Synced
    and then the engine died.
  • Not Synced
    And I was sure in that moment
    that I was about to die too,
  • Not Synced
    but I didn't
  • Not Synced
    because of the actions
    of that one brave man
  • Not Synced
    who must have made the decision
    within a fraction of a second
  • Not Synced
    of seeing my stranded car
  • Not Synced
    to pull over and run across
    four lanes of freeway traffic
  • Not Synced
    in the dark
  • Not Synced
    to save my life.
  • Not Synced
    And then after he got
    my car working again
  • Not Synced
    and got me back to safety
  • Not Synced
    and made sure I was going to be all right,
  • Not Synced
    he drove off again.
  • Not Synced
    He never even told me his name,
  • Not Synced
    and I'm pretty sure
    I forgot to say thank you.
  • Not Synced
    So before I go any further,
  • Not Synced
    I really want to take a moment
    to stop and say
  • Not Synced
    thank you to that stranger.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    I tell you all of this because
  • Not Synced
    the events of that night changed
    the course of my life to some degree.
  • Not Synced
    I became a psychology researcher,
  • Not Synced
    and I've devoted my work to understanding
    the human capacity to care for others.
  • Not Synced
    Where does it come from,
    and how does it develop,
  • Not Synced
    and what are the extreme forms
    that it can take?
  • Not Synced
    These questions are really important
    to understanding basic aspects
  • Not Synced
    of human social nature.
  • Not Synced
    A lot of people, and this includes
    everybody from philosophers
  • Not Synced
    and economists to ordinary people
  • Not Synced
    believe that human nature
    is fundamentally selfish,
  • Not Synced
    that we're only ever really motivated
    by our own welfare.
  • Not Synced
    But if that's true, why do some people,
  • Not Synced
    like the stranger who rescued me,
  • Not Synced
    do selfless things
    like helping other people
  • Not Synced
    at enormous risk and cost to themselves?
  • Not Synced
    Answering this question requires
  • Not Synced
    exploring the roots of extraordinary
    acts of altruism,
  • Not Synced
    and what might make people
    who engage in such acts
  • Not Synced
    different than other people.
  • Not Synced
    But until recently, very little work
    on this topic had been done.
  • Not Synced
    The actions of the man who rescued me
  • Not Synced
    meet the most stringent
    definition of altruism,
  • Not Synced
    which is a voluntary, costly behavior
  • Not Synced
    motivated by the desire
    to help another individual.
  • Not Synced
    So it's a selfless act intended
    to benefit only the other.
  • Not Synced
    What could possibly explain
    an action like that?
  • Not Synced
    One answer is compassion, obviously,
  • Not Synced
    which is a key driver of altruism.
  • Not Synced
    But then the question becomes,
  • Not Synced
    why do some people seem to have
    more of it than others?
  • Not Synced
    And the answer may be that the brains
    of highly altruistic people
  • Not Synced
    are different in fundamental ways.
  • Not Synced
    But to figure out how,
  • Not Synced
    I actually started from the opposite end,
  • Not Synced
    with psychopaths.
  • Not Synced
    A common approach to understanding
    basic aspects of human nature,
  • Not Synced
    like the desire to help other people,
  • Not Synced
    is to study people in whom
    that desire is missing,
  • Not Synced
    and psychopaths are exactly such a group.
  • Not Synced
    Psychopathy is a developmental disorder
  • Not Synced
    with strongly genetic origins,
  • Not Synced
    and it results in a personality
    that's cold and uncaring
  • Not Synced
    and a tendency to engage in antisocial
    and sometimes very violent behavior.
  • Not Synced
    Once my colleagues and I
    at the National Institute of Mental Health
  • Not Synced
    conducted some of the first ever
    brain imaging research
  • Not Synced
    of psychopathic adolescents,
  • Not Synced
    and our findings, and the findings
    of other researchers now, have shown
  • Not Synced
    that people who are psychopathic
    pretty reliably exhibit
  • Not Synced
    three characteristics.
  • Not Synced
    First, although they're not generally
    insensitive to other people's emotions,
  • Not Synced
    they are insensitive to signs
    that other people are in distress.
  • Not Synced
    And in particular, they have difficulty
    recognizing fearful facial expressions
  • Not Synced
    like this one.
  • Not Synced
    And fearful expressions convey
    urgent need and emotional distress,
  • Not Synced
    and they usually elicit compassion and
    a desire to help in people who see them,
  • Not Synced
    so it makes sense that people
    who tend to lack compassion
  • Not Synced
    also tend to be insensitive to these cues.
  • Not Synced
    The part of the brain that's
    the most important for recognizing
  • Not Synced
    fearful expressions
    is called the amygdala.
  • Not Synced
    There are very rare cases of people
    who lack amygdalas completely,
  • Not Synced
    and they're profoundly impaired
    in recognizing fearful expressions.
  • Not Synced
    And whereas healthy adults and children
  • Not Synced
    usually show big spikes
    in amygdala activity
  • Not Synced
    when they look at fearful expressions,
  • Not Synced
    psychopaths' amygdalas are
    underreactive to these expressions.
  • Not Synced
    Sometimes they don't react at all,
  • Not Synced
    which may be why they have trouble
    detecting these cues.
  • Not Synced
    Finally, psychopaths' amygdalas
    are smaller than average
  • Not Synced
    by about 18 or 20 percent.
  • Not Synced
    So all of these findings
    are reliable and robust,
  • Not Synced
    and they're very interesting.
  • Not Synced
    But remember that my main interest
  • Not Synced
    is not understanding why people
    don't care about others.
  • Not Synced
    It's understanding why they do.
  • Not Synced
    So the real question is,
  • Not Synced
    could extraordinary altruism,
  • Not Synced
    which is the opposite of psychopathy
  • Not Synced
    in terms of compassion
    and the desire to help other people,
  • Not Synced
    emerge from a brain that is also
    the opposite of psychopathy?
  • Not Synced
    A sort of anti-psychopathic brain,
  • Not Synced
    better able to recognize
    other people's fear,
  • Not Synced
    an amygdala that's more reactive
    to this expression
  • Not Synced
    and maybe large than average as well?
  • Not Synced
    As my research has now shown,
  • Not Synced
    all three things are true.
  • Not Synced
    And we discovered this by testing
    a population
  • Not Synced
    of truly extraordinary altruists.
  • Not Synced
    This is people who have given
    one of their own kidneys
  • Not Synced
    to a complete stranger.
  • Not Synced
    So these are people who have volunteered
    to undergo major surgery
  • Not Synced
    so that one of their own
    healthy kidneys can be removed
  • Not Synced
    and transplanted into a very ill stranger
  • Not Synced
    that they've never met and may never meet.
  • Not Synced
    "Why would anybody do this?"
    is a very common question.
  • Not Synced
    And the answer may be
  • Not Synced
    that the brains of these
    extraordinary altruists
  • Not Synced
    have certain special characteristics.
  • Not Synced
    They are better at recognizing
    other people's fear.
  • Not Synced
    They're literally better at detecting
    when somebody else is in distress.
  • Not Synced
    This may be in part because their amygdala
  • Not Synced
    is more reactive to these expressions.
  • Not Synced
    And remember, this is the same part
    of the brain that we found
  • Not Synced
    was underreactive in people
    who are psychopathic.
  • Not Synced
    And finally, their amygdalas
    are larger than average as well,
  • Not Synced
    by about eight percent.
  • Not Synced
    So together, what these data suggest
  • Not Synced
    is the existence of something
    like a caring continuum in the world
  • Not Synced
    that's anchored at the one end
    by people who are highly psychopathic,
  • Not Synced
    and at the other by people
    who are very compassionate
  • Not Synced
    and driven to acts of extreme altruism.
  • Not Synced
    But I should add that what makes
    extraordinary altruists so different
  • Not Synced
    is not just that they're more
    compassionate than average.
  • Not Synced
    They are,
  • Not Synced
    but what's even more unusual about them
  • Not Synced
    is that they're compassionate
    and altruistic
  • Not Synced
    not just towards people who are
    in their own innermost circle
  • Not Synced
    of friends and family. Right?
  • Not Synced
    Because to have compassion for people
    that you love and identify with
  • Not Synced
    is not extraordinary.
  • Not Synced
    Truly extraordinary altruists' compassion
    extends way beyond that circle,
  • Not Synced
    even beyond their wider
    circle of acquaintances
  • Not Synced
    to people who are outside
    their social circle altogether,
  • Not Synced
    total strangers,
  • Not Synced
    just like the man who rescued me.
  • Not Synced
    And I've had the opportunity now
    to ask a lot of altruistic kidney donors
  • Not Synced
    how it is that they manage to generate
    such a wide circle of compassion
  • Not Synced
    that they were willing to give
    a complete stranger their kidney.
  • Not Synced
    And I found it's a really difficult
    question for them to answer.
  • Not Synced
    I say, "How is it that you're willing
    to do this thing
  • Not Synced
    when so many other people don't?
  • Not Synced
    You're one of fewer than 2,000 Americans
  • Not Synced
    who has ever given a kidney to a stranger?
  • Not Synced
    What is it that makes you so special?"
  • Not Synced
    And what do they say?
  • Not Synced
    They say, "Nothing.
  • Not Synced
    There's nothing special about me.
  • Not Synced
    I'm just the same as everybody else."
  • Not Synced
    And I think that's actually
    a really telling answer,
  • Not Synced
    because it suggests that the circles
    of these altruists don't look like this,
  • Not Synced
    they look more like this.
  • Not Synced
    They have no center.
  • Not Synced
    These altruists literally don't think
    of themselves as being
  • Not Synced
    at the center of anything,
  • Not Synced
    as being better or more
    inherently important than anybody else.
  • Not Synced
    When I asked one altruist why
    donating her kidney made sense to her,
  • Not Synced
    she said,
  • Not Synced
    "Because it's not about me."
  • Not Synced
    Another said,
  • Not Synced
    "I'm not different. I'm not unique.
  • Not Synced
    Your study here is going to find out
    that I'm just the same as you."
  • Not Synced
    I think the best description for this
    amazing lack of self-centeredness
  • Not Synced
    is humility,
  • Not Synced
    which is that quality that in the words
    of St. Augustine
  • Not Synced
    makes men as angels.
  • Not Synced
    And why is that?
  • Not Synced
    It's because if there's no
    center of your circle,
  • Not Synced
    there can be no inner rings
    or outer rings,
  • Not Synced
    nobody who is more or less worthy
    of your care and compassion
  • Not Synced
    than anybody else.
  • Not Synced
    And I think that this is what really
    distinguishes extraordinary altruists
  • Not Synced
    from the average person.
  • Not Synced
    But I also think that this is a view
    of the world that's attainable
  • Not Synced
    by many and maybe even most people,
  • Not Synced
    and I think this because
    at the societal level,
  • Not Synced
    expansions of altruism and compassion
    are already happening everywhere.
  • Not Synced
    The psychologist Steven Pinker
    and others have shown
  • Not Synced
    that all around the world people
    are becoming less and less accepting
  • Not Synced
    of suffering in ever-widening
    circles of others,
  • Not Synced
    which has led to declines of all kinds
    of cruelty and violence,
  • Not Synced
    from animal abuse to domestic violence
    to capital punishment.
  • Not Synced
    And it's led to increases
    in all kinds of altruism.
  • Not Synced
    A hundred years ago, people would have
    thought it was ludicrous
  • Not Synced
    how normal and ordinary it is
    for people to donate their blood
  • Not Synced
    and bone marrow
  • Not Synced
    to complete strangers today.
  • Not Synced
    Is it possible that
    a hundred years from now
  • Not Synced
    people will think that donating
    a kidney to a stranger
  • Not Synced
    is just as normal and ordinary
  • Not Synced
    as we think donating blood
    and bone marrow is today?
  • Not Synced
    Maybe.
  • Not Synced
    So what's at the root of all
    these amazing changes?
  • Not Synced
    In part it seems to me
  • Not Synced
    increases in wealth
    and standards of living.
  • Not Synced
    As societies become
    wealthier and better off,
  • Not Synced
    people seem to turn their focus
    of attention outward,
  • Not Synced
    and as a result, all kinds of altruism
    towards strangers increases,
  • Not Synced
    from volunteering to charitable donations
  • Not Synced
    and even altruistic kidney donations.
  • Not Synced
    But all of these changes also yield
  • Not Synced
    a strange and paradoxical result,
  • Not Synced
    which is that even as the world
    is becoming a better
  • Not Synced
    and more humane place, which it is,
  • Not Synced
    there's a very common perception
    that it's becoming worse
  • Not Synced
    and more cruel, which it's not.
  • Not Synced
    And I don't know exactly why this is,
  • Not Synced
    but I think it may be that we just know
    so much more about the suffering
  • Not Synced
    of strangers in distant places,
  • Not Synced
    and so we now care a lot more
  • Not Synced
    about the suffering
    of those distant strangers.
  • Not Synced
    But what's clear is the kinds
    of changes we're seeing show
  • Not Synced
    that the roots of altruism and compassion
  • Not Synced
    are just as much a part of human nature
    as cruelty and violence,
  • Not Synced
    maybe even more so,
  • Not Synced
    and while some people do seem
    to be inherently more sensitive
  • Not Synced
    to the suffering of distant others,
  • Not Synced
    I really believe that the ability
    to remove oneself
  • Not Synced
    from the center of the circle
  • Not Synced
    and expand the circle of compassion
    outward to include even strangers
  • Not Synced
    is within reach for almost everyone.
  • Not Synced
