Don't Give Up on You | Kacey Gal | TEDxSelkirkCollegeED
-
0:06 - 0:08The future is scary.
-
0:08 - 0:10The millions of options and paths
-
0:10 - 0:12lying in front of us
can be greatly detrimental -
0:12 - 0:14to our well-being.
-
0:14 - 0:16Life transitions and loss,
-
0:16 - 0:19the inability to decide
what to do or who to be. -
0:19 - 0:22Those times when you
say to yourself "what now?" -
0:22 - 0:26can create a lot of stress, anxiety,
-
0:26 - 0:28worry, and in my case, depression.
-
0:28 - 0:30I graduated from high school
four and half years ago. -
0:30 - 0:32I've never really had solid plans
-
0:32 - 0:34for post-secondary education.
-
0:34 - 0:36I was too indecisive
-
0:36 - 0:39and I always had this desire
to kind of create my own path, -
0:39 - 0:41even though I didn't know what it was.
-
0:41 - 0:44This made me feel really
different from everyone else. -
0:44 - 0:45It seemed like everyone
-
0:45 - 0:47had their entire lives planned out
-
0:47 - 0:48and were packing their bags
-
0:48 - 0:50and heading off for new adventures.
-
0:50 - 0:52And there I was, just being.
-
0:52 - 0:55Unaware of the next step to take.
-
0:55 - 0:57After high school, I worked for a year
-
0:57 - 1:01before finally setting my sights
on a goal to travel. -
1:01 - 1:03I ended up working three jobs
-
1:03 - 1:06over 70 hours a week.
-
1:06 - 1:07I never really took the time to relax
-
1:07 - 1:09or to feel stress or worry.
-
1:09 - 1:11I was just too busy,
and none of it mattered. -
1:11 - 1:13'Cause in the end,
I would quit all my jobs -
1:13 - 1:17and get on a plane and fly to
the other side of the world. -
1:17 - 1:19And the first month of my trip
-
1:19 - 1:21was absolutly incredible.
-
1:21 - 1:23I was in the most beautiful place
-
1:23 - 1:25with my best friend in the entire world.
-
1:25 - 1:27I was seeing things or doing things
-
1:27 - 1:29I never thought I would be doing.
-
1:29 - 1:32But then, something started to happen.
-
1:32 - 1:34I would be seeing things with my eyes,
-
1:34 - 1:36and doing things with my hands,
-
1:36 - 1:38but I couldn't feel them.
-
1:38 - 1:39It wouldn't register in here,
-
1:39 - 1:41and it wouldn't register in here.
-
1:41 - 1:46I'd somehow gained this inability
to feel excitement. -
1:46 - 1:49The thing was I never
took the time to relax at home, -
1:49 - 1:51and I never took the time
to connect with myself. -
1:51 - 1:55So I definitely didn't know how to do it
on the other side of the world -
1:55 - 1:57when I had the time for it.
-
1:57 - 1:59I was just completely unsatisfied.
-
1:59 - 2:03It felt like something
was constantly missing. -
2:03 - 2:06And that thing that was missing
was my happiness. -
2:06 - 2:10By the time I came home,
I experienced a short high, -
2:10 - 2:14the realization that I had
accomplished my one goal. -
2:14 - 2:15But it did not last long.
-
2:15 - 2:19It was followed by
that feeling of, "what now?". -
2:19 - 2:20Fastfoward a few months,
-
2:20 - 2:23and I was attending
my first day of university. -
2:23 - 2:27Long story short,
it was all downhill from there. -
2:27 - 2:29I found myself skipping class,
-
2:29 - 2:31so that I could go home and sleep.
-
2:31 - 2:32And come December,
-
2:32 - 2:35I decided not to return
for the second semester. -
2:46 - 2:50I was always searching for
something new, and for something better. -
2:50 - 2:53Nothing ahead in front
of me was good enough. -
2:53 - 2:55And as you can imagine this really
-
2:55 - 2:57had a negatively affect
all of my relationships. -
2:57 - 3:00I had absolutely everything that I needed.
-
3:00 - 3:03But I hated everything
for no reason at all. -
3:03 - 3:06I was really disconnected from the world.
-
3:06 - 3:09I was on the verge of tears all the time.
-
3:09 - 3:12There was a lot of times
where I'd be sitting and doing nothing. -
3:12 - 3:13And all of a sudden,
-
3:13 - 3:15tears would just start
pouring from my eyes. -
3:15 - 3:17I had no ability to control or stop them.
-
3:17 - 3:19My mom would ask me what was wrong,
-
3:19 - 3:23and all I could say is,
"I am just so unhappy". -
3:23 - 3:26I felt like I had these concrete slabs
inside my chest -
3:26 - 3:30that wouldn't let me
feel anything, except misery. -
3:30 - 3:31I finally got to the point
-
3:31 - 3:34where I was so unhappy
with being unhappy, -
3:34 - 3:36and I realized I was going
to be the only one -
3:36 - 3:38who could start chiseling away
-
3:38 - 3:40at that concrete inside of me.
-
3:40 - 3:41There were a lot of things
-
3:41 - 3:43that contributed to my depression.
-
3:43 - 3:45But pressure, an absence of goals,
-
3:45 - 3:46and a lack of confidence
-
3:46 - 3:49were all the major contributors.
-
3:49 - 3:51Now throughout our life,
-
3:51 - 3:53we face a lot of different pressures
-
3:53 - 3:56coming from every different direction,
especially in our teen years. -
3:56 - 3:59There is a pressure from society,
from our parents, -
3:59 - 4:01from our friends and our peers,
-
4:01 - 4:02and most importantly,
-
4:02 - 4:04a lot of pressure from within ourselves.
-
4:04 - 4:05We don't want to let people down.
-
4:05 - 4:08We don't want to be labeled as a failure.
-
4:08 - 4:09But what we need to remember
-
4:09 - 4:11is that we have to please ourselves first.
-
4:11 - 4:13If we are constantly
living for other people, -
4:13 - 4:16we are never going to feel good enough.
-
4:16 - 4:20Find what is meaningful to you
and use that to drive you. -
4:20 - 4:23Try and surround yourself
with like-minded people, -
4:23 - 4:26people with the same beliefs
and goals and values as you. -
4:26 - 4:29When you do that,
you won't feel so different, -
4:29 - 4:30because you won't be.
-
4:30 - 4:33And try and explain to
those who don't understand -
4:33 - 4:35that if you knew
what your future looked like, -
4:35 - 4:38what your fate was,
you'd be working towards it. -
4:38 - 4:40That being stuck is not a choice.
-
4:40 - 4:43And it definitely wasn't
a choice that I made. -
4:43 - 4:47That feeling of being stuck
is absolutely terrifying. -
4:47 - 4:51That desire of wanting to do something
but not knowing what it is, -
4:51 - 4:54or having an idea,
but shying away from it, -
4:54 - 4:57and fear that it is somehow wrong.
-
5:02 - 5:05It is this lack of purpose
that makes us stuck. -
5:05 - 5:07It is this lack of purpose
-
5:07 - 5:10that doesn't get us out of bed
in the morning. -
5:11 - 5:14The more that my mind changed,
the more frustrated I became. -
5:14 - 5:17The more negative my attitude
and entire life became. -
5:17 - 5:22My brain was on this negative routine
that wouldn't stop. -
5:22 - 5:25Everything sucked. I hated everything.
-
5:25 - 5:29And believe me when I say it is possible
to reprogram your brain. -
5:29 - 5:32But believe me when I say
it is not an easy task. -
5:32 - 5:35For me, I did it through the use of goals.
-
5:35 - 5:37Not goals for the next five or ten years,
-
5:37 - 5:41goals for the next hour, for the next day,
for the next week. -
5:41 - 5:45These small, short-term attainable goals
is what gets you get out of bed. -
5:45 - 5:48It gives you purpose, it gives you
something to work towards. -
5:50 - 5:52And positivity and negativity
are simply routines -
5:52 - 5:54that our brains are used to practicing.
-
5:54 - 6:00They get stuck on this loop.
Goals are what make you unstuck. -
6:00 - 6:02They give you something
to work towards. -
6:02 - 6:05They create positive momentum
and forward momentum. -
6:05 - 6:08And eventually, when it gets easier
to do those smaller things, -
6:08 - 6:12you can focus on larger challenges.
-
6:12 - 6:15Now I'd like to talk about confidence
a little bit. -
6:15 - 6:18In my opinion, it is something
that we all need a lot more of. -
6:18 - 6:20That feeling inside of you.
-
6:20 - 6:22If you can't rely on yourself,
-
6:22 - 6:24how is anybody else supposed to?
-
6:24 - 6:30The best piece of advice I've ever
gotten was from a Hall's wrapper. -
6:30 - 6:31I was having the worst day
-
6:31 - 6:34just really sad
in the worst period of my life. -
6:34 - 6:36And on top of things, I was sick.
-
6:36 - 6:38I'd go to open up this little candy.
-
6:38 - 6:41And it literally made me
stop in my tracks. -
6:41 - 6:45On this are five simple small words
-
6:45 - 6:46that just hold so much power
-
6:46 - 6:49and put everything
into perspective for me. -
6:49 - 6:51It says "don't give up on you."
-
6:51 - 6:52That's so important.
-
6:52 - 6:55We can't give up on ourselves.
-
6:55 - 6:57If you are having a bad day,
you can't give up. -
6:57 - 6:59Everybody has bad days.
-
6:59 - 7:00Everybody has those days
-
7:00 - 7:03where getting out of bed
seems like most impossible -
7:03 - 7:06and unrealistic thing in the entire world.
-
7:06 - 7:07But it's okay to have those bad days.
-
7:07 - 7:09We are all human.
-
7:09 - 7:12And sometimes,
those bad days just -
7:12 - 7:15are our body telling us
that we need to slow down. -
7:15 - 7:17That we need to take a step back,
-
7:17 - 7:20and relax and focus on what is going on.
-
7:20 - 7:23Why are we having those bad days?
-
7:25 - 7:27I feel myself slipping sometimes
-
7:27 - 7:30and it scares the absolute
crap out of me. -
7:30 - 7:31But that's when I have to stop,
-
7:31 - 7:33and take a step back and say
-
7:33 - 7:35I am confident in everything
I have learned. -
7:35 - 7:37I am confident in my abilities,
-
7:37 - 7:38I am confident in myself.
-
7:38 - 7:43And I won't let myself slip
anymore than this one day. -
7:43 - 7:46You can let yourself have a bad day
but learn from them. -
7:46 - 7:48And in the future,
-
7:48 - 7:51you will be able to possibly
prevent them from happening again. -
7:52 - 7:57And if those bad days keep coming,
don't be afraid to ask for help. -
7:57 - 8:00I was never one
to ask questions or ask for help. -
8:00 - 8:03But in the end,
that's what ended up saving me. -
8:03 - 8:07There are people out there to listen to you,
to offer advice, to guide you. -
8:07 - 8:09Or in my case, my therapist listened to me
-
8:09 - 8:11bawl my eyes out for an hour every week.
-
8:11 - 8:14But they are there for you.
-
8:21 - 8:24No one is ever gonna understand exactly
what you're feeling inside. -
8:24 - 8:26No one is gonna understand those feelings,
-
8:26 - 8:28no one is gonna understand that sadness.
-
8:28 - 8:32But when the time comes,
and you are ready to open up to people, -
8:32 - 8:35the more that you open up to them,
the more that they will open up to you. -
8:35 - 8:38I had friends for years and years.
-
8:38 - 8:40And when the time came, and I opened up,
-
8:40 - 8:41by the end of our conversation,
-
8:41 - 8:44we were finishing each other's sentences.
-
8:44 - 8:47People are there to listen to you
and to help you. -
8:47 - 8:51Now how can we stay resilient
through all of life's transitions and lulls? -
8:51 - 8:53We need to have a strong mind,
-
8:53 - 8:55a strong body, and a strong soul.
-
8:55 - 8:57Take care of your body.
-
8:57 - 9:01The stronger and healthier that you are,
the more capable you will be -
9:01 - 9:04to break free of all
that negativity that surrounds you. -
9:04 - 9:07And be kind to yourself.
It's okay to be unsure. -
9:07 - 9:09It's okay to have those bad days.
-
9:09 - 9:10We are all human.
-
9:10 - 9:12We just need to learn from them.
-
9:12 - 9:14And take a chance, make a change.
-
9:14 - 9:16If you try, and you fail,
-
9:16 - 9:19that's one more thing
that you learned about yourself. -
9:21 - 9:25We are always learning
no matter what kind of lesson it is. -
9:25 - 9:27It might not be in a textbook
or in the classroom. -
9:27 - 9:32But a valuable lesson can be learned
from every success and from every failure. -
9:32 - 9:36Find what works for you.
Everybody is so different. -
9:36 - 9:39And you know what, by getting lost,
it will help you find yourself. -
9:39 - 9:42I took a huge chance
in coming out to Nelson. -
9:42 - 9:46But it turns out that this was the exact
change of pace that I needed for myself -
9:46 - 9:50and I finally feel like
I belong somewhere. -
9:50 - 9:53Those concrete blocks
are always gonna be inside of me. -
9:53 - 9:56I am gonna be chiseling away at them
every single day for the rest of my life. -
9:56 - 9:59But I am confident in myself,
I am confident in my abilities, -
9:59 - 10:01and I am confident in everything
-
10:01 - 10:03that I've learned in all the time
-
10:03 - 10:05that I have taken
to be comfortable with myself. -
10:05 - 10:07But I will still chiseling away at them
-
10:07 - 10:10every single day for the rest of my life.
-
10:10 - 10:12And nobody has it completely figured out.
-
10:12 - 10:15If they say that they do, they are wrong.
-
10:15 - 10:17Things can change within the next day,
-
10:17 - 10:20the next week,
the next month, the next year. -
10:20 - 10:23Things change with
the snap of your fingers. -
10:23 - 10:25But through all those changes,
you have to remember, -
10:25 - 10:27don't give up on you.

Hi,
I think the transcription is perfectly fine. I just have some doubts regarding subtitle length.
I don't know if you're familiar with these guidelines:
http://translations.ted.org/wiki/How_to_Tackle_a_Transcript#Cueing.2Ftiming_the_subtitles
where the recommended length is up to 84 characters. The ones in this video are somewhere around this at the least. The speaker's speed is very slow so that helps in not making such a big deal out of this, not affecting reading speed index.
I leave this up to you. I would recommend using some line breaks following those same guidelines just to make it a little better.
