Don't Give Up on You | Kacey Gal | TEDxSelkirkCollegeED

  • 0:06 - 0:08
    The future is scary.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
The millions of options and paths
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    lying in front of us
    can be greatly detrimental
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    to our well-being.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    Life transitions and loss,
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    the inability to decide
what to do or who to be.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    Those times when you
    say to yourself "what now?"
  • 0:22 - 0:26
can create a lot of stress, anxiety,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
worry, and in my case, depression.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    I graduated from high school
    four and half years ago.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
I've never really had solid plans
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    for post-secondary education.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    I was too indecisive
  • 0:36 - 0:39
and I always had this desire
to kind of create my own path,
  • 0:39 - 0:41
even though I didn't know what it was.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    This made me feel really
    different from everyone else.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    It seemed like everyone

  • 0:45 - 0:47
had their entire lives planned out
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    and were packing their bags
  • 0:48 - 0:50
and heading off for new adventures.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
And there I was, just being.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
Unaware of the next step to take.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
After high school, I worked for a year
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    before finally setting my sights
    on a goal to travel.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
I ended up working three jobs
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    over 70 hours a week.
  • 1:06 - 1:07
I never really took the time to relax
  • 1:07 - 1:09
or to feel stress or worry.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    I was just too busy,
    and none of it mattered.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    'Cause in the end,
I would quit all my jobs
  • 1:13 - 1:17
and get on a plane and fly to
the other side of the world.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
And the first month of my trip
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    was absolutly incredible.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
I was in the most beautiful place
  • 1:23 - 1:25
with my best friend in the entire world.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
I was seeing things or doing things
  • 1:27 - 1:29
I never thought I would be doing.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
But then, something started to happen.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
I would be seeing things with my eyes,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
and doing things with my hands,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    but I couldn't feel them.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    It wouldn't register in here,
  • 1:39 - 1:41
and it wouldn't register in here.
  • 1:41 - 1:46
    I'd somehow gained this inability
    to feel excitement.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    The thing was I never
took the time to relax at home,
  • 1:49 - 1:51
and I never took the time
    to connect with myself.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
So I definitely didn't know how to do it
on the other side of the world
  • 1:55 - 1:57
when I had the time for it.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    I was just completely unsatisfied.
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    It felt like something
    was constantly missing.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
And that thing that was missing
    was my happiness.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
By the time I came home,
    I experienced a short high,
  • 2:10 - 2:14
    the realization that I had
    accomplished my one goal.
  • 2:14 - 2:15
But it did not last long.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    It was followed by
    that feeling of, "what now?".
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    Fastfoward a few months,
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    and I was attending
    my first day of university.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
    Long story short,
it was all downhill from there.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    I found myself skipping class,
  • 2:29 - 2:31
so that I could go home and sleep.
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    And come December,
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    I decided not to return
    for the second semester.
  • 2:46 - 2:50
    I was always searching for
something new, and for something better.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    Nothing ahead in front
    of me was good enough.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
And as you can imagine this really
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    had a negatively affect
    all of my relationships.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
I had absolutely everything that I needed.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    But I hated everything
    for no reason at all.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
I was really disconnected from the world.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
I was on the verge of tears all the time.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
There was a lot of times
where I'd be sitting and doing nothing.
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    And all of a sudden,
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    tears would just start
    pouring from my eyes.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
I had no ability to control or stop them.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
My mom would ask me what was wrong,
  • 3:19 - 3:23
and all I could say is,
    "I am just so unhappy".
  • 3:23 - 3:26
I felt like I had these concrete slabs
    inside my chest
  • 3:26 - 3:30
    that wouldn't let me
    feel anything, except misery.
  • 3:30 - 3:31
I finally got to the point
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    where I was so unhappy
    with being unhappy,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
and I realized I was going
    to be the only one
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    who could start chiseling away
  • 3:38 - 3:40
at that concrete inside of me.
  • 3:40 - 3:41
There were a lot of things
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    that contributed to my depression.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
But pressure, an absence of goals,
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    and a lack of confidence
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    were all the major contributors.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    Now throughout our life,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
we face a lot of different pressures
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    coming from every different direction,
    especially in our teen years.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
There is a pressure from society,
    from our parents,
  • 3:59 - 4:01
from our friends and our peers,
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    and most importantly,
  • 4:02 - 4:04
a lot of pressure from within ourselves.
  • 4:04 - 4:05
We don't want to let people down.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
We don't want to be labeled as a failure.
  • 4:08 - 4:09
But what we need to remember
  • 4:09 - 4:11
is that we have to please ourselves first.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    If we are constantly
    living for other people,
  • 4:13 - 4:16
we are never going to feel good enough.
  • 4:16 - 4:20
Find what is meaningful to you
and use that to drive you.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    Try and surround yourself
    with like-minded people,
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    people with the same beliefs
and goals and values as you.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    When you do that,
    you won't feel so different,
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    because you won't be.
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    And try and explain to
    those who don't understand
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    that if you knew
    what your future looked like,
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    what your fate was,
    you'd be working towards it.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
That being stuck is not a choice.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    And it definitely wasn't
    a choice that I made.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
    That feeling of being stuck
    is absolutely terrifying.
  • 4:47 - 4:51
That desire of wanting to do something
but not knowing what it is,
  • 4:51 - 4:54
    or having an idea,
    but shying away from it,
  • 4:54 - 4:57
and fear that it is somehow wrong.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
It is this lack of purpose
    that makes us stuck.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
It is this lack of purpose
  • 5:07 - 5:10
that doesn't get us out of bed
    in the morning.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
The more that my mind changed,
    the more frustrated I became.
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    The more negative my attitude
    and entire life became.
  • 5:17 - 5:22
My brain was on this negative routine
    that wouldn't stop.
  • 5:22 - 5:25
    Everything sucked. I hated everything.
  • 5:25 - 5:29
And believe me when I say it is possible
    to reprogram your brain.
  • 5:29 - 5:32
But believe me when I say
it is not an easy task.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
For me, I did it through the use of goals.
  • 5:35 - 5:37
Not goals for the next five or ten years,
  • 5:37 - 5:41
goals for the next hour, for the next day,
    for the next week.
  • 5:41 - 5:45
    These small, short-term attainable goals
is what gets you get out of bed.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
It gives you purpose, it gives you
    something to work towards.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    And positivity and negativity
    are simply routines
  • 5:52 - 5:54
that our brains are used to practicing.
  • 5:54 - 6:00
They get stuck on this loop.
Goals are what make you unstuck.
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    They give you something
    to work towards.
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    They create positive momentum
    and forward momentum.
  • 6:05 - 6:08
And eventually, when it gets easier
    to do those smaller things,
  • 6:08 - 6:12
you can focus on larger challenges.
  • 6:12 - 6:15
Now I'd like to talk about confidence
    a little bit.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
In my opinion, it is something
that we all need a lot more of.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    That feeling inside of you.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
If you can't rely on yourself,
  • 6:22 - 6:24
how is anybody else supposed to?
  • 6:24 - 6:30
The best piece of advice I've ever
gotten was from a Hall's wrapper.
  • 6:30 - 6:31
I was having the worst day
  • 6:31 - 6:34
    just really sad
in the worst period of my life.
  • 6:34 - 6:36
And on top of things, I was sick.
  • 6:36 - 6:38
I'd go to open up this little candy.
  • 6:38 - 6:41
    And it literally made me
    stop in my tracks.
  • 6:41 - 6:45
On this are five simple small words
  • 6:45 - 6:46
that just hold so much power
  • 6:46 - 6:49
    and put everything
    into perspective for me.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
It says "don't give up on you."
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    That's so important.
  • 6:52 - 6:55
We can't give up on ourselves.
  • 6:55 - 6:57
If you are having a bad day,
    you can't give up.
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    Everybody has bad days.
  • 6:59 - 7:00
    Everybody has those days
  • 7:00 - 7:03
    where getting out of bed
    seems like most impossible
  • 7:03 - 7:06
and unrealistic thing in the entire world.
  • 7:06 - 7:07
But it's okay to have those bad days.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    We are all human.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
    And sometimes,
    those bad days just
  • 7:12 - 7:15
    are our body telling us
that we need to slow down.
  • 7:15 - 7:17
That we need to take a step back,
  • 7:17 - 7:20
and relax and focus on what is going on.
  • 7:20 - 7:23
Why are we having those bad days?
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    I feel myself slipping sometimes
  • 7:27 - 7:30
    and it scares the absolute
    crap out of me.
  • 7:30 - 7:31
But that's when I have to stop,
  • 7:31 - 7:33
and take a step back and say
  • 7:33 - 7:35
    I am confident in everything
    I have learned.
  • 7:35 - 7:37
I am confident in my abilities,
  • 7:37 - 7:38
    I am confident in myself.
  • 7:38 - 7:43
And I won't let myself slip
    anymore than this one day.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
You can let yourself have a bad day
    but learn from them.
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    And in the future,
  • 7:48 - 7:51
you will be able to possibly
    prevent them from happening again.
  • 7:52 - 7:57
And if those bad days keep coming,
don't be afraid to ask for help.
  • 7:57 - 8:00
    I was never one
to ask questions or ask for help.
  • 8:00 - 8:03
    But in the end,
that's what ended up saving me.
  • 8:03 - 8:07
There are people out there to listen to you,
to offer advice, to guide you.
  • 8:07 - 8:09
Or in my case, my therapist listened to me
  • 8:09 - 8:11
bawl my eyes out for an hour every week.
  • 8:11 - 8:14
But they are there for you.
  • 8:21 - 8:24
No one is ever gonna understand exactly
    what you're feeling inside.
  • 8:24 - 8:26
No one is gonna understand those feelings,
  • 8:26 - 8:28
no one is gonna understand that sadness.
  • 8:28 - 8:32
    But when the time comes,
and you are ready to open up to people,
  • 8:32 - 8:35
the more that you open up to them,
the more that they will open up to you.
  • 8:35 - 8:38
I had friends for years and years.
  • 8:38 - 8:40
And when the time came, and I opened up,
  • 8:40 - 8:41
by the end of our conversation,
  • 8:41 - 8:44
we were finishing each other's sentences.
  • 8:44 - 8:47
People are there to listen to you
    and to help you.
  • 8:47 - 8:51
Now how can we stay resilient
through all of life's transitions and lulls?
  • 8:51 - 8:53
We need to have a strong mind,
  • 8:53 - 8:55
a strong body, and a strong soul.
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    Take care of your body.
  • 8:57 - 9:01
The stronger and healthier that you are,
the more capable you will be
  • 9:01 - 9:04
    to break free of all
    that negativity that surrounds you.
  • 9:04 - 9:07
    And be kind to yourself.
    It's okay to be unsure.
  • 9:07 - 9:09
It's okay to have those bad days.
  • 9:09 - 9:10
    We are all human.
  • 9:10 - 9:12
We just need to learn from them.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
And take a chance, make a change.
  • 9:14 - 9:16
If you try, and you fail,
  • 9:16 - 9:19
    that's one more thing
    that you learned about yourself.
  • 9:21 - 9:25
    We are always learning
no matter what kind of lesson it is.
  • 9:25 - 9:27
It might not be in a textbook
    or in the classroom.
  • 9:27 - 9:32
But a valuable lesson can be learned
from every success and from every failure.
  • 9:32 - 9:36
    Find what works for you.
    Everybody is so different.
  • 9:36 - 9:39
And you know what, by getting lost,
it will help you find yourself.
  • 9:39 - 9:42
    I took a huge chance
    in coming out to Nelson.
  • 9:42 - 9:46
But it turns out that this was the exact
change of pace that I needed for myself
  • 9:46 - 9:50
    and I finally feel like
    I belong somewhere.
  • 9:50 - 9:53
    Those concrete blocks
are always gonna be inside of me.
  • 9:53 - 9:56
I am gonna be chiseling away at them
every single day for the rest of my life.
  • 9:56 - 9:59
But I am confident in myself,
I am confident in my abilities,
  • 9:59 - 10:01
and I am confident in everything
  • 10:01 - 10:03
that I've learned in all the time
  • 10:03 - 10:05
    that I have taken
    to be comfortable with myself.
  • 10:05 - 10:07
But I will still chiseling away at them
  • 10:07 - 10:10
every single day for the rest of my life.
  • 10:10 - 10:12
And nobody has it completely figured out.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
If they say that they do, they are wrong.
  • 10:15 - 10:17
Things can change within the next day,
  • 10:17 - 10:20
    the next week,
the next month, the next year.
  • 10:20 - 10:23
    Things change with
    the snap of your fingers.
  • 10:23 - 10:25
    But through all those changes,
    you have to remember,
  • 10:25 - 10:27
    don't give up on you.

  • Hi,
I think the transcription is perfectly fine. I just have some doubts regarding subtitle length.
I don't know if you're familiar with these guidelines:
    http://translations.ted.org/wiki/How_to_Tackle_a_Transcript#Cueing.2Ftiming_the_subtitles

where the recommended length is up to 84 characters. The ones in this video are somewhere around this at the least. The speaker's speed is very slow so that helps in not making such a big deal out of this, not affecting reading speed index.

I leave this up to you. I would recommend using some line breaks following those same guidelines just to make it a little better.
