  • Not Synced
The first Hack-A-Thon was not until
  • Not Synced
another two months, so I still had
  • Not Synced
    never done a Hack-a-thon before.
  • Not Synced
All I knew was, I want to have a thousand
  • Not Synced
Of them in the first 5 years. and then be
  • Not Synced
able to help a billion people in the next
  • Not Synced
    25.
  • Not Synced
    [Music]
  • Not Synced
-"Amaro, What's up with you man?"
  • Not Synced
-"I'm good, man, I'm good. Like life is--"
  • Not Synced
"--Life feels like it's getting back
  • Not Synced
    on track right now."
  • Not Synced
    -"that's what's up, that's what's up. uh
  • Not Synced
I would say things are definitely hectic
  • Not Synced
on my end. Trying to uh, keep my head my
  • Not Synced
head above water. But you know,
  • Not Synced
    But you know, I'm
  • Not Synced
And sharing another great entreprantl story
  • Not Synced
Yeah man, this thing just hit me
  • Not Synced
    out of nowhere.
  • Not Synced
plenty of fluids and much rest.
  • Not Synced
Today's episode, we're going to be talking
  • Not Synced
    to...
  • Not Synced
he just brings a lot of creative minds
  • Not Synced
    together.
  • Not Synced
the good work he's doing there.
  • Not Synced
    So, you know,
  • Not Synced
    Yeah, and you know
  • Not Synced
Such as google, coca cola, ford
  • Not Synced
You know, a lot of great companies and he
  • Not Synced
actually, uh, shares some of different
  • Not Synced
some of these anecdotes about how
  • Not Synced
just a variety of different topics
  • Not Synced
    Um, it's basically like
  • Not Synced
The ways of making your process scalable.
  • Not Synced
  • Not Synced
where it saves you time and money
  • Not Synced
    Yeah, yeah
  • Not Synced
That's something that Joey's been, uh,
  • Not Synced
    passionate about.
  • Not Synced
Hit subscribe right now. Not later, but
  • Not Synced
right now. You're starting to sound like an
  • Not Synced
I love it, I love it.
  • Not Synced
Let's get into the show, bro.
  • Not Synced
    [Hip Hop Music]
  • Not Synced
    The first time, uh
  • Not Synced
    We had some technical difficulties
  • Not Synced
    Not a problem.
  • Not Synced
I'm happy to have you on the show.
  • Not Synced
McDonalds did a spotlight on you for Black
  • Not Synced
    History Month
  • Not Synced
    The community assembly
  • Not Synced
    You're doing your thing
  • Not Synced
Just helping people find a way to carve
  • Not Synced
    out a path
  • Not Synced
When I was living in Atlanta Georgia
  • Not Synced
    Where it's focused on
  • Not Synced
There's just a lot of gems
  • Not Synced
But before, before we do that
  • Not Synced
What is that one Hip Hop song that gets
  • Not Synced
    you hyped up for that
  • Not Synced
    It changes man. You know,
  • Not Synced
    what I'm saying?
  • Not Synced
    So, uh, recently
  • Not Synced
    It's not a recent song, I'd say
  • Not Synced
    That's been my kick
  • Not Synced
So, you know let's get right into it,
  • Not Synced
    you know,
  • Not Synced
Black History Month was last month.
  • Not Synced
    That was definitely
  • Not Synced
because you have two different companies
  • Not Synced
    that you're currently working on
  • Not Synced
which one did you start working on first?
  • Not Synced
    Okay, well
  • Not Synced
    What were the
  • Not Synced
Yeah, so, as I kinda alluded to
  • Not Synced
After I graduated and did it full time.
  • Not Synced
    Yada, Yada, Yada.
  • Not Synced
Long story shirt: in the process of
  • Not Synced
How to raise money, so on and so forth
  • Not Synced
How to be better by using these philosophies
  • Not Synced
    Trying to like, I realize
  • Not Synced
I didn't know what I was going to do
  • Not Synced
    Eventually I landed on
  • Not Synced
people in underserved areas all around
  • Not Synced
    the country.
  • Not Synced
All this amazing stuff that was free.
  • Not Synced
    Cause I read so much.
  • Not Synced
And I needed a better way to distribute
  • Not Synced
the content that I was reading all the
  • Not Synced
    A lot of like
  • Not Synced
Was there a common thing that they kept
  • Not Synced
    asking
  • Not Synced
    The major thing was funding
  • Not Synced
    That wasn't my wheelhouse.
  • Not Synced
Or take care of the same expenses
  • Not Synced
so again, you're going to raise money
  • Not Synced
    to spend
  • Not Synced
If you're going to spend it on something
  • Not Synced
    Well, I'll I'll tell you
  • Not Synced
So, at the same time I was putting this
  • Not Synced
    Facebook group together.
  • Not Synced
Honestly, they let me do the events
  • Not Synced
    and then they're like
  • Not Synced
Why don't you just do these events for us?
  • Not Synced
    Yada Yada Yada
  • Not Synced
Free alcohol, free food, free admission,
  • Not Synced
    free celebrity dj.
  • Not Synced
And that's the first time the group had
  • Not Synced
    And I saw all the
  • Not Synced
    Across multiple generations
  • Not Synced
Wow. What if we used this type of
  • Not Synced
environment to raise money for the
  • Not Synced
You kind of take their talent
  • Not Synced
So that was really one of my first
  • Not Synced
My ability to pull together really
  • Not Synced
    talented people.
  • Not Synced
    You just provided a clear
  • Not Synced
but, I mean, but from that
  • Not Synced
what I was actually trying to pitch.
  • Not Synced
Finding out what people really care about
  • Not Synced
    I learned a lot.
  • Not Synced
and applying them in a non-tech way.
  • Not Synced
But, yeah, it's proved to be real
  • Not Synced
    successful
  • Not Synced
    Aw, man.
  • Not Synced
To make a long story short
  • Not Synced
they often say, some people believe in God
  • Not Synced
Was calling to use this facebook group
  • Not Synced
    for good, right?
  • Not Synced
figure out how I'm gonna help out
  • Not Synced
Cause I got a great opportunity.
  • Not Synced
    It wasn't until October
  • Not Synced
That would bring more people of color
  • Not Synced
    into the ecosystem.
  • Not Synced
    One of which was for
  • Not Synced
    And so at that point.
  • Not Synced
    But I had this idea
  • Not Synced
    it's a great way to
  • Not Synced
I did it. The first one was on March
  • Not Synced
It wasn't like a throw down the
  • Not Synced
    My first thought was
  • Not Synced
    Then my second thought was
  • Not Synced
I took it as a challenge and
  • Not Synced
    Why should they get involved
  • Not Synced
    What happens there that makes
  • Not Synced
If I do like a hashtag of myself
  • Not Synced
    I would put
  • Not Synced
So when you come to our stuff
  • Not Synced
    More like a house party.
  • Not Synced
    20 or 30 people there.
  • Not Synced
    Good up tempo music.
  • Not Synced
It's just not people of color.
  • Not Synced
To help out people who need it the most
  • Not Synced
Very talented people with a very fun
  • Not Synced
Yeah, that definitely sounds like a
  • Not Synced
    I was just gonna say
  • Not Synced
If you think back to college or high
  • Not Synced
    school or something like that.
  • Not Synced
    You bs, you wait
  • Not Synced
Just imagine you never even talk
  • Not Synced
    You might have
  • Not Synced
And then you gotta present it in front
  • Not Synced
    of every
  • Not Synced
You throw people together for 2 days
  • Not Synced
    maybe 3 days
  • Not Synced
    That sounded like
  • Not Synced
I drink a lot of energy drinks
  • Not Synced
    It was fun, though.
  • Not Synced
    We have weekend
  • Not Synced
    We have demo days
  • Not Synced
    It's all
  • Not Synced
When did you start knowing that you could
  • Not Synced
    How did you identify
  • Not Synced
    We first started
  • Not Synced
    Our thesis
  • Not Synced
It's just that whole ecosystem of change
  • Not Synced
    Change was going unmade
  • Not Synced
    Instead of creating new non-profits.
  • Not Synced
    It was just one day
  • Not Synced
    Anybody would even come out.
  • Not Synced
More work needed to be done, outside of
  • Not Synced
    just the
  • Not Synced
    Okay, so maybe we'll do
  • Not Synced
And then we give everyone the teams
  • Not Synced
So that's the one that we had at google
  • Not Synced
    This team still did not
  • Not Synced
The events are cool, great energy.
  • Not Synced
And so now, to make a long story short
  • Not Synced
Coming up with an innovative idea
  • Not Synced
    Ideas or solutions
  • Not Synced
    The second event is
  • Not Synced
    Then volunteer marketers
  • Not Synced
    They come up with
  • Not Synced
    About a month after that
  • Not Synced
So, basically within the span of six months.
  • Not Synced
    Build a product.
  • Not Synced
    Hype around it
  • Not Synced
    Move it better
  • Not Synced
    Right there that's
  • Not Synced
    Even the business motto.
  • Not Synced
    Is it the final presentation
  • Not Synced
    pitching their ideas
  • Not Synced
I mean, yeah...you have some investors
  • Not Synced
So a lot of investors don't really know
  • Not Synced
Yeah, yeah. It's a tough deal.
  • Not Synced
    And we're learning , we're learning still.
  • Not Synced
    Just pitching it was definitely
  • Not Synced
In that, we start to have
  • Not Synced
Have you seen that sort of support from
  • Not Synced
    I'll be interested to see
  • Not Synced
Yeah, people are still figuring out
  • Not Synced
    People our generation
  • Not Synced
