Multiplication 6: Multiple Digit Numbers

  • 0:01 - 0:03
We now have the general tools
  • 0:03 - 0:05
to really tackle any multiplication problems.
  • 0:05 - 0:08
So in this video I'm just going to do a ton of examples.
  • 0:08 - 0:13
So let's start off with-- and I'll start in yellow.
  • 0:13 - 0:20
Let's start off with thirty-two times eighteen.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
Say eight times two is sixteen.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
Well, I'll do it in our head this time
  • 0:26 - 0:28
because you don't always have all this space to work with.
  • 0:29 - 0:34
So eight times two is sixteen.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    Put the one up there.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    Eight times three is twenty-four.
  • 0:38 - 0:43
    Twenty-four plus one is twenty-five.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
So eight times thirty-two was two hundred fifty-six.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
Now we're going to have to multiply this one,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
which is really a ten, times thirty-two.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
I'll underline it with the orange.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
One times two-- oh, we have to be very careful here.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    One times two is two.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
So you might say hey, let me stick a two down there.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    Remember, this isn't a one.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
This is a ten, so we have to stick a zero there
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    to remember that.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
So ten times two is twenty.
  • 1:11 - 1:12
Or you say one times two is two,
  • 1:12 - 1:15
but you're putting it in the tens place, so you still get twenty.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
So ten times two is twenty.
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    It works out.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    Then one times three.
  • 1:20 - 1:21
And we have to be very careful.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
Let's get rid of what we had from before.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    One times three is three.
  • 1:26 - 1:29
There's nothing to add here, so you just get a three.
  • 1:29 - 1:35
And so you get ten times thirty-two is three hundred twenty.
  • 1:35 - 1:36
This one right here, that's a ten.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    Ten plus eight is eighteen.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
So now we just add up the two numbers.
  • 1:42 - 1:42
    You add them up.
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    Six plus zero is six.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    Five plus two is seven.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    Two plus three is five.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    Let's keep going.
  • 1:51 - 1:57
    Let's do ninety-nine times eighty-eight.
  • 1:57 - 1:58
That's going to give us a big number!
  • 1:58 - 2:03
    Eight times nine is seventy-two.
  • 2:03 - 2:07
    Stick the seven up there.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
And then you have eight times nine again.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
Eight times nine is seventy-two, but now you have the seven up here.
  • 2:11 - 2:16
So seventy-two plus seven is seventy-nine.
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    Fair enough.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    Now we're done with this.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    Let's just delete it
  • 2:19 - 2:22
just so that we don't get confused in our next step.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
In our next step, we're going to multiply this eight now times ninety-nine.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
But this eight is an eighty.
  • 2:27 - 2:28
So let's stick a zero down there.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    Eight times nine is seventy-two.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    Stick a seven up there.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
Then eight times nine is seventy-two.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    Plus seven is seventy-nine.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    Two plus zero is two.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    Let me switch colors.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
    Nine plus two is eleven.
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    Carry the one.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    One plus seven is eight.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    Eight plus nine is seventeen.
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    Carry the one.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    One plus seven is eight.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    Eight thousand seven hundred twelve.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    Let's keep going.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    Can't do enough of these.
  • 3:01 - 3:09
    All right, fifty-three times seventy-eight.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
I think you're getting the hang of it now.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
Let's multiply eight times fifty-three first.
  • 3:13 - 3:17
So eight times three is twenty-four.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    Stick the two up there.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    Eight times five is forty.
  • 3:22 - 3:27
    Forty plus two is forty-two.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
Now we're going to have to deal with that seven.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
That seven right there, which is really a seventy.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
So we got to remember to put the zero there.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
Seven times three, and let's get rid of this.
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    Don't want to get confused.
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    Seven times three is twenty-one.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
Put the one there and put the two up here.
  • 3:43 - 3:47
    Seven times five is thirty-five.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    Plus two is thirty-seven.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    Now we're ready to add.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    Four plus zero is four.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    Two plus one is three.
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    Four plus seven is eleven.
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    Carry the one.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    One plus three is four.
  • 4:03 - 4:07
    Four thousand one hundred thirty-four.
  • 4:07 - 4:12
Let's up the stakes a little bit.
  • 4:12 - 4:27
So let's say I had seven hundred ninety-six times fifty-eight.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    Let's mix it up well.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
All right, so first we're just going to multiply eight times seven hundred ninety-six.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
And notice, I've thrown in an extra digit up here.
  • 4:35 - 4:40
So eight times six is forty-eight.
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    Put the four up there.
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    Eight times nine is seventy-two.
  • 4:45 - 4:51
    Plus four is seventy-six.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
And then eight times seven is fifty-six.
  • 4:55 - 5:01
    Fifty-six plus seven is sixty-three.
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    I'm sure I'll make a careless mistake
  • 5:03 - 5:04
at some point in this video.
  • 5:04 - 5:08
And the goal for you is to identify if and when I do.
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    All right, now we're ready,
  • 5:09 - 5:10
so we can get rid of these guys up here.
  • 5:10 - 5:14
Now we can multiply this five, which is in the tens place.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    It's really a fifty.
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    Times this up here.
  • 5:17 - 5:20
Because it's a fifty we stick a zero down there.
  • 5:20 - 5:24
    Five times six is thirty.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
Put the zero there, put the three up there.
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    Five times nine is forty-five.
  • 5:30 - 5:34
    Plus the three is forty-eight.
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    Five times seven is thirty-five.
  • 5:37 - 5:41
    Plus four is thirty-nine.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    Now we're ready to add.
  • 5:43 - 5:46
    Eight plus zero is eight.
  • 5:46 - 5:48
    Six plus zero is six.
  • 5:48 - 5:53
    Three plus eight is eleven.
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    One plus six is seven.
  • 5:54 - 5:57
    Seven plus nine is sixteen.
  • 5:57 - 5:59
And then one plus three is four.
  • 5:59 - 6:05
So seven hundred ninety-six times fifty-eight is forty-six thousand one hundred sixty-eight.
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    And that sounds about right,
  • 6:07 - 6:10
because seven hundred ninety-six-- it's almost eight hundred.
  • 6:10 - 6:12
You know, which is almost one thousand.
  • 6:12 - 6:16
So if we multiplied one thousand times fifty-eight we'd get fifty-eight thousand.
  • 6:16 - 6:19
But we're multiplying something a little bit smaller
  • 6:19 - 6:20
    than one thousand times fifty-eight,
  • 6:20 - 6:22
so we're getting something a little bit smaller than fifty-eight thousand.
  • 6:22 - 6:27
So the number is in the correct ballpark.
  • 6:27 - 6:30
Now let's do one more here
  • 6:30 - 6:33
where I'm really going to step up the stakes.
  • 6:33 - 6:39
Let's do five hundred twenty-three times--
  • 6:39 - 6:42
I'm going to do a three-digit number now.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
    Times seven hundred ninety-eight.
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    That's a big three-digit number!
  • 6:48 - 6:51
But it's the same exact process.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
And once you kind of see the pattern
  • 6:52 - 6:56
you'll say, hey, this'll apply to any number of digits times any number of digits.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
It'll just start taking you a long time
  • 6:58 - 7:01
and your chances of making a careless mistake are going to go up,
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    but it's the same idea.
  • 7:03 - 7:06
So we start with eight times five hundred twenty-three.
  • 7:06 - 7:10
    Eight times three is twenty-four.
  • 7:10 - 7:13
    Stick the two up there.
  • 7:13 - 7:16
Now eight times two is sixteen.
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    Sixteen plus two is eighteen.
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    Put the one up there.
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    Eight times five is forty.
  • 7:22 - 7:25
    Plus one is forty-one.
  • 7:25 - 7:29
So eight times five hundred twenty-three is four thousand one hundred eighty-four.
  • 7:29 - 7:30
    We're not done.
  • 7:30 - 7:34
We have to multiply times the ninety and by the seven hundred.
  • 7:34 - 7:37
So let's do the ninety right there.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
So it's a ninety, so we'll stick a zero there.
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    It's not a nine.
  • 7:41 - 7:43
And let's get rid of these guys right there.
  • 7:43 - 7:50
    Nine times three is twenty-seven.
  • 7:50 - 7:54
    Nine times two is eighteen.
  • 7:54 - 7:59
    Eighteen plus two is twenty.
  • 7:59 - 8:04
And then we have nine times five is forty-five.
  • 8:04 - 8:10
    Forty-five plus two is forty-seven.
  • 8:10 - 8:12
I don't want to write it that thick.
  • 8:12 - 8:13
    Forty-seven.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
Let me make sure I did that one right,
  • 8:15 - 8:16
and let's just review it a little bit.
  • 8:16 - 8:20
    Nine times three was twenty-seven.
  • 8:20 - 8:22
We wrote the seven down here and put the two up there.
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    Nine times two is eighteen.
  • 8:24 - 8:27
We added two to that, so we wrote twenty.
  • 8:27 - 8:29
Wrote the zero down there and the two up there.
  • 8:29 - 8:32
The nine times five was forty-five.
  • 8:32 - 8:34
    Plus two is forty-seven.
  • 8:34 - 8:35
You really have to make sure
  • 8:35 - 8:37
that you don't make careless mistakes with these.
  • 8:37 - 8:39
Then finally, we have to multiply the seven,
  • 8:39 - 8:44
which is really a seven hundred times five hundred twenty-three.
  • 8:44 - 8:46
When it was just an eight we just started multiplying here.
  • 8:46 - 8:48
When it was a ninety, when we were dealing with the tens place,
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    we put a zero there.
  • 8:50 - 8:52
Now that we're dealing with something that's in the hundreds
  • 8:52 - 8:57
we're going to put two zeros there.
  • 8:57 - 9:01
And so you have seven-- and let's get rid of this stuff.
  • 9:01 - 9:05
    Seven times three is twenty-one.
  • 9:05 - 9:06
    Put the one there.
  • 9:06 - 9:08
    Stick the two up there.
  • 9:08 - 9:11
    Seven times two is fourteen.
  • 9:11 - 9:16
Fourteen plus our two is sixteen.
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    Put the one up there.
  • 9:18 - 9:20
    Seven times five is thirty-five.
  • 9:20 - 9:25
    Plus one is thirty-six.
  • 9:25 - 9:27
And now we're ready to add.
  • 9:27 - 9:29
And hopefully we didn't make any careless mistakes.
  • 9:29 - 9:31
So four plus zero plus zero.
  • 9:31 - 9:32
    That's easy.
  • 9:32 - 9:32
    That's four.
  • 9:32 - 9:34
    Eight plus seven plus zero.
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    That's fifteen.
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    Carry the one.
  • 9:37 - 9:40
One plus one plus one is three.
  • 9:40 - 9:42
    Four plus seven plus six.
  • 9:42 - 9:42
    That's what's?
  • 9:42 - 9:43
    Four plus six is ten.
  • 9:43 - 9:47
    It's seventeen.
  • 9:47 - 9:49
And then we have one plus four is five.
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    Five plus six is eleven.
  • 9:51 - 9:52
    Carry the one.
  • 9:52 - 9:54
    One plus three is four.
  • 9:54 - 9:58
So five hundred twenty-three times seven hundred ninety-eight
  • 9:58 - 10:04
is four hundred seventeen thousand three hundred fifty-four.
  • 10:04 - 10:06
Now we can even check to make sure.
  • 10:06 - 10:07
And so this is the moment of truth.
  • 10:07 - 10:09
Let's see if we have-- let's see,
  • 10:09 - 10:16
five hundred twenty-three times seven hundred ninety-eight.
  • 10:16 - 10:16
    There you go.
  • 10:16 - 10:17
    Moment of truth.
  • 10:17 - 10:19
    I don't have to re-record this video.
  • 10:19 - 10:22
It's four hundred seventeen thousand three hundred fifty-four.
  • 10:22 - 10:24
But we did it without the calculator,
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    which is the important point.
