Andrew Nguyen - Healthcare "big" Data from Data Management to Web Apps

My name is Andrew Nguyen, and this is my first

Clojure/West so hopefully this is somewhat in line

with what you guys are expecting to hear. And, I

think the schedule says XXXX systems for the

company. We recently went through a name change, and so what you see on the screen is

klaraHealth. And then, first, just thanks to Alex

and Lynn and everybody at [inaudible] for putting on a great event so far and "happy to be

here". Basically, I'm here to talk about kind of

how we're using Clojure and ClojureScript in

Health Care, Big Data, but I put 'big' really, in a

really small font because to us, big data in health

care is really a thousand little beta (RESEARCH)

problems. I haven't been able to find the source

of it, but I was told that the average patient

electronic medical record is only about one to

three megabytes, and so discounting images and

videos and whatnot, there's really not a lot of

data, it's just a variety of it.

And so, a little bit about myself: I recently finished a PhD in Medical Informatics at UC San

Francisco. And my thesis was on "Biometric and

Physiological Sensor Data Analytics", and mostly

wave form data in the intensive care

environment. And kind of through that process

and through that work, [I] became acutely aware

of the need to normalize and harmonize

healthcare data and whatever is coming on [an] electronic medical record.

Just quickly, in terms of the audience, how many

people here have a background in healthcare, or

have done healthcare? (assumed number of hands raised].

Ok. And then, in terms of the software side, I

spent a lot of time in embedded software in

defense aerospace, wireless semiconductors, and

then in terms of the healthcare and informatics side of it, did a lot of work in Hadoop and

semantic computing in general and web

application development.
