Hi, my name is Peter Avalro and I'm from
UC Berkeley and this is my first keynote

talk. So, thank you for coming and thank
you for honoring me by asking me.

The talk is called "Outwards from the
middle of the maze," although, if I'm

going to be totally honest, that was the
original title of the talk, when I thought

I was giving a straight-ahead research
talk - that's number four - about my

current, sort of nascent project. But when
I learned that the talk had been upgraded

to a keynote, I thought, "Ah, geez, I
should go for it, right? I've got the

bully pulpit, so I should do some of the
things that you see in keynotes, like, I

should deliver a little bit of a polemic
(that's number one). I'm an academic,

right, so I should deliver some kind of
lesson (that's number two). I should

present a survey of the state of the arts
