Louise Despont According to the Universe | ART21 "New York Close Up"

I've been collecting images, putting things into books since high school. Before it was more about coming across an image and putting them aside, then looking for specific samples. I've been thinking about where the ideas come from.

What the source of information and inspiration was about. I;m really drawn to images that are very full, because

I'm really drawn to images that are very full, and very packed; because I want to feel strong and present in the work.

Most of them come from the interenet, some are from space and some are from travels abroad.

Collecting them, and storing them is just about work that vibrates from you, that you say "woah that is so powerful, you are moved by it and changed by it."

10 years ago I would look at my images as thought they were breadcrumbs, which caught my eye, which are interesting and why.

This is an old portfolio of mine from 2009, in India, I visited Jaipur and New Dehli, it is lots of imagery similar to textiles and farming.

This idea came back into my work 6 years later. When I looked at the 6 sided work, the energy of the hexagon.

A body of work developed. one way the work seemed so slow, 1 year equals one show. It is the state of mind of my life. The process is a learning tool.

For my show, I think of vibrations, sound waves, specifically volcanic vibrations.

the Krakatoda specifically because of how far reaching it was. Every thing is vibrations.

Everything is made up of waves of energy. things in life have a hum; and there is a way to visually represent that. There are patterns to motion.

When I look at the drawings, and the most successful, it feels like they hum and vibrate in a way that the energy is translated in the correct way. It takes on its' own life.

What is so interesting about the creative act is that you can access something comepletely outside of you; and it then becomes a reference of your work. There eventually is some unifying force.

If you offer yourself up as the hands for the work, it sometimes has it's own language.

For some reason I had an image of the eyeball, if you think of the pupil as the ego, and the iris as the

As energy outside of yourself. You start to build a relationship of this awareness. The work is not coming from your ego, it is coming from some universal energy; and that relationship is so sacred. Findind what those really interesting relationships are are like memories.

So if I have a bad memory, and I use these images, it isnt about the memory any more; it loses it context.
