Jennifer Murray's year as a English Language Assistant: digital storytelling

  • 0:13 - 0:28
Welcome to Jennifer Murray's time abroad in Murcia, South-East Spain from October 2011 to May/June 2012.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
During the eight months of my work placement abroad,
  • 0:30 - 0:30
I taught young Primary school children English.
  • 0:30 - 0:40
However, I want to show you the many good times
  • 0:40 - 0:43
that I had with the other English Language Assistants
  • 0:43 - 0:45
and the friends that I made whilst I was there.
  • 0:45 - 0:56
On the 22nd of October 2011, there was a huge party for all English Language Assistants and "Erasmus" students.
  • 0:56 - 1:02
This party was held in a place called "Villa Erasmus" or The "Erasmus Villa"
  • 1:02 - 1:07
The villa is huge, with lots of bedrooms, balconies,
  • 1:07 - 1:14
huge garden, an outdoor swimming pool and a place for doing BBQ’s
  • 1:14 - 1:21
Lots of students used to stay here and some parties took place here as well.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
On the same day as the party for English Language Assistants,
  • 1:25 - 1:34
I went out with the woman from my host family to her home town.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
Whilst I was there, I got the opportunity to stroke two horses
  • 1:37 - 1:40
whilst I was sitting on the wall near the beach.
  • 1:40 - 1:47
On Sunday the 22nd of January 2012,
  • 1:47 - 1:51
I took part in a 30KM bike ride through the countryside of Murcia.
  • 1:51 - 1:58
There were many families and lots and lots of people who participated in this bike ride.
  • 1:58 - 2:05
I went along with the woman from my host family and some of her friends.
  • 2:05 - 2:10
I had the opportunity to try out various bikes,
  • 2:10 - 2:14
including a very tall massive bike which was taller than me.
  • 2:14 - 2:22
The bike had a saddle and handle bars which were extremely high up!
  • 2:22 - 2:31
Near the beginning of March 2012, Julie, Arisha and myself went to a beach in Cartagena.
  • 2:31 - 2:36
This photo is of Julie (from Northern Ireland), Arisha (from America) and me
  • 2:36 - 2:41
standing on the sand with the sea behind us.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
You can also see waves coming in.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
I decided to have my birthday in Spain.
  • 2:48 - 2:54
So on Wednesday the 14th of March 2012, eight of us,
  • 2:54 - 3:12
which were Me, Vanessa (who was my support worker), Jennifer (from London), Amanda (from Canada), Grace and Laura (two girls from England), Will (from America) and Katie (from Liverpool)
  • 3:12 - 3:19
went to "Madre de Dios" which is a restaurant where we had dinner.
  • 3:19 - 3:25
All of us are sitting round the table, waiting for our dinner.
  • 3:25 - 3:31
You can see wine glasses, napkins, plates and cutlery on the table.
  • 3:31 - 3:40
After having dinner, you can see me, with a chocolate cake with a candle in the middle of the cake.
  • 3:40 - 3:46
"Pequeña Miss Cupcakes" was a place that I visited on a regular basis with my friends,
  • 3:46 - 3:49
or with Vanessa (my support worker)
  • 3:49 - 4:00
Therefore, on the 1st of April 2012, I went to this place and enjoyed a cup-cake and a can of coke.
  • 4:00 - 4:13
From the 31st of March until the 6/7/8th of April, in Spain, they celebrate something called "Holy week" or Semana Santa".
  • 4:13 - 4:27
This is represented by people dressing up in tunics and there's often lots of processions through the streets/squares of the towns in Spain.
  • 4:27 - 4:32
The people usually carry wooden floats with candles,
  • 4:32 - 4:37
crosses and flowers on the top of them.
  • 4:37 - 4:48
Not only that, they are either followed by a band or a band playing drums/trumpets are in front of them.
  • 4:48 - 4:57
The people dressed up in tunics, walk together, carrying the heavy float and give out sweets to the young children.
  • 4:57 - 5:06
On the 4th of April 2012, I spent the whole day with Vanessa, her sister Veronica and their friends.
  • 5:06 - 5:28
We went to a cafe where they do beautiful exquisite chocolate milkshakes (and if you are lucky, you can get cream on the top!)
  • 5:28 - 5:35
We're all sitting on the comfy sofas inside the cafe. Following the cafe on the same day, Vanessa and I are standing near a fence outside a park.
  • 5:35 - 5:51
On Saturday the 26th of May 2012 which was my last full weekend in Murcia,
  • 5:51 - 5:59
an English Language Assistant from America invited a massive group of other English Language Assistants, "Erasmus" students
  • 5:59 - 6:01
and anyone else who wanted to come to her flat for a huge farewell party (combined with a birthday party).
  • 6:01 - 6:10
The party took place outside on a huge balcony, with lots of people drinking, eating, chatting, dancing and generally having a fantastic time.
  • 6:10 - 6:17
In the first photo, I am sitting next to Natcho and Jack and we're all having drinks.
  • 6:17 - 6:23
In the second photo, you can see a huge group of people from all parts of the world.
  • 6:23 - 6:31
Everyone spoke either in their own language, in English, Spanish, German and Italian.
  • 6:31 - 6:37
Towards the end of May, a group of us went to the Cartagena beach
  • 6:37 - 6:45
and there is a photo of us all sitting on towels with the restaurant (right next to the beach) behind us.
  • 6:45 - 6:53
This is possibly during my last weekend in Murcia and it was the last time,
  • 6:53 -
that we practically all saw each other before we departed for going back home.
