    OK, you know that time
    when you're lying in your bed,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    it's early morning,
    it's still dark outside.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    In fact you shouldn't even be awake.
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    But guess what? You are.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    You probably have a job interview
    or a big exam, and it's making you nervous
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    and your heart's racing
    just that little bit faster,
  • 0:53 - 0:57
    and you know that any minute now
    that alarm clock to going off violently
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    next to your bed, right?
  • 1:00 - 1:05
    And guess what; reality sets in,
    and you can't escape the day.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    Many years ago
    in the beginning of my career
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    I found myself lying in my bed
    comfortable, warm, and safe
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    but knowing that I had
    a big day ahead of me.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    I had my first marketing strategy review.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    And what made it worse?
  • 1:22 - 1:27
    I was presenting to an international team
    of very senior executives.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    And guess what?
  • 1:30 - 1:35
    They're smart, they're hard
    to please, and fast to decide.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    So as I'm getting ready,
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    I realize, not only do I have to tell
    this compelling story today,
  • 1:42 - 1:46
    but I have to look the part, professional.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    So I grab one of, what I call,
    my power suit,
  • 1:51 - 1:56
    and no, it doesn't have a cape,
    or spurt out pixie dust,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    it just looks good.
  • 1:59 - 2:04
    So, I'm in my power suit,
    and I get in the driver's seat of my car,
  • 2:04 - 2:09
    and I drive to the office
    silently rehearsing my opening comments.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
    Now here's the deal; I decide to get
    to that conference room 30 minutes early.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    Do you want to know why?
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    Not because I just want
    to be on time and prompt,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    it's a little bit smarter than that;
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    I want to gauge the room.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    I want to observe the body language,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    and I want to get a sense
    of the mood in the room,
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    so if necessary I can adjust my delivery
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    because I'm not the only one
    that's been presenting that day.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    The agenda moves on, it's my turn.
  • 2:44 - 2:49
    I walk into this room holding my head
    up high, up to the presenters table.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    Even though my nerves are killing me,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    the palms of my hands are even
    getting a little bit clammy,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    but you don't show anyone, right?
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    You just keep it together,
    those shoulders are straight,
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    and I walk in, and I present everyone
    with this warm welcoming smile.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    I'm still keeping my shoulders back
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    because you want to have that power pose.
  • 3:09 - 3:14
    And I deliberately make eye contact
    with the executive panel in front of me
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    that I'm about to present to.
  • 3:17 - 3:22
    And I begin my opening comments,
    looking at them straight in the eye
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    with confidence
    because I'm going to own this.
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    Well guess what, it works.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    I capture their attention, and I keep it
  • 3:29 - 3:34
    while I tell them about this business
    problem and a very creative solution.
  • 3:34 - 3:40
    Basically all I'm doing is I am telling
    a story that is painting a picture
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    on the opportunity that I just created.
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    Well, guess what?
  • 3:45 - 3:50
    The next thing I know, I'm being promoted
    and moved to another continent.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    So I wanted to share
    that brief example with you
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    because that is how impactful
    and how powerful
  • 3:58 - 4:02
    making that first great impression can be.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    If I mess that up who knows.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    You don't get a second chance.
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    And under a few seconds,
    people will make observations
  • 4:13 - 4:17
    about other people, situations,
    or environments,
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    and turn those observations into opinions.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    And we do it so quickly.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    Then you add to it the pace
    at which technology is evolving.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    It's absolutely incredible.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    I just mention the words "social media,"
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    and I'm sure I'll get
    a smile from all of you.
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    Social media has given you
    a new platform to promote yourself
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    and represent yourself.
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    And you'll agree with me
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    that there's pretty much an app
    for anything out there, right?
  • 4:45 - 4:51
    Here's what you won't be able to order
    online or download via an app today:
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    your image,
  • 4:54 - 4:55
    your personal brand,
  • 4:56 - 5:00
    and your ability to correctly apply
    professional etiquette
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    in the work environment.
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    So guess what?
  • 5:04 - 5:09
    For the next few minutes I'm as close
    as you're going to get to that app.
  • 5:09 - 5:13
    So put your phones down,
    start to download now.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    And here's the reason:
    For the last 25 years
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    I've built relationships across the globe.
  • 5:18 - 5:23
    And to do that well, I had to really
    consciously develop my social smarts,
  • 5:23 - 5:27
    I had to develop the ability
    to create these great first impressions,
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    and most importantly,
    to build my personal brand.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    Today I run seminars,
    and I think I've got the best job
  • 5:35 - 5:39
    because I work with people and help
    them identify what their brand is,
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    by, not only by what they do
  • 5:42 - 5:44
    but why they do it,
    and why it matters to them.
  • 5:44 - 5:45
    When you need to show up
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    I'll help you bring the best version
    of you that you can.
  • 5:49 - 5:53
    You know this, building trust-based
    relationships today doesn't happen
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    by the click of a button.
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    It is a process that requires
    human interaction,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    authentic human interaction.
  • 6:03 - 6:04
    And you'll agree with me,
  • 6:04 - 6:10
    relationships both in your personal
    and professional life take a lot of work.
  • 6:11 - 6:17
    So here's the thing; the way you show up,
    the image you project,
  • 6:18 - 6:23
    the first impression you create
    will ultimately inform people
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    how you want to be treated.
  • 6:25 - 6:28
    Because they're going to look
    at the non-verbals:
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    What's your body language, your attire?
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    Do you have eye-contact,
    or the lack thereof?
  • 6:33 - 6:34
    Are you really listening?
  • 6:34 - 6:36
    The tone of your voice.
  • 6:37 - 6:40
    So you're probably sitting there
    in your seats going,
  • 6:40 - 6:44
    "That's not completely fair.
    So, people think about all of these?"
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    Well yeah, they do.
  • 6:46 - 6:49
    You know how the old adage goes, right?
    "Judging a book by its cover"?
  • 6:49 - 6:53
    Well, guess what; we all do it,
    it's human nature, and the reason being
  • 6:53 - 6:57
    is our brains, our imaginations,
    first of all, are so powerful.
  • 6:58 - 7:03
    Our brains are filled with data points
    that become these preferences
  • 7:03 - 7:07
    for how we perceive others
    in that first encounter.
  • 7:08 - 7:11
    Think about the minute
    you first fell in love.
  • 7:12 - 7:14
    That was your preference.
  • 7:14 - 7:17
    It's incredible, as humans we will take
  • 7:17 - 7:18
    an image,
  • 7:18 - 7:19
    an object,
  • 7:20 - 7:21
    a situation,
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    and we will start to fill in the blanks
  • 7:25 - 7:28
    based on what we see, what we don't see,
  • 7:29 - 7:32
    or guess what, what you want to see.
  • 7:33 - 7:35
    It's human nature; we all do it.
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    So okay, you get it right?
  • 7:37 - 7:38
    First impressions matter.
  • 7:38 - 7:42
    But so does your personal brand,
    and that matters even more.
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    So what do I mean by personal brand?
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    Well, I'm a brand.
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    You're a brand.
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    Collectively in this room we are a brand
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    whether you are consciously
    building it or not.
  • 7:56 - 8:01
    In this case, your personal brand -
    think about it - it's the intellectual,
  • 8:01 - 8:06
    visual, and emotional impression
    people have when they think of you.
  • 8:07 - 8:11
    That would be their summary
    of you in their mind,
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    in an unspoken instance.
  • 8:17 - 8:22
    Now, your personal brand can
    be so powerful and impactful;
  • 8:22 - 8:27
    it can sell you, differentiate you,
    and set you apart from others.
  • 8:30 - 8:31
    But you need to ask yourself:
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    is the personal brand
    that I have right now today
  • 8:34 - 8:37
    the most accurate
    and impactful one for me?
  • 8:38 - 8:43
    See, here's the thing; we can all -
    you can do it, I can do it -
  • 8:43 - 8:48
    we can all fake those first few seconds
    of that first impression, right?
  • 8:48 - 8:51
    We all know how to show up well
    when we want to.
  • 8:51 - 8:54
    We know how to do that,
    so you can fake that.
  • 8:54 - 8:59
    Don't ever fake your personal brand;
    that has to be authentic to be accurate.
  • 9:01 - 9:04
    It's got to be authentic to be accurate.
  • 9:04 - 9:07
    And in this case you want
    your personal brand
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    to be the result of a sustained effort
  • 9:09 - 9:12
    to be the very best version
    of you that you can be.
  • 9:14 - 9:18
    So, if you're at version 1.0,
    how do you get to 1.5 and 2.0 and 2.5
  • 9:18 - 9:21
    as you grow your career
    and your personal life?
  • 9:21 - 9:24
    All experiences that you will gain
    throughout your life
  • 9:24 - 9:27
    is only going to add to your brand.
  • 9:27 - 9:29
    So where do you start?
  • 9:29 - 9:33
    Well, I'm sure you've all
    researched a project this week,
  • 9:33 - 9:37
    maybe some of you have
    researched a recipe or a book.
  • 9:38 - 9:42
    But how about you start
    doing research on yourself?
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    I'm going to share with you
    a couple of questions
  • 9:45 - 9:48
    that you can actually ask yourself
    and start writing these answers down
  • 9:48 - 9:50
    because they will be very leading
  • 9:50 - 9:53
    into helping you identify
    your personal brand.
  • 9:53 - 9:56
    And it's only a subset
    of what we can really dive into,
  • 9:56 - 9:59
    but I think you'll get my point.
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    So start with you first.
  • 10:01 - 10:04
    And it's easy to say,
    "What are you passionate about?"
  • 10:04 - 10:06
    "I love red cars," well, no.
    That's not it.
  • 10:06 - 10:11
    What are you really passionate about?
    What do you love doing the most?
  • 10:11 - 10:14
    Think about that, because sometimes
    it's not that easy to answer
  • 10:14 - 10:18
    when you really think about what you
    want to be passionate about in life.
  • 10:18 - 10:23
    And then start thinking about
    what are your strongest attributes.
  • 10:24 - 10:25
    What sets you apart?
  • 10:26 - 10:27
    What do you rock at?
  • 10:28 - 10:33
    If I were to ask you to summarize you
    in a little two minute story for me,
  • 10:33 - 10:34
    what would you say?
  • 10:37 - 10:39
    Think about that.
  • 10:40 - 10:44
    Now I want you to take a step
    outside of yourself for a second,
  • 10:44 - 10:46
    and think about
    how others will perceive you.
  • 10:48 - 10:52
    Do they think you're as good
    as what you think you're good at?
  • 10:52 - 10:54
    Do they know what your passions are?
  • 10:55 - 10:59
    How would they describe you
    when you're not in the room?
  • 11:00 - 11:04
    How would somebody summarize you
    if they are referring you
  • 11:04 - 11:06
    for a job or an opportunity?
  • 11:07 - 11:09
    What would they say about you?
  • 11:09 - 11:11
    Think about that: Have you ever
    thought about that?
  • 11:11 - 11:13
    So here's what I will implore you to do:
  • 11:13 - 11:15
    Go and seek the feedback
  • 11:15 - 11:19
    from family, friends, work colleagues,
    people around you that know you,
  • 11:19 - 11:22
    and ask them to tell you
    how they would describe you.
  • 11:22 - 11:27
    That should give you a good summation
    of what your current brand is.
  • 11:28 - 11:32
    So you think about those questions,
    you write those answers down,
  • 11:32 - 11:35
    and you start describing yourself
    as an own brand.
  • 11:35 - 11:38
    You have to start doing this,
    you have to start living it.
  • 11:38 - 11:42
    And I mean really living it
    because the more you practice,
  • 11:42 - 11:45
    the better your ability is going
    to get to tell your story.
  • 11:46 - 11:49
    You got to be able to tell your story.
  • 11:50 - 11:55
    But here's a word of caution:
    I mentioned social media earlier?
  • 11:56 - 12:00
    Please be consistent
    across all your social media profiles
  • 12:00 - 12:03
    in how you articulate you and your brand.
  • 12:03 - 12:06
    Do not work on a professional brand
  • 12:06 - 12:10
    and have your social media accounts
    demonstrate something different.
  • 12:10 - 12:13
    I think you know what I mean. Right?
  • 12:13 - 12:18
    I say you are what you post.
  • 12:20 - 12:21
    Be careful.
  • 12:21 - 12:22
    Be smart.
  • 12:22 - 12:23
    Think.
  • 12:23 - 12:26
    And if you have any doubts,
    don't hit that button.
  • 12:26 - 12:27
    Don't post it.
  • 12:27 - 12:32
    Think about it, but make sure,
    please, across all these platforms -
  • 12:32 - 12:34
    and we have so many
    social media platforms -
  • 12:34 - 12:36
    that you have a consistent profile.
  • 12:36 - 12:41
    Your profile should very briefly describe
    you and peak people's interest.
  • 12:43 - 12:44
    And then the hard work starts
  • 12:44 - 12:47
    because now you have to start
    nurturing networks around you
  • 12:47 - 12:50
    that are going to be
    influential in your life.
  • 12:50 - 12:52
    And people are going to refer to you,
  • 12:52 - 12:55
    because your brand is going
    to become your trademark,
  • 12:56 - 13:00
    and people will refer to you
    based on what your brand entails.
  • 13:00 - 13:04
    So take some time and assess
    where you are with your current brand
  • 13:04 - 13:07
    and start thinking of ways
    that you can make it better.
  • 13:09 - 13:10
    So now it's your turn.
  • 13:10 - 13:15
    If ever you find yourself in a situation
    like I did, and I'm positive you will.
  • 13:15 - 13:21
    Make sure to take that deep breathe,
    observe the environment around you first.
  • 13:22 - 13:25
    Raise that conscious
    awareness of yourself:
  • 13:25 - 13:27
    social and situational smarts.
  • 13:27 - 13:32
    And when you need to show up,
    make a great impression.
  • 13:33 - 13:37
    Be able to articulate your brand
    based on experiences.
  • 13:38 - 13:43
    And here's the thing;
    life is just a series of moments.
  • 13:44 - 13:46
    Here's what I ask of you.
  • 13:46 - 13:51
    Show up well, build a brand
    that is authentically you.
  • 13:52 - 13:57
    If you do that, you can make
    every moment count.
